I've run a similar thread in the last two seasons (see 2019/20 and 2020/21), and have decided to track this season's results in this fashion once again.

While the league table is taking shape at 8 games in, the impact of the "luck" of the fixture computer is still too significant to use the real league table as the sole basis for a team's performance to date.

To combat this, this thread looks at how teams are performing in comparison to their results in the exact same fixtures last season. It also provides a rough guide to the points tallies that may be required to achieve different positions in the final table.

Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 8 games):
2 points up on last season (12 pts vs 10 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (77 pts needed for title)
Liverpool
Chelsea
Tottenham (69 pts needed to guarantee CL)
Manchester Utd
West Ham
Everton
Leicester
Arsenal
Leeds
Brighton
Aston Villa
Southampton
Wolves (14th on 47 pts, i.e. the 45 point tally of last season minus the 2 points we are up to date)
Crystal Palace
Newcastle
Burnley (33 pts needed for safety)
Brentford
Watford
Norwich
(Note: the 3 promoted clubs' performance has been compared with the equivalent fixtures of the 3 relegated clubs; for this purpose, I compared like-for-like i.e. the "strongest" relegated side (Fulham; 18th place) are used for the "strongest promoted side (Norwich, 1st place) and so on).

Comments:
Brighton are the most improved side to date and have gained 10 more points from their 8 games compared to last season. Brentford are the next best performer in comparative terms (9 pts up on their comparative tally).

At the other end of the scale, Leeds are performing worst in the comparative stakes of the teams which were in the division last season (7 points worse off). Norwich are already 8 points down on the points return of the eventually relegated Fulham,

Wolves have managed to improve their comparative points tally by 2 points, thereby averaging an extra 0.25 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 10th.

Thanks for this. Was wondering how we doing comparitively. It's been a bit crazy so far, from the sublime to the ridiculous often in the same half! However, I do think this comparison shows what many (maybe most) are feeling - that overall we are playing a bit better than last season. Could probably be explained by the return of Raul, more than any other single factor.

I believe Raul played the first 10 games, so was probably more match fit than at present.

We did for the first 10 games, not all of the 10 comparative games though.

Out of the 10 teams we’ve played so far I think he played the corresponding fixture last year against Newcastle at home and Leicester away. He played for us against Southampton at home but not the away game.

So actually for 8 of the 10 we were missing him so he could have had a decent effect to be fair (not to suggest he’s the only factor though).

Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 9 games):
No change from last season (13 pts vs 13 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (77 pts needed for title)
Liverpool
Chelsea
Tottenham (69 pts needed to guarantee CL)
Manchester Utd
West Ham
Leicester
Everton
Arsenal
Leeds
Brighton
Aston Villa
Southampton
Wolves (joint 14th on 45 pts)
Crystal Palace
Newcastle
Burnley (34 pts needed for safety)
Watford
Brentford
Norwich

Comments:
Despite their loss, Brentford are now the best performing side in comparative terms (9 pts up on their comparative tally), ahead of Brighton, Liverpool and Watford (7 points up).

The worst performing teams in comparative terms are Aston Villa, Newcastle and Norwich (all 8 points worse off than last season).

Wolves narrowly failed to repeat last season's 1-0 win at Leeds and so lost 2 comparative points. We now have exactly the same points return as we did last season from the comparative fixtures. Obviously this trend applied across the remaining fixtures would mean Wolves ending on 45 points once again, which would mean – when factoring in the results trend of the other teams – a finish of 15th.

Makes me feel a lot better about this season! Let's hope it carries on like that and they become the bottom 3.

Wolves' comparative performance to date (after 10 games):
3 points up on last season (16 pts vs 13 pts from the same fixtures last season)

Comparative results table:
Manchester City (78 pts needed for title)
Liverpool
Chelsea
Manchester Utd (69 pts needed to guarantee CL)
Tottenham
West Ham
Leicester
Arsenal
Everton
Leeds
Southampton
Wolves (joint 12th on 48 pts)
Crystal Palace
Aston Villa
Brighton
Newcastle
Burnley (33 pts needed for safety)
Brentford
Watford
Norwich

Comments:
Despite another defeat, Brentford remain the best performing side in comparative terms (9 pts up on their comparative tally), just ahead of Liverpool (8 points up).

The worst performing teams in comparative terms remain Aston Villa, Newcastle and Norwich (all still 8 points worse off than last season). After 10 games, West Ham are the only side going along at exactly the same pace as last season.

Wolves managed to record a win in a match they lost last season (1-2) and so gained 3 comparative points to return us to a positive figure of 3, thereby averaging an extra 0.3 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 11th.

Southampton are now the most improved side in comparative terms (9 pts up on their comparative tally), just ahead of Brentford (8 points up).

Aston Villa is now the outright worst performing team in comparative terms (11 points worse off than last season), leading to Dean Smith's departure. The next worst performing teams are Manchester United and Newcastle (both 7 points down)

Wolves failed to record any improvement on last season's defeat at Crystal Palace (0-1) and so remain 3 points up on last season, thereby averaging an extra 0.27 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 10th.

If the trend continues I’d be more than happy with 10th, however a lot can happen between now and the end of the season.

Hopefully with Neto and Otto coming back into contention plus possibly one or two new Bruno signings in January maybe we can finish slightly higher?

Manchester Utd
West Ham
Arsenal

Wolves (joint 11th on 51 pts)

Newcastle
Burnley (33 pts needed for safety)
Brentford

Comments:
Brentford returned to being the most improved side in comparative terms (9 pts up on their comparative tally), just ahead of Southampton (8 points up).

Newcastle are the worst performing team in comparative terms (9 points worse off than last season), just ahead of Aston Villa, Leicester and Manchester Utd (8 points down).

