In Intensive Care in London. Will he ever learn or is it tragically getting to the point where its too late?
Did any of the posters on this board see him in action? Was he as good as those of us too young to know for sure have been led to believe?

that is sad - but also pretty inevitable

In his day Best was superb and IMHO one of the all time greats.
Much as I hope he gets better I sadly feel your comment about it being too late may be right.
He's had a good life though and says he'd do exactly the same again.

I really don't care. THis man has had countless opportunities to sort himself out and he's wasted them all.

interesting
best does this with alcohol and the reaction is quite mixed compared to the deserved slating that Pete Doherty was getting last week.
just because a drug is legal it doesn't make best any less of an addict and he has got behaving like abeaver down pat when he's had a few.

Deserves everything he gets. Magnificent footabller aside the way he
used his fame to seemingly cunjure up another liver at the expense of
someone equally needy but not famous sufferer then abuse it is nothing
short of criminal.

Too right. His relationship with his parents and son leaves a lot to be desired as well.A lot of people see him as a 'character' cos he might have a funnyanecdote or two. The man is an ar*e.Edited by: Templeton Peck

bill, sincere condolences.
as for george, he's had his chance, told by surgeon if he stopped altogether after his transplant he would be ok, a true addict to alcohol, nothing to be proud of, he could have had all those women without the need to drink copious amounts of champagne and spirits.
most of us like a drink, and most of us have been rat arsed at some stage, he just did it too much

My thoughts are with you and your friends family over what sounds like such a tragic loss.
Interesting comments for a man who has an illness??
Just because his illness happens to be that he is an alcoholic does that mean that he then deserves everything that is coming to him??
I'm not so sure that it does.

Same here basher. It said on Sky he's got a kidney infection.
That can happen when you've got somebody else's liver in your body,
doesn't mean it's directly connected to booze this time.

He has got an infection which has been caused by the drugs he is taking to stop him drinking.

as others have said, best can go $$$$$$ himself. hes had the chances, hes
had the life he wanted now if he does die i doubt many will observe the
inevitable minutes silence as they would for other great past players

There are some really compasionate people on this this board, an acqaintance of mine died last week, he`s liver mashed and skin a very nice shade ofyellow,so called friendsused to have a laugh with him when he downed a pint dead quick then hadseveral more anddidnt get $$$$$ed, and of course the landlord is only to pleased to sell it. Eventually he became an addict he tried to get off the alchohol but the damage was done. What is making Best ill now is the same problem someone can have if they have any sort of transplant, imuno-suppressents.

nobody said it had to be drink related, The man was a bully and beater. Gets what he deserves
There are no doubt a multitude of reasons for someone becoming alcoholic, once they are it is very difficult to change.
Georges current condition has been caused by one of these reasons, he had a short career by most standards but was a wonderful player. His long and eventfull downfall in my opinion is sad.

Mixed feelings about this. Especially given that there's no mention of his condition over here in Aus. It always strikes me that nobody is ever perfect, and that often the people marked down for genius are actually the most flawed of all. Football has many examples of the most fantastic players being the most fragile characters. Often it seems to be linked to their relatively difficult formative years and often it's attributed to their coming by unaccustomed wealth very early in life combined with no sensible figure to guide them.
Gascoigne was a fantastic footballer who has fallen on very public hard times. Hopefully he's coming out of it relatively unscathed. Maradonna was one of the best the world has ever seen but got caught up in drugs and was close to death a year ago.
Best is another flawed genius of sport. His vice is alcohol and depending on your point of view he's suffering from an illness and needs help to fight it or he's simply a weak fool who has to help himself. Whichever way you see it (and I'm not sure which camp I fall into) it seems harsh not to be sympathetic and hope he recovers. I recognise that he has been extremely fortunate to have received his transplant given his circumstances. Equally his apparent self destructive streak makes him seem particularly callous in the way he has been unable to change his lifestyle given his new chance.
Life's cruel. It's not fair. For every George Best frittering away a life we'd give our right arm for there are a hundred totally deserving people who are struck down before their time.
I wish George Best a speedy and complete recovery. I wish he recognises that he's been incredibly lucky to have a second chance atlife and that he changes his lifestyle for the better.I suspect he'll disappoint me again.

The lad was/man isa waster. What a waste of a liver that someone else could have used to see more of life and spend with their beloved.
Great player, saw him for Man Utd and Fulham at Molineux and Old Trafford. Past his best when we beat Fulham 5-1 with him and Marsh in the side.
Quit 'proper' football at 27 - says it all really. Magnificent and foolish in equal measure.
We have one thing in common,a son called Calum, I would hope that my son would be at the hospital because he wanted to be tonight, and not calling his PR manager to line up a deal with the press about how tough it is seeing his father like this, and earning some wedge out of the situation.Edited by: Black Suit

<DIV>
That is a naive view, the liver would have been given on the basis of clinical need and availability, nothing else. No matter of money or notoriety could change that. There is also the issue of genetic/blood compatibility, transplant operationsare not a case of forming an orderly queueuntil the next road accident occurs. I could go on but I doubt itwould besuitable reading on this message board.
I hope George has a full recovery.</DIV>

Ironically, you are not far from the truth there HGW, orderly in terms of suitability and compatibility is correct. There would have been people (recipients) below Mr Best in queue in all likelihood, and therefore I stand by my comments.
Regarding his full recovery, he is a stranger to me, like most of his family is to him apparently, so all the bestto him BUThe has to play HIS part too.</DIV>

How anyone can say he deserves everything he gets is beyond me. He is a dying man, and as such I wish him all the best (no pun intended).
Ithink he's a t*****, I think he $$$$$$$ed by his life and wasted a transplanted liver,I think he has had more than one "second chance" already but, he is still a human being and as such should be treated like one.
Incidently, I agree with the Pete Doherty comments too - is there any difference? I read he also has implants to supress his heroin addiction?
im not saying he deserves what he gets cause he is an addict cause i
know that is something that is an illness that needs to be treated.
what im saying is that he has had more chances than the average jo in the street just because of who he is.
the mans a p***k, he could have had it all but quit when he should have been in his peak to indulge in the high life.
at least people like gazza had real indepth problems and dealt with
them with dignity and courage, anyone whos read his book will know what
i mean.
the difference being when gazza hit his wife he was truely gutted and
sick about it, best did it numerous times to different women and never
seemed to have any remorse whatsoever.
he was a great player yes but as a person hes a waster.
if it was a choice between him and someone else needing a liver
transplant i know who id have given it too because it was blatantly
obvious he wasnt gonna stop off the booze
