I mean if we get Collins/Nunes/Ramos + first team prospects and not selling anyone we'd have one of the highest net spends in the league.

Talking £100M

Seems fairly unfair standard to expect

Was going to say the same!

Reading about Leicester's woes today has changed my perspective. I fully expect Villa to go the same way, as will anyone other than Newcastle. Top half is a proper glass ceiling for any non Oil/Saudi rich club trying to assault the top 6

Yeah, Villa net spend thus far this summer is about £30M thus far as well + a free agent on big wages.

My instinct is that their wage bill will catch up with them. Just like Everton's did. Signing expensive old players just won't work in the age of FFP (in my opinion, of course)

Kamara and that sevilla guy will be on big wages

Let alone all the other bits they do

100%. Think Kamara is a really good signing, Carlos is a risk. He has plenty of mistakes in him, as we saw when we played them but can be dominant.
I think that Coutinho will end up an albatross

The advantage Villa have at the moment is a big +£100m on their books for the next few years.

In that regard, they are a few seasons ahead of Everton, who made the same mistake of buying older, average players on big fees and wages after they sold Lukaku.

The key is selling high, but sticking to your guns of buying younger, good value, high potential players.

It's more likely than not that we will sign at least a couple of players before the window closes.

It's about the quality, Nunes and Ben Yedder would be top tier but I'd be happy with 2 players that will be considered for the first 11 regardless.

Realistically we will sign more players, still 40 off days until the window closes, patience needed.

Good point. Completely agree with your final point. I thought we had cracked it when we sold Costa + Cav for the crazy fees we did, but our selling has been poor since.

Yes, just a matter of timing really. We didn’t sell some players when we should have (Traore), let some others go too early (Goncalves) and perhaps kept the wrong players here when others have moved on.

But they can’t get every decision correct I suppose.

Villa will have a big negative knock on effect with the wages they are paying coutinho, Carlos and particularly kamara...reportedly over 200k a week....the other players will start demanding it or want out.....it's already having an impact with the young players....that Carney chukwuemeka is refusing to sign a new deal....it will be cause he doesn't think his offer is in line with the other midfielders.....

We all demand new signings but if we had signed Collins, Nunes and Ramos and chucked em loads more money than the current squad it would have only caused problems.......

Disagree

Villa had to sell grealish as a result of the big money signings beforehand

Interesting chat with an agent last night, he's confident we know what we are doing #justsayin
Interestingly I was told by a player represented by the same agent as at least one of our first team last week, and then a director at a top 6 club yesterday, that quite a few PL signings have gone through, but for whatever reason haven't been announced yet. This has been going on a few years now, but apparently it's especially bad this year. Asked my mate why and he said quite a few reasons, one player was announced 22 days after being signed last pre-season.

No idea if this includes Wolves btw

hoping to remain positive, for something next week at Compton.

If noise is right and sellers stating we are working on others I can only expect two more will come in

May be the 5 substitutes rule means Bruno is going to mix it up a bit, young legs and old heads, swapping for old heads and young legs..

The under 23/21s didn't have a problem scoring goals last season and there have been very few loaned out so far.
Bruno does not like to make subs.
He sees it as a weakness.

Not a scoobies what you've said but I think I agree 100%.
We've invested massively in the academy over the last few years and the only way we attract the best young talent is to blood them and give them a chance to shine. If not then the best young talent won't come here. Pointless building an academy to sell player to Birmingham for nominal fees.
This is the only way clubs like us can get close to the sky 6 and so we have to give these lads the chance.

Imo opinion anyway!

Yow'm easy to please ay ya.Not a Scoobies what I've said but agree 100%.
I like it.

On a similar but different note I am lead to believe that Freddie Mercury died before it was announced, but the news was held back to guarantee a Christmas number one.....

Most people tend to die before it is announced that they have passed ;)

Although recently there has been a spate of people being prematurely announced as snuffing it, on social media.

Yeah, and I’ve made that argument as well, but the E&S lads (invited to training by the team) have said that a striker is definitely coming in, just maybe not this week. I doubt Wolves would let them say that if there wasn’t some truth there.
Didn't Jeff Shi say that Kenny jackett was fine then next day he was fired or something similar. So if they said it was daytime I would still look. Just saying....

Just for anyone who thinks I’m crazy for thinking a new signing could be announced at the friendly tomorrow, Dybala is basically being announced at tonight’s Sporting/Roma friendly.
That's probably because their owners are a little more on the pulse . Ours were but seems we are a like a dingy in the sea just drifting hoping something happens . Remember Shi buying pints in the pub . Doubt that will be happening anytime soon as the handbrake is firmly on imo.

for those of us without a subscription to the athletic can you explain why Leicester aren’t signing players!
Basically they have a massive wage bill, owe 276m and have loads of players with no resale value on big contracts. A big bet on their part

He might do a good Frank Wignall, come on, throw his weight around, cause completely different problems for a defence, make his presence felt and grab a few goals.
Benteke is the definition of a zero goals striker. We specialise in them

Think the problem is more creating chances than missing them. Hwang has missed a couple of sitters tbf but I can barely remember Raul missing a sitter all season. He tends to stick his chances away. But he spends most of his games trying to do stuff away from the goal, which then takes us back to the style issue and the type of football we played for the vast majority of last season. Very dull. Even when we were playing okay and picking up points, think about Leeds away and clinging on for dear life for 80 mins, Villa away where we got battered for 80 mins then something wild happened, etc. Very few games I thought we played really well in. I remember West Ham at home being a fully deserved win and good performance. Spurs away we had a great first 50 mins. Watford at home. But I genuinely can’t remember many others during the season. It was all a bit meh after the opening few games where we played well and ridiculously lost them all.

So let’s see what the next few weeks bring. But buying a striker changes nothing unless everything changes behind Raul/new striker too.
The problem often is lack of players in the box, so we can't pass into a scoring position because no one is there. In my opinion the one player we have who could have done that this year, has been sent to anderlecht

Not really surprised re. Leicester.

Everyone usually gets excited about the few who’ve worked out and they’ve resold for big sums and sings their praises but forgets the dross they’ve took big hits on.

They’ve spent £150m on strikers since they won the PL and still require Jamie Vardy to rescue their season every year.
