Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 26 games):
9 points up on last season (40 pts vs 31 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (88; CL qualification)
Liverpool (77; CL)
Chelsea (72; CL)
Arsenal (68; CL)
Tottenham (65; EL)
Manchester Utd (61; ECL, potentially EL)
Southampton
West Ham
Leicester
Wolves (10th on 54 pts)
Aston Villa
Everton
Brighton
Crystal Palace
Leeds
Newcastle
Brentford (33)
Burnley (33)
Watford
Norwich

Comments:
Due to the League Cup Final, three of the top 4 couldn't play their PL games so there is little change in the table at the top. Man Utd's draw at home to Watford dropped the points needed for 6th down to 61.

Southampton remain the most improved side in comparative terms (17 points better off), with Brentford being the only other team in double figures.

Wolves were unable to improve on last season's defeat at West Ham (0-4) and so remain 9 points better off than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.333 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 7th.

Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 27 games):
6 points up on last season (40 pts vs 34 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (91; CL qualification)
Liverpool (77; CL)
Chelsea (72; CL)
Arsenal (68; CL)
Tottenham (68; EL)
West Ham (59; ECL, potentially EL)
Manchester Utd
Leicester
Southampton
Aston Villa
Wolves (11th on 51 pts)
Everton
Crystal Palace
Brighton
Newcastle
Leeds
Brentford (36)
Burnley (33)
Watford
Norwich

Comments:
Southampton remain the most improved side in comparative terms despite losing (now 14 pts better off), while Brentford remain in second, 13 pts ahead of their comparative tally. None of the other teams have managed a double-digit improvement.

Leeds remain the worst team in comparative terms (now 22 pts down), ahead of Manchester United (-16) and Everton (-10).

Wolves failed to repeat last season's victory over Crystal Palace (last season: 2-0) and so are down to being 6 points better off than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.214 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 9th.

Southampton

Crystal Palace

Brentford (36)
Burnley (33)

Comments:
Only 4 rearranged games have been played since the last update.

As a result of losing Southampton lost their position as the best team in comparative terms (now 11 pts better off). Brentford are now in first place (13 pts ahead of their comparative tally).

Leeds remain the worst team in comparative terms (22 pts down), ahead of Manchester United (-16) and Everton (-10).

Wolves managed to improve on the defeat in the comparative fixture last season (2-3 loss to West Brom) and so jump back up to being 9 points better off. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.321 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 8th.

Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 29 games):
12 points up on last season (46 pts vs 34 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (89; CL qualification)
Liverpool (79; CL)
Chelsea (72; CL)
Arsenal (71; CL)
Tottenham (65; EL)
Manchester Utd (61; ECL, potentially EL)
West Ham
Wolves (8th on 57 pts)
Leicester
Aston Villa
Southampton
Everton
Crystal Palace
Newcastle
Leeds
Brentford
Brighton (35)
Burnley (33)
Watford
Norwich

Comments:
Brentford remain the most improved side compared to their comparative tally (13 pts up), with Wolves now in second place, ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool (both 10 points up).

Despite their win, Leeds remain the worst team in comparative terms (22 pts down), ahead of Manchester United and Everton (both -13).

Wolves managed to improve on their defeat at Goodison Park last season (0-1) and so return to the previous season best mark of being 12 points better off. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.413 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 6th.

Incidentally, Wolves have become the first of the 17 teams in the division last season to manage to best last season's points tally already. We are therefore guaranteed to finish on a positive figure in the comparative table.

Fascinating figures, appreciate all the effort. I was just wondering, how on earth are Everton not closer to the bottom?

They accumulated a very healthy 59 points last season, so they would need to underperform by over 25 points to be in the relegation zone. At present, they have 13 points fewer than last season, so they still have a fair amount of leeway when looking at the comparative table.

When it comes to analysing the trends of teams' comparative results to date, then Everton would be 15th (Burnley, Leeds and Norwich to be relegated).

Sometimes, it is fun to be sad.

Congratulations on work that many find interesting.

Arsenal join Brentford as the most improved side compared to their comparative tallies (both 13 pts up), with Liverpool the only other club to record a double-digit improvement (10 points up).

Despite their win, Leeds remain the worst team in comparative terms (19 pts down), ahead of Manchester United (-13).

Wolves failed to match last season's victory over Leeds (1-0) and so drop back down to a figure of +9. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.3 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 7th.

UPDATE:
As so many teams have played over the last week and a half, here's an update to the standings. The situation for European qualification has also become clear with 7th definitely earning a European spot.

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (89; CL qualification)
Liverpool (83; CL)
Chelsea (71; CL)
Tottenham (69; CL)
Arsenal (65; EL)
Manchester Utd (60; EL)
West Ham (56; ECL)
Wolves (joint 7th on 56 pts)
Southampton
Leicester
Aston Villa
Newcastle
Crystal Palace
Brentford
Everton
Brighton
Leeds (38)
Burnley (36)
Watford
Norwich

Comments:
Brentford remain the most improved side compared to their comparative tally, and improved their tally further (now 22 pts up), ahead of Liverpool (14 points up).

Despite their win, Leeds remain easily the worst team in comparative terms (21 pts down), ahead of Leicester (-16) and Manchester United (-14).