Wolves managed to add 3 comparative points by winning at home to West Ham (last season: 2-3 loss) to improve to a season best of 6 extra points than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.5 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 7th.

Newcastle are the worst performing team in comparative terms (9 points worse off than last season), just ahead of Leicester and Manchester Utd (8 points down). With a third of the season now gone, West Ham are the only team who have exactly the same points as last season from the comparative fixtures.

Wolves were unable to repeat last season's victory in the comparative fixture (a 1-0 win at Fulham) and so drop down to being 4 points better off than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.31 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 9th.

That feels about right. 6th is flattering us because of some relatively easy fixtures recently, while 9th feels fair for where we are as a team at the moment.

6 teams failed to fulfil their league programme during this matchday so this isn't the complete picture after 17 games.
After not playing, Brentford remain the most improved side in comparative terms (13 pts up on their comparative tally), comfortably ahead of Liverpool and Southampton (both 9 points up).

Newcastle worsened their position as the worst performing team in comparative terms (now 14 points worse off than last season), ahead of Leicester (8 points down).

Wolves improved on last season's result at Brighton (3-3 draw) and so improve to being 7 points better off than last season, our best position of the current season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.412 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 8th.

Once again, 6 teams failed to fulfil their league programme during this matchday so this isn't the complete picture after 18 games and, subsequently, there has been little change in the comparative table.

After not playing, Brentford remain the most improved side in comparative terms (13 pts up on their comparative tally), comfortably ahead of Southampton (9 points up).

Newcastle did manage to play but could not record any improvement and so remain 14 points worse off than last season. Leeds, who also played, are now the second worst team in comparative terms (10 points down).

Wolves failed to repeat last season's win over Brighton (2-1) and so drop back to 5 points better off than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.278 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 9th.

After a highly disjointed Christmas programme of games, most teams are on a different number of games played and so not all have completed the scheduled 21 games. Wolves, for instance, have 2 games still to catch up and, owing to the Arsenal postponement, have still yet to play every team in the division at least once. Only two teams have fulfilled all their fixtures (Man City and Chelsea).

From the games played to date, Southampton are now the most improved side in comparative terms (13 pts better off). Brentford are in second place (12 pts ahead of their comparative tally).

Newcastle remain the worst team in comparative terms (13 points worse off than last season), ahead of Leicester (11) and Leeds (10).

By winning at Old Trafford, Wolves recorded a much improved result (last season: 0-1 loss) and so improve to a new season best of 8 points more than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.38 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 8th.

Bruno would've worked wonders over the second half of the season if he can manage this. Our 11 is pretty good but our depth is pretty horrendous due to FOSUN pulling back on investing in the team.

Tbh every thread on here comes back to us over-achieving despite lack of investment from Fosun. The message is abundantly clear - put your hands in your pockets Fosun. We are 7, yes just 7, points off 4th with a game in hand. With a defence that keeps clean sheets we need extra quality further up the pitch to give us a genuinely serious possibility of Europe this season.

Southampton remain the most improved side in comparative terms of those in the division last season (12 pts better off), while Brentford also remain 12 pts ahead of their comparative tally. Wolves have now moved into being the third most improved team.

Newcastle remain the worst team in comparative terms and worsened to being 15 points down on last season, ahead of Leicester (11) and Everton (10).

By beating Southampton, Wolves recorded an improved result (last season: 1-1) and so once again improve to a new season best of 10 points more than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.455 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 6th.

Southampton remain the most improved side in comparative terms of those in the division last season and managed to improve their comparative tally by holding Manchester City (now 13 pts better off), while Brentford also remain 12 pts ahead of their comparative tally. Wolves remain the third most improved team.

Leicester are now the worst team in comparative terms (13 pts down), ahead of Newcastle (12) and Everton and Leeds (both on minus 10).

By beating Brentford, Wolves managed to repeat the comparative victory of last season (2-0 away at Sheffield United) and so remain on the season best position of +10 points. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.438 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 6th.

Incidentally, this win puts Wolves' current points total ahead of the predicted safety line for the first time this season (currently at 32 points, and never having been above 34 points all season long).

Manchester City (75 pts needed for title)
Liverpool
Chelsea
Tottenham (66 pts needed to guarantee CL)
Manchester Utd
Arsenal
West Ham
Wolves (joint 8th on 55 pts)
Southampton
Leicester
Aston Villa
Leeds
Everton
Crystal Palace
Brighton
Brentford
Newcastle (32 pts needed for safety)
Watford
Burnley
Norwich

Comments:

Nice to see us doing so well, both in reality and comparatively.

Southampton remain the most improved side in comparative terms of those in the division last season and managed to improve their comparative tally once again by winning at Tottenham (now 16 pts better off), while Brentford remain in second, 12 pts ahead of their comparative tally.

Southampton remain the most improved side in comparative terms and managed to improve their comparative tally once again by drawing at Man Utd (now 17 pts better off), while Brentford remain in second, 13 pts ahead of their comparative tally. Wolves are the only other team with a double-digit improvement.

Leeds are now the worst team in comparative terms (15 pts down), ahead of Manchester United (-13) and Leicester (-12).

Wolves managed to record an improved result by winning at Tottenham (last season: 0-2 defeat) and so return to being 10 points better off than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.4 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 7th.

Only 4 rearranged games have been played since the weekend update, so most teams remain in the same situation.

Wolves were unable to repeat last season's victory at Arsenal (2-1) and so fall down to being 9 points better off than last season. We are therefore averaging an extra 0.346 points per fixture to date... a trend, which if you applied across the remaining fixtures, would mean Wolves would finish 7th.
