From Redknapp

...Wolves want to sign Sebastien Bassong but he will need to complete a deal for an unnamed defender before he lets that one go through.

You know what'll happen:

1: We're 'told' Bassong is potentially on his way but Spurs never sign their defender. Jez will say "we tried really hard but not quite".

2: QPR see this and step in, offer him 3 times as much. Jez will say "we tried really hard but QPR just offered him too much, we don't want mercenaries".

3: Bsssong would rather shoot himself in the face than come here. Jez will say "we tried really hard but Bassong said he'd rather shoot himself in the face than come here and we don't want non-committed players. Mick is happy with his squad".

Will Bassong make all of the difference anyway?
With the current manager more anti hoofball and Eggert Jonnsson in the team and no Hammill or Milijas ever given a run. I think unless McCarthy goes we have got zero chance of staying up whether we sign Bassong or not. He'll probably play Bassong right back anyway!

And we're still only a point from safety (albeit Bolton and Blackburn have a game in hand) - so it's not all doom and gloom.

Great news on an otherwise very disappointing night.

As much as I would have loved us to spend some serious money, if someone had said that we would have signed Frimpong and Bassong on loan at the start of the window, I would have been happy (I'm choosing to ignore Jonsson after tonight). Sensible to look for loans too considering our precarious position.

So our fully fit first 11 is something like this

Hennessey

Zubar Johnson Bassong Ward

Kightly Frimpong Henry O' Hara Jarvis

Fletcher

Those players should be able to get enough points to stay up, surely? Only problem is the managers ability to get the best out of them consistently.

I like the look of that team . . let's hope we can keep them fit till the end of the season and we should be 'fine'

Haven't seen us play in the flesh this season, but from all I've read and heard then Berra has been head and shoulders above Johnson so far.

XDevonwolf

We STILL need a left-back!!!!!!!!

Ward isn't good enough (he just doesn't think like a defender), and Elokobi has become a joke. This weakness puts pressure on the rest.

It could be interesting to see where Bassong fits in, as he could play defensive midfield.

those were the days
01-02-2012, 00:09
I hope we go with Craddock and Bassong. I hope Bassong can rediscover his Newcastle form as he's had a stop-start last few years and gone backwards. It's certainly not a riskless signing, but it's a sensible and needed one and a loan suits all parties.

Also worth remembering that dropping Berra and Stearman and playing Craddock and Mancienne made a difference at the back end of last season. Despite all Mick's defensive signings, a fit JC is still arguably the best CB at the club.

I'd also prrmanently give the captain's armband to Craddock, Henry, Ward or even O'Hara who've all earned the right to be captain.

The signings are ok but it's too little too late. Bassong might shore us up but our wide men are all woefully short of form and we don't have pace up front to stretch the opposition when we are struggling for possession. Once again in our best counter attack it was Fletcher who had the ball out wide, crossing to no-one.

Instead of taking heed of last seasons mistakes we just hoped for the best. It was gross mismanagement to fail to acknowledge that PL managers work teams out after a while. We have one way of playing- find the wingers- before resorting to kabbadiball.

If the club realised this pre-season I could have probably handled it. I was under the impression the club were trying to grow organically, young and hungry, etc. Instead we abandoned policy, raised expectations with talk of top ten finishes and fed the fans the usual early bird spin. Morgan talked out in the press about the average football fan being priced out of the game and hinted that the growth of the clubs infrastructure would allow the economies of scale to bring pricing down a bit. It's like being told you're getting a horse for Christmas and getting a nice jumper instead- if the 3M's hadn't raised expectation so much they would probably be alright, if they had stuck to their principles they would still have some supporters. Instead they look like they haven't a clue what they are doing other than preparing for probable relegation- and two loan signings don't do much to challenge that view.

I agree with that, expectation fed by the club to us fans, and they fail to back it up.

On current showing we could do with about nine players, but to bring in the two we have, albeit temporary, was good business even if bassong is a couple weeks later than needed. Both frimpong and bassong will be great for us for the rest of the season.

My disappoint here is the fact we cleared away players and wages this month, and spent only 200,000 in the window on a fringe player.

Therein lies the problem. Nothing will change on Saturday with the current manager and coach here!
It will be the same old backing off players, defensive errors, no creativity, cant keep hold of the ball dour football rubbish! With the likes of Hunt and Elokobi on the bench with no sign of Hammill and Milijas left out for Eggy!

Signing 1 centre back wont make a difference to us, We lack quality in far too many positions and we have a leader that isn't leading us at the moment. Without trying to sound negative but being realistic Bassong was 5th choice centreback at Spurs behind Gallas, King, Kaboul and Dawson and suddenly he's going to save our season! it won't happen. Our problem is Mick, he's taken us as far as he can and now he's taking us where we came from.

Numpty
01-02-2012, 07:02
Bassong will be decent for us I think but we are too deep in trouble for one man to make a difference. From watching last night you can see the central midfield apart from Frimpong is very poor . Also the wingers did very little as they had no balls to run onto . I think we missed a trick in not strengthening the midfield. If the midfield is to deep we could have Joe Hart in goal with Terry and Cahill at the back and still ship goals.
