View Full Version : Bassong as defensive midfielder?

With today's news regarding Frimpong, should we try Bassong in this role until Karl is back? Or give Milijas another chance?

Am I right in thinking Bassong has played defensive mid before?

--------Hennessey

Foley Johnson Berra Ward

---------Bassong
Kightly ---------- Jarvis
----------O'hara

------Doyle/Edwards

---------Fletcher

no no no no no. hes here to tighten up our defence. no more round pegs in square holes. frimpong is a big blow but nothing we shouldnt be able to deal with. when he went off we showed we still have a team that can push up this league.

didnt think the high of winning would last long on here. back to more negative stuff.

Never ever heard of Bassong in defensive mid.. but maybe im wrong

Either way he had a brill game at centre back why change that?

Defensive Mid options who have played there before or as quite clear more worth a try than a gamble:

Edwards, Stearman (Played centre mid for u21's in championship season), Henry, Milijas, Jonsson, O'Hara.

Infact why not just recall Guedioura/Davis if we are that short on midfield? Whats with the whole trying people in defensive mid position threads..

Sorry if this was discussed in another thread, merge if appropriate. I did a quick search, but must have missed it.

I'm only suggesting Bassong for the game against the $$$$, as Karl will be back after that and I liked Bassong and Johnson at the back too.

Are Milijas and Eggy the only other option then?

To be honest, I can see him playing 4-4-2 and us getting battered in midfield.

No effing way. we need him in defence. Our defence before Bassong was conceding goals for fun. I'm convinced with the acquisition of Bassong and the return of foley and Zubar, our defence will significantly improve to the extent that I think we'll stay up easily!!!

Bassong stays in defence.

Just found out he played DM twice for France under-21s, for what it's worth.

For the sake of clarity I really think his partnership with Johnson will work out. It's great having a centre-half who can play a bit. Just for me Milijas(great on his day) and Eggy(still have open mind even after L'pool) are a bigger risk for Sunday.

Why are some of the suggestions ridiculous suggestions?
Zubar has played there in his career as has Bassong.
Who would you play in the role on Sunday?

Gotta be Eggy Jonsson, he is obviously the next Steven Gerrard! :D

On a serious note, would have said Guedioura but he is on loan! Would give Zubar a chance though, he is good on the ball and powerful going forward. Is he fit?

Until he pops up and scores against Man Utd. Leave the guy alone. He has more heart than most other players. Not the most skillful, I agree, but he still has a role to play in our squad.

I think he resumed training towards the end of last week. I would have also prefered Guedioura to still be here. There is also the young lad Davis at Chesterfield.

From what I saw of Davis against Olham he really struggled! A Black Country derby would be a mistake. Guedioura, I just don't think he is as good as everyone thinks he is........Zubar isn't a bad idea in my opinion! Whatever anyone says he is a big unit and would be pretty intimidating, he likes to get forward though, is he disciplined enough to play a DM role?

The amount of free kicks we would give any in threatening positions would be crazy.

Not really what we want when players like Van Persie, Rooney, Silva and co step up later in the season

Exactly why not put Zubar as DM he has played there before with some success nothing ridiculous about that. Not in favour of Elokobi in that position though.

A great article to read. I was amazed at how little we were hoofing it up the field compared to normally, even in the first 30 minutes when we were under the cosh. Bass and Frimp as summer acquisitions please SM.

Gued is $$$$

both have a cult status but those who have bought into this charade need to understand thats all it is... they lack ability at this level and were in no position to carry passengers let alone liabilities.

We can only hope. With Fletch on a goal drought and SEB and Doyler not reliable we could use the Austrian goal machine here.

Bassong needs to be played in his natural position if he is to be of real benefit.

With Frimpong out and Henry suspended Micks options are limited admitedly but he still has Edwards, O'Hara, Milijas and Hunt to choose from as well as Foley although I would prefer he were played at RB.

Do we still hold Terry Connors registration? How about a return to football for Roy Keane on a free? Maybe we could start with ten men and hope temptation gets the better of Keith Downing and he rips off his Albion jacket revealing a wolves shirt before performing a fearsome two footed career ender taking out Odemwingie, Long, Morrison, Brunt, Elokobi, Lee Hughes and Fostlinngtanham, before throwing his shirt off in disgust at Richard Sneekes, pulling out much of his long blond locks due to some stray superglue on Keith's blood-drenched shirt. Plausible.
