Middlesbrough have signed Wolves left-winger Ryan Giles on a season-long loan, the club have confirmed. Middlesbrough announced Giles as their second signing in as many days, having secured the capture of Northampton Town goalkeeper Liam Roberts yesterday afternoon on a free transfer. Giles has impressed in his Championship loan spells away from Molineux already, having played for Coventry City, Rotherham United, Cardiff City, and Blackburn Rovers in the second tier in recent seasons. He also played with Coventry City in League One, Shrewsbury Town in the same division, and Telford United in the National League. The 22-year-old has played once for Wolves’ first team, although this came in the FA Cup Fourth Round back in 2019. In 31 appearances last season for Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers he registered an impressive 10 assists, more than any Middlesbrough player managed. Many clubs were interested in bringing Giles in on a season-long loan this summer, but Boro have edged out any competition to snap him up for the upcoming campaign. Where will Giles fit into Middlesbrough’s team? Manager Chris Wilder likes to play a 3-5-2 formation and so Giles would operate as a left wing-back. Marc Bola was the first choice in that position last term, but Wilder does not seem convinced in having Bola as a regular starter as he often rotated with Neil Taylor. With Taylor now set to leave Middlesbrough at the end of this month when his contract expires, it was clear that a left wing-back to provide competition for Bola would be a priority, and so Giles may have edged out the Boro man to become a starter immediately.
