According to the Telegraph, Leicester have told Jannik Vestergaard he can leave, just months after Tottenham and West Ham tried to sign him.

What’s the story?

Well, the 29-year-old only joined Leicester in August, after Brendan Rodgers signed him from Southampton in a £15m deal.

UEFA MUST STOP! NEW CHAMPIONS LEAGUE COULD RUIN FOOTBALL

However, after a miserable debut campaign at the King Power Stadium, the Foxes have now decided to sell the Denmark international.

Tottenham, West Ham and Wolves were all interested in signing Vestergaard last year, so they will surely be pleased to hear this news.

Spurs even held talks with the towering defender.

With all due respect, it seems as if the Premier League trio dodged a bullet.

Vestergaard made just six starts in the Premier League this season as Leicester finished eighth, and he wasn’t even named in the matchday squad on numerous occasions.

For £15m, and on a salary believed to be worth £75,000-a-week, this has to go down as a costly mistake for Leicester, to say the least.

Tottenham & West Ham must learn from this

In our view, Tottenham and West Ham must learn from Leicester’s mistake.

Whatever caused Spurs and the Hammers to become attracted by Vestergaard should be reassessed, as the data behind him becoming a target was clearly flawed.

Even during his time at Southampton, the Dane was hardly a standout defender in England, so it does baffle us that two leading Premier League sides wanted him.

It will be interesting to see where Vestergaard ends up now, following two unsuccessful stints in the Premier League.

Hopefully, Tottenham and West Ham decide against reigniting their interest, although that doesn’t mean both sides aren’t in need of a new centre-back or two.

Antonio Conte needs another standout defender to play with Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, as well as another quality option for depth.

In West Ham’s case, David Moyes cannot assume that Angelo Ogbonna will be the same player after he recovers from his serious injury, so at least one centre-back is needed.

Whatever happens, we doubt Vestergaard will still be on Tottenham and West Ham’s radar after his struggles this season.
