The current spin from the England camp is that, in the qualifying campaign, "lesser" sides always play a negative game against us and are difficult to break down. As a consequence, we havehad to grind out results and have not looked too impressive. However, we have now qualified and, when "better" teams come and attack us in the World Cup proper, we'll give them a good pasting.

This is, of course, an argument that we are very familiar with at Wolves and, of course, we often bemoan our lack of creativity when faced with such defensive tactics.

The difference is that we are not in possession of the best players in the country whereas Sven is. Now he might argue that the likes of Austria putting 10 men behind the ball is a bit harder to break down than Burnley for instance. Nevertheless, if his claim that we can win the World Cup is to be taken as anything other than empty boasting, he has to improve our performances significantly against lesser and better teams alike.

It is naive to suggest that the likes of Brazil, Germany and France will simply play an attacking game and allow us space to 'express ourselves.' Even if they do, if they score first, we have shown a marked lack of ability to come back against quality teams before, and Sven has displayed a marked lack of ability to change the tactics when plan A is failing.

I hope I'm wrong and Sven is right, but at the moment I can only foresee another frustrating quarter-final exit.

sven's problem is that he is too negative

brazil 2002 - who scored first?

portugal 2004 - who scored first?

we get ahead against good sides and then try to to play what we have we hold and our players are not suited to that type of thinking

He's quoted this morning as saying that he is far too stubborn a man to quit the England job before his contract runs out in 2008. I think this stubborness is a characteristic of his tactical planning too. He thinks he knows what is best and fails to react to changing situations on the pitch.

His idea of changing the course of a game seems to be putting Hargreaves on with 10 minutes to go. Radical!

I agree North Herts, both Sven and Hoddle are of the same mould, stubborn one dimensional, self obsessed, overpaid under achievers...both need to be replaced....good post.

My frustration was aimed more at Sven, although my implicit criticism of Hoddle didn't escape you I see smileys/smiley2.gif. To be fair though, whereas Hod doesn't necessarily have the players on the bench to change a game, Sven bloody well should have. Edited by: N. Herts Wolf

although glenn is slightly better looking sven has had more shags though.

with most teams playing 1 up front at the mol(including ussmileys/smiley5.gif) why dont we switch to 3 at the back? it was runoured sven was trying out different formations in training this week and has picked a 4-4-2 team again, he hasnt convinced me we can win the world cup even though we have a very very good squad apart from the flag pole up frontsmileys/smiley2.gif
