Let's hope Ward doesn't get injured.

Don't know about that GW, Elokobi is so poor that even if Ward were out I'd not want to see George take over. He gets out of position so often, is easily turned and so lacking in the basics he embarrasses himself and the team.

Nice bloke blah de blah but simply not good enough.

Wish him well at Forest which is about his level of football.

Has me wondering if Zubar is ready because he can play anywhere across the back 4?

I reckon Foley would get moved across if Ward got injured. Or maybe Berra at a stretch?

I know what you mean but regardless of that, the fact we don't have another specialist LB is worrying.

It means square pegs in round holes if Wardy does pick up a knock.

Berra, Zubar and Foley.

Three square pegs I'd rather see at left back ahead of George anyway if Ward got injured.

Harsh on George, but he's probably 3rd/4th choice left back now, considering that both Bassong and Egg'ead can play there.

I like him as a person but he's been a liability at times this season.

GW, this issue has been mentioned many a time and when you think Ward has been converted to this position, and very sucessfully I must add, it does beg the question of why has there never been a better back up signed on?

With so many players moving out in the transfer window compared to so few coming in it does seem a strange decision to let yet another player go but being perfectly honest I don't like even seeing Elokobi on the bench as it means there is the risk of him actualy getting on the pitch at some time.

I believe Foley can play either side as can Zubar so I wonder if with the choices available Mick sees both of them as better options to cover at LB if needs be and hence Elokobis move?

No doubt the worse left back I have ever seen in a Wolves shirt who has about as much use as a chocolate bridge!!

But in saying that we now have no cover for the left back slot in which should have being taking care of in the window.

He is nowhere near good enough for the premiership but our squad is starting to look worringly weak. Letting Guedioura go until the end of the season was a mistake. A short term loan for a month would have been the better option and this goes for Doherty too. I hope we dont get too many more injuries.
Reckford is only on loan at Scunthorpe for a month. Maybe the plan is for him to come back and challenge Ward for the left back slot?

A little harsh but I don't really disagree. Although not too sure about the "chocolate bridge" simile - "fireguard" and "kettle" hit the spot a bit better :D

The last credible LB we signed was Jelle Van Damme who looked excellent in the all few times he infrequently appeared on the pitch - shame his head wasn't in the right place.

As others have said - now "former square peg" Wardy has made the position his own both at club and International level we have ample cover from other squad members, albeit notional "square pegs".

I'm more worried about the frightening lack of cover up front.

Good luck Big George - you're a Molineux legend for sure and will always be remembered fondly whatever happens in the future !

Ward is fit for the WBA game, after that we don't have a game for a fortnight - and we can recall him after a month.

In that space of time, he'll be given match practice, which like Guedioura - he desperately needs.

Interesting views on Big George. Last season there was huge debate about Ward v Elokobi for Left back. I weighed in a few times siding with Ward, because of his footballing ability and link play with Jarvis. The majority appeared to favour George at the time (and Ward still has the tag of MM's love -child I note from a posting on another thread a day or two ago). Has George really disimproved so much since last season? Or Ward improved so much? Or have poeple realised that putting in big tackles at times is great, but that a full-back today needs a lot more to their game? Actually, I think some of the posts are a bit cruel to George- and probably unfair. He has scored some good goals for us and puts his heart into each game he plays; but I guess you do have to acknowledge that he he lacks the ball skills to really make it in the Premiership. I thought him useful back-up to have around in case of injury, but I think my great sense of relief that MM cannot now play him LB on Sunday and move Ward to CM probably says it all.

Don't think any of us could doubt his enthusiasm and I'm sure most, if not all, Wolves fans like him as a person for the way he comes across but he simply isn't good enough at PL level and Mick should have moved him on and brought in better before this season even started.

To be "not quite stepping up to the Premier League" coming from Dulwich FC isnt really bad going. Don't think there's too much shame in that. A limited "footballer" but a huge part of our obviously great teamspirit. Hope he pulls up trees at Forest.

Essex Wolf

Still think Stearman is a decent CH but being played at RB so often his flaws/faults are highlighted more so and as such he gets criticised.

Berra is a decent CH without being great and as a back up I'd like to see him stay but neither of those you mention would feature as regular first team players once better were signed up.

Can't say I'm overly bothered by this. George played well in a handful of games last season but has been below-par whenever selected this term. Ward, Bassong and Jonnson can all supposedly play left-back so we should be covered. Surprised though, given that our squad is shrinking by the day as it is.

I think you're all being a bit harsh on Elokobi - when he's had a decent run in the side he's looked ok. When he has a bit of confidence he plays the ball out of defence reasonably well and can be goal threat from corners and set pieces. He had some really good games in our run in last season and was immense up at Sunderland, scoring a goal to boot - a very important goal. To call him the worst left back we've ever had is rubbish. In our slide down the divisions we had far worse players. All that said, he's probably not up to Premier League standard. Championship is probably his level but I think he's a useful squad member and he seems to have a very positive affect on the changing room.

Good luck at Forest George, I hope that's not the last we've seen of you.

Akaman
09-02-2012, 15:21
Will never know how much his bad injury really set him back because his improvement up until then was huge, and in the two and a half years he's been fit since, he's only played in fits and starts which is going to make it tough for any player to perform to a high standard.

Can't believe people are mentioning the egg as an option though, after his performances so far I'd rather see George in the egg's position than the other way round.

Not impressed to be honest. Not sure that now is the time to offload the 'deadwood'. In George, despite his limits you had somebody who wouldn't shirk or shrink and get on with it, and we need characters like that.

Oh dear, ever ready to dance on a man's grave. Do some of you ever give up. George is a good servant to our club. He may have struggled in his natural position as left back but he always gave 100%. I don't believe any of us can ask any more of a player. Thanks George and best of luck wherever the game takes you and that may very well be back to the Mol.
Another option we have at left back in the event of an injury to Ward is Anthony Forde who is naturally left footed and I believe has played there for the Academy and reserves on occasion.

We give these players contracts in order to maintain their value. We made a profit on Neil Collins and may do the same with George.

Better than allowing their contracts to run down and for them to later leave on a free.

Maybe an Irwinesque right footed left back is an option as this tack would have definitely prevented the first goal at the Poorthorns earlier in the season . Brunt a left footed player playing on the right was always going to be more dangerous coming -inside-this is easier to stop when the ful back is stronger on that side.Similarly Thomas comes inside from the left for the ***** so a left footed right back negates the threat. The wideman is responsible for any overlapping fullback runs-simple!!
