Hello,

First post here although do occassionally lurk to see what people are talking about. Never posted on the old MM but did sometimes have a look at what was going on.

One thing I have noticed is that some of you seem to be quite up on your technology. I recently had my digitial camera stolen and I have a budget of about £200 to replace it. Any recommendations for a good point and shoot sort of camera. I used to have a Olympus which I brought two years agobut I guess the technology has moved on a bit since then...

Thing that puts me off with Sony is you have to use their own memory sticks. But if you recommend it then that's good. Do you know the model?

DSC-W5.

You may be able to get the 7MP W7 for 200 quid....

Its easy enough to use.....simply connect the USB cable up and the memory stick looks like a removable drive...

Any camera that could zoom in a bit closer on her would be good: http://jase28th.fotopic.net/p17596860.html

I've got a Sony 5.1MP one too, the DSC-W1. Got it cheap from PixMania beginning of the year for £180 because it was being discontinued, though there are similar models available now.

A warm welcome Wimbledon Wolf...

It depends on what sort of pics you're looking to take.
I wish I had invested in one that you could use
underwater. I'd bear this in mind when you make
your choice.

Pixmania have very competitive prices and seem to
give excellent service...but do you want to support a
French company??

I useda little Nikon for a couple of years with good results but there is a delay with a large memory card above say 32mb. However the results were very good. It was about £200 I think. One important thing is to get one with decent software if you are going to edit and print your own. I now have a Canon EOS but it cost more. Cant emphasise enough the need for good software though.

Thanks for all the advice and the warm welcome. Can't see me using it for anything more adventurous than holiday and family snaps. Quite tempted by the black Sony P200 http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/84574/art/sony/cyber-shot-ds (http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/84574/art/sony/cyber-shot-dsc-p200-black.html) c-p200-black.html#

but it's doing my head in now so I'll think i'll stop looking at them now.

This site;

is pretty detailed when it comes to camera reviews.

I went for an Olympuc C-70 Zoom (7M and 5x optical zoom) - very, very nice methinks.

I bought a Canon A520 Powershot from Jessops for £200 but you can get it cheaper online. Its a 4 megapixel camera with fully auto mode or fully manual mode and lots of modes in between. It has a 3x optical zoom and also a 7x digital zoom.

Its really easy to use. Even my wife who dislikes any sort of technology picked it up and used it without having to read the manual.

I've had fantastic pictures from it and I haven't even set it on maximum resolution.
