I have just paid nearly £50 for a check up, x-ray, 2 fillings and a scrape & polish.smileys/smiley7.gif I feel as though i'vebeen ripped off?

How can you prove that you don't need a filling? Is there anywhere you can go for a second opinion? smileys/smiley9.gif

I think that dentist's have a monopoly and should be monitored by the office of trading. smileys/smiley2.gif

I pay £15.04 every 9 months for a checkup and a bit of polishing where required, seems reasonable.

Six months ago I went to see my dentist who informed me that my teeth were fine but it would be a good idea to pull one of my Wisdom teeth and so he booked me in with the local Hospital as it would be too difficult to do at the surgery. With this in mind I didn't take up my companies expensive dental plan.

Six months later...

Go to Hospital who state that it is an easy extraction which could be completed by a trainee, the consultant commented that on £70,000 a year the dentist probably didn't think he was paid enough to do this sort of thing and put me on a six month waiting list. Having wasted the day I went back to my surgery to complain and here the 'Fun' begins...

I requested to change dentists, which they said was OK but could I wait to have a quick checkup with my new one. It turns out not only was my original dentist workshy he also missed 8 fillings which desperatly needed doing. I had two done that day (£150) and have the next3 weeks of drilling to look forward to, and this bit hurts more, with no dental insurance.

These dentists and pick and choose whatever prices they want to and we (the consumer) have little or no choice. smileys/smiley7.gif

I suppose it's a case of supply and demand. Too many patients and not enough dentists.smileys/smiley2.gif

Three years ago I had 3 crowns, 3 fillings, an extraction and the usual
polish etc - £350!
This was a reduced price because I was actually an NHS patient - if I
wasn't then the price would have been......£1000.

Yes my teeth were in a state - this was not due to be being a greedy
choco-holic but to drugs administered when I was a child which have
subsequently weakened my teeth.

Forgot to say - since my £350 bill at the dentist, I am no longer an NHS
patient because my dentist decided to come off the NHS register.
Their excuse - too many patients and they had too many appointments
every day. They are now a private practice and probably considerably
richer than beforel.

My local dentists decided to leave the NHS. I stuck with them for a couple
of visits until I received an estimate in excess of £500 for preparatory
work and fitting a crown. We negotiated reduced treatment for around
£200. I subsequently located another dentist, not too far away, who still
operated a limited NHS. The waiting room is much nicer too but the
receptionist threw a wobbly on my last vist because I could only pay by
debit card.

I pay 12 squids a month which includes 2 check-ups 4 polish/scrape thingys
and free x-rays. My teeth are generally not that good so a plan suits me
better as I get 25% off all treatment. My nearest NHS dentist is 5 miles away
in possibly the worst area of Birmingham. £12 a month seems worth it to
me.

I used to go to an NHS dentist and had some work done last year, including some bridgework (yes, I know people think I've got a big mouth and this goes to prove it!) paying for the more expensive, white looking stuff....then my dentist was bought out by a new partnership and I developed an abscess...after a load more work, including being told that some people can react to the white filling I ended up having a nerve removed and complete new bridgework and a bill of around £500.....I was told that it would be difficult to prove the abscess would not have occurred anyway, or even had not already begun beforethe work was started, but they agreed to knock off £50 because I had paid extra for the first bridge.

Now it costs about £30 for check ups etc when it used to cost £14....but can you find an NHS dentist around here with any spaces...fat chance.smileys/smiley7.gif

This is what happened to me when I was young...well actually the dentist was drilling perfectly good teeth as well, which left me with a nightmare....and him disappearing off with his dental nurse with the police in hot pursuit.

It's extremely rare to hear of a dentist going out of business. I supposed the same could be said aboutfuneral directors as well.It certainly isn't a dying trade. Excuse the pun. smileys/smiley9.gifhttp://www.molineuxmix.co.uk/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