Owing to the postponement of the Manchester City fixture, there has obviously been any change to Wolves' performance. We therefore remain averaging an extra 0.344 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 6th.

Well I don’t have much faith in the comparative table telling us much.yes we are doing better than last season and after 24 games and 40 points we looked good for 60 + points and a record finish . Now I would be surprised if we got more than 52 points …and holding off Leicester to retain 8th would be good. To get more than 52 would be great.

But 7 7 13 8 is a dangerous sequence and guarantees nothing as Everton and burnley know only too well.

They say every team outside of the Big 6 and Everton could realistically get relegated any season in this league. Everton teased us, but they're going to prove the saying right and it will be decades before they have as bad as season as this again.

So you have effectively 3 from 14 teams going down each season. It's a real churn and I believe an incredible success story what our club have achieved to manage those 5 seasons. So many teams get into this league and drop within 2 or 3 seasons, its just the norm. Let alone finishing as high as 7th and (hopefully) 8th. One of these days, when I get time, I really want to look into the performance of promoted teams as I believe that run of ours must be one of the best , possibly *the* best, than any genuinely new-to-the-league team has managed for decades, this league is so controlled by those Big 6. Sure, the likes of Newcastle , even Villa, have dropped down for a year or two, then done well on return, but they are teams who have spent nearly all the past 30 years in the top division, unlike us.

The best thing is, even if we were to get relegated, we are far stronger as a club than 10+ years ago and our chances of a quick return would be so much higher. It wouldn't be like the 90's again.

I think most seasons we will see at least 2 of the 3 teams promoted get relegated. The gap is getting bigger between the championship and premier league

Comments:
The last update during the season as obviously the update after 38 games will simply be the same as the real final table as all distortion of the fixture list ends once all matches have been completed.

Wolves failed to match last season's equivalent win vs Norwich (1-0 v Fulham) and so fall back to being just 6 points better off than last season.

With one matchday to go, half the league has recorded improvements on their points totals of the previous campaign (Wolves obviously being one of them), while eight are guaranteed to finish with a negative comparative tally.

I've run a similar thread in the last two seasons (see 2019/20 and 2020/21), and have decided to track this season's results in this fashion once again.

While the league table is taking shape at 8 games in, the impact of the "luck" of the fixture computer is still too significant to use the real league table as the sole basis for a team's performance to date.

To combat this, this thread looks at how teams are performing in comparison to their results in the exact same fixtures last season. It also provides a rough guide to the points tallies that may be required to achieve different positions in the final table.

Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 8 games):
2 points up on last season (12 pts vs 10 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (77 pts needed for title)
Liverpool
Chelsea
Tottenham (69 pts needed to guarantee CL)
Manchester Utd
West Ham
Everton
Leicester
Arsenal
Leeds
Brighton
Aston Villa
Southampton
Wolves (14th on 47 pts, i.e. the 45 point tally of last season minus the 2 points we are up to date)
Crystal Palace
Newcastle
Burnley (33 pts needed for safety)
Brentford
Watford
Norwich
(Note: the 3 promoted clubs' performance has been compared with the equivalent fixtures of the 3 relegated clubs; for this purpose, I compared like-for-like i.e. the "strongest" relegated side (Fulham; 18th place) are used for the "strongest promoted side (Norwich, 1st place) and so on).

Comments:
Brighton are the most improved side to date and have gained 10 more points from their 8 games compared to last season. Brentford are the next best performer in comparative terms (9 pts up on their comparative tally).

At the other end of the scale, Leeds are performing worst in the comparative stakes of the teams which were in the division last season (7 points worse off). Norwich are already 8 points down on the points return of the eventually relegated Fulham,

Wolves have managed to improve their comparative points tally by 2 points, thereby averaging an extra 0.25 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 10th.
Thanks very much for doing this. It makes really interesting reading. I can't say I understand what you have done, you lost me after "while the league table is taking shape" but now we are nearly at the end of the season, the fact that you predicted we would finish 10th is amazing...cuz it looks very likely that we will.

Now, who do you think will win the grand national?

Comments:
Wolves ended the season 6 points up on last season's points tally as one of ten clubs in the positive numbers.

Liverpool's enormous points improvement was almost enough to win the title, while all of the top 5 recorded improved results. Manchester United were the side in the top half of the division that regressed most severely. Leeds' regression almost cost them their place in the league and would have if Burnley had managed to avoid slipping into the negative numbers.

Brentford were the only promoted club to improve on the points tally of their comparative relegated club, and did so comfortably to finish mid-table.

After emerging from having a negative comparative tally (by beating Newcastle in Game 7), Wolves managed to remain in the positive numbers (except for the figure of 0 after drawing at Leeds in Game 9) for the remainder of the campaign.

The high point for the season was a figure of +12 pts that was first reached following Game 24 (2-1 vs Leicester) and lastly after Game 31 (2-1 vs Villa).

Had the team simply repeated its results of the previous season under Nuno for the remaining 7 fixtures from that point onwards we would have finished 7th and qualified for the Conference League. A further improvement to +14 pts over the previous season would ultimately have been required to reach the Europa League.

An enormous 22 point improvement would have been required for the Champions League, which was never on the cards as even analysing the trend of improvement/regression shown to date by the other clubs after each matchday only ever led to a season-best prediction of 6th for Wolves (lastly as after Game 31).
