END OF AN ERA AS GALLAGHER CALLS IT A DAY
13/05/2005
One of the most experienced and longest-serving
players in non-League football, Jackie Gallagher,
has played his last competitive match.

Having made approximately 300 appearances for
Ridgeons League club Wisbech Town and scoring
152 goals – fourth on the all-time scoring list – since
lining up for the first time aged 16 in the 1974/75
season, Gallagher, 47, bowed out last Saturday
playing for the reserves with manager Stuart Webb
and special guest Roy McManus coaching from the
sidelines.

During his illustrious career spanning more than
thirty years, Gallagher played League football with
Lincoln City, Peterborough United, Torquay and
Wolves after first joining the ranks of the Fenmen at
the tender age of 14 before turning full circle three
decades later with Fenland Park again the backdrop.

He also had spells in Ireland, Hong Kong and
Scandinavia, playing alongside World Cup winning
England captain Boby Moore in Hong Kong.

Lots of memories and despite manager Webb's
efforts to try and persuade Gallagher to line up for
another year next season, he said that apart from the
odd veterans' game and joining in training sessions,
Saturday's match was his swan song.

Next season, however, he will carry on his role of
training Wisbech's youth squad hoping to build
youngsters into disciplined and savvy players who
might later develop their careers.

"My ambition is to see one or two of the under-16
squad progress to play for Wisbech first team and
even to go into League football," he said.

Gallagher (pictured) began his own career under the
watchful gaze in those days of Bert Roseberry.

After all those years and just 24 hours before
Saturday's match at Fenland Park, Gallagher said he
would treat the match as just another game but was
looking forward to concentrating on his role at youth
level and trying to build on that.

He also reflected on the nostalgic news that the
Fenmen are about to sell Fenland Park after over fifty
years of memories for fans saying that memories
were hard to recapture and that to get fans to travel
out of town to follow a team would require having a
winning side.

During his own career, Gallagher feels that he might
have gone higher "had I been a bit sharper," but has
no regrets over the way the dice have rolled.

However one painful memory he would change was
the semifinal FA Vase defeat of 1984/85 when
Wisbech Town lost 1-0 to Halesowen Town in game
three of their encounter, missing out on a place at
Wembley.

"It would have been special to see manager Roy
McManus leading us out at Wembley and under the
current rules of football, having drawn 1-1 here and
2-2 away, there would never have been a third
game," he reflected.

But life moves on and now Gallagher, with a healthy
dislike of bad language and indiscipline in the
game, promises to do his bit for football at youth
level.

"With young players, you have got to instil discipline
and teach them the right attitude. At Wisbech, we
don't allow swearing and insist on discipline since
as soon as the players reach 18 they will be playing
against men."

Another thing Gallagher will miss is the banter, the
camaraderie that over thirty years in the game
brings.

Gallagher himself will be missed.

However things might continue sooner than we think
– in the shape of daughter Ellie, who plays for
Wisbech St Mary under-17s, and son Joe, who lines
up for Wisbech St Mary under-14s.

Gary Bellamy lives down Essex way I believe in the Braintree/Chelmsford area. He played non league football for both Chelsmford City and Brantree Town up to not so many years ago.As to what he is now doing, sorry can't help.

They ARE legends!! For the Bhatti generation these guys are heroes!! In recent years we've not had a squad of 'triers' such as these, thats for sure. They may not have been the most skillful, but at least they gave the impression they cared and wanted to win.

Floyd Streete returned to Berkshire where I understand he is still a PE Teacher.

I don't know why they don't get some of these guys on the pitch at half time reliving the old days, after all, the supporters love to sing about the old days so why not go the whole hog.
