Premier League giants Arsenal are set to sign Marquinhos with Sao Paulo coach Rogerio Ceni ‘very angry’ about a deal that will see the teenager leave the Brazilian giants for just £2.5 million, according to Bolavip.

As far as Ceni is concerned, this is indicative of a wider problem.

After losing Helenio to Red Bull Bragantino for £3.6 million and Gustavo Maia to Barcelona for £4.5 million, Marquinhos is merely the latest in a string of exciting young talents exiting the Morumbi for the sort of fee most Premier League clubs could fish out from down the back of the sofa.

Arsenal have agreed a £2.5 million deal for the 19-year-old left-winger. A fee that barely scratches the surface of Mikel Arteta’s summer budget.

No wonder Ceni, a former Brazil international and football’s most prolific goalkeeper, is not exactly beaming from ear to ear.

‘Sao Paulo is a team (that must) sell players above 10 million euros,” Ceni points out, via Esportes R7, with some justification.

According to Bolavip, the head coach is ‘very angry’ about Marquinhos’ impending move to the English capital. The fresh-faced wideman has already travelled to London ahead of a medical with Arsenal and, while £2.5 million is hardly a substantial sum, it’s better than nothing.

Due to a rather complicated contract situation, there was a very real chance that Marquinhos could have left the Morumbi on a free transfer. Imagine the look on Ceni’s face if he’d been told that one of his prized assets was heading for exit without Sao Paulo earning anything in return.

This doesn’t exactly paint a picture of a club with their ducks in a row.

“The big problem was the contract length, which was for five years and valid only in Brazil, unfortunately,” admits Ramalho Muricy, Sao Paulo’s sports co-ordinator. “They didn’t realise it at the time when they signed the contract.

“We even managed to reverse the Marquinhos case. (Marquinhos) was supposed to be (available for) free. That’s the truth. We still got 3 million euros from Arsenal.

“If he went to FIFA (and appealed), we wouldn’t be entitled to anything.”

According to The Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers held talks to sign Marquinhos before Arsenal moved into pole position.
