According to the Express and Star, Ruben Neves now wants a release clause in his contract at Wolves, following interest from Arsenal.
Well, it was said that Mikel Arteta wanted the £58,000-a-week playmaker at the Emirates Stadium.
The Express and Star believe Neves was heading for the exit door at Molineux this summer, as a deal with Barcelona had been agreed in principle.
However, problems regarding the expected departure of Frenkie de Jong have slowed things down, and the Portugal international is now said to be open to a new contract at Wolves – on one condition.
The 25-year-old is keen for Wolves to insert a release clause into any new deal, to assure him of a clean departure where he wouldn’t need to force anything with a transfer request.
Manchester United are also said to have made an offer for Neves.
Interest in the Wolves No.8 comes after he scored four goals in 36 appearances last season, while also providing two assists.
With the Portuguese playmaker clearly considering his next move, Arsenal have a great chance of signing him – either now or next summer.
Neves is evidently thinking of leaving Wolves relatively soon, given the fact he wants a release clause, so if the Gunners make Wolves a respectable offer, things could start to happen.
The £15.8m man has a contract at Molineux running until June 2024, so if Arsenal enjoy a strong season and return to the Champions League, next summer could be the ideal time to sign Neves if he doesn’t pen a new deal.
At that point, he will have just 12 months remaining on his contract, and Wolves could surely be tempted to sell.
