View Full Version : How much do you really know?

I would say that it is fairly obvious that the arrival of David Jones is not being as enthusiastically received as that of Vokes and Stearman. Of course, he may prove to be a poor signing, but writing him off before he has kicked a ball for the club – particularly when he played a key part in Derby’s successful promotion attempt of 2006-07 is a little unfair. We all hav have our prefernces as to who we would like to see patrolling the midfield ( Brian Howard or Nicky Bailey would be my choices ) but Mick is assembling a decent young squad at the moment and there is nothing to say that Jones IS Potter/Gibson just because on the few occasions you have seen him he hasn’t been what you might term impressive. Indeed, from what I can remember – he was impressive when Derby signed him wasn’t he? Would there have been the same opposition to this deal had we been looking at him two years ago?

Anyway, remember when we signed Mr. Ebanks Blake from Plymouth. Reactions were mixed to say the least……

Please god no.....thought he was absolutely crap for them against us at Plymouth and couldn't believe how overweight he was for a forward.....Hope they've got some XXL size shorts

I'd prefer a striker at this level to be on 30-35 goals (or greater) in fifty starts.
This chaps record is below 1 every two games ffs.

Another midget to add to our collection. When is Mick going to get the idea that we have good strikers just that our midfield is pants.

Perhaps Rosa is a make weight in the deal, makes sense.

Yours Bill McCai

To be fair, my comments weren't that bad. ;) I never said he was $$$$, just that he's a midget.

Our midfield is still pants by the way, hopefully David Jones can correct that.

However, with the help of hindsight I am thrilled SEB did eventually sign of course.

If Jones is a creative passer in the Palu Cook mould and can take good corners and free kicks, then he will be a welcome addition

I know... nothing. But that's not going to stop me posting balderdash and piffle on this site much like everyone else. When I do get something right, please feel free to dig it out and praise my foresight, judgement and all round footballing genius. ;)

I've not got a scouting network, it's just by gut feeling with me and most people probably. I was delighted by the Stearman signing, but this Jones doesn't do anything to get me excited by his imminent arrival.

I hope I am wrong because the center of midfield is a real mess IMO to many grafters and not enough creativity. I think Dave Edwards could be just as good as Jones, again it's only my gut feeling.

I'll be more than happy to see someone in the side that can take a decent corner, I know kites takes a few, but I'd far rather see mim made use of on the edge of the 18 box.

Sam, you have to realize that posting on a BB is not like talking to your mates in the pub, here some web hound will track you down, and attempt to make himself look clever by trying to make other people look a little foolish, often by quoting short phrases out of context.

For £1m it seems a decent signing. But if Olo is going and no other central midfielder is signed will we be in much the same position as before? I think some of us had hoped for a slightly higher profile midfield signing or two and Jones on the face of it seems a bit of a disappointment. Apart from Wolves only Preston showed any interest in him as far as has been reported. However, MM rates him so we shall see.

I think a more significant factor will be whether Mark Davies is going to finally step up to the mark or repeat his injury record and recede into obscurity again. If he can become the player we have all hoped he could then our promotion credentials will improve enormously and concerns about central midfield will evaporate. He is also probably the best cover we have for the wings assuming Gobern is going to struggle again. But if MM was wise he would bring in a specialist winger or at least get one on a season long loan. A repeat of S Ward on the wing will bring the boos from the terraces again.

You are right Bridgnorth. If we were signing Jonsavosky, Jonesetti, Jonesadona or Joanofarca the reaction would definitely be more favourable.

Patrolling the midfield....you sound like $$$$in John Motson's grandad mate. :D
How do you patrol a midfield anyway? You'd need a jeep and some binoculars surely?

Some derby remarks...

"Jonah is worth 2.5 million not 1.2. Wolves have got a snip at that fee."

also...

"People tend to be a bit split on this one.

The guy has talent no doubt. Sometimes tries to over elaborate and gets caught in possession but he's a good passer on his day and can strike a decent dead ball. He scored some important goals for us on the way up last time but then was Injured and when he came back he was ineffectual in the Prem (when he was given a game).

There are plenty of our sorry lot that I'd be glad to see the back of but Jones is one of those that when we play against him, I'll be hoping that it's the Jones of the last few months that turns up rather than the guy who played a part in getting us promoted"

Derby remarks about Jones kinda resemble some of ours about SGO

In and out abit and a little trepidation of them turning out against us

You must have pretty bad guts. Just about everyone knows that David Jones is a creative, ball playing midfield player which is the type of player to address the 'not enough creativity' in midfield. As for Dave Edwards, he's a player nothing like Jones - Edwards his a high energy box to box runner, he may be as good as but he will be different.

Jones can play on the LW and create from there, so it matters not if he is lightweight.
I've said before that having a playmaker on the wing gives them more time to pick out a pass. If he's central mid, then any of Henry, Edwards or Davies, who all have good engines, can play with him. Potter & Jones against teams who come here and put 10 men behind the ball would give us more chance of opening them up.

A good buy!

Not quite what the Derby supporters are saying, they seemed to indicated that he was at his best in a 5 man midfield when he didn't have to track back and became less effective when pushed wide in a four to the extent that Billy Davies dropped him for the play-offs. Which begs 3 questions - 1. Did Derby blow up because Davies changed the tactics switching from a 5 to a 4 in midfield and 2. Was Jones that good that when Davies moved him from his free role the wheels to a degree came off. 3. Did Jones just run out of steam?

Lets be honest, none of us see other teams players enough to guage how good bad or indifferent they are.

We see them 4 / 5 Times a season at most.

Twice, V Wolves
Two or three times on the TV.

Most of us have not got a clue how other teams players are performing.

We read what other people say about them, we see international call ups.

At the end of the day none of us know as much about a player, as MM or his scouts.

A couple of points re: Mr Jones...
1. At £1M for a 23 year old playmaker who has the potential to run our midfield - cant lose...
2. IF he has genuinely got over his injury we really have got a BARGAIN. It seems obvious to me that the lad has suffered from post injury comeback to a team that were the whipping boys of the Prem he is gonna be suffering from a lack of confidence [understandable]. Despite MM`s man-managing prowess [choke splutter] all we need will be a good start and you watch Mr Jones shine.
Please quote me on this should he turn out to be a Lemon [a la Elliott] - otherwise I will be using this to underline how right I usually am in about 6 months...

If Jones turns out to be another Paul Cook ( ok, slightly better ) we will be doing well. Henry will have to do the sweeping up up job, but that's what he does best anyway and we seem to have a multitude of other midfielders with various skills who will appreciate having the ball passed to them......as long as they all stay fit of course!

Goldwolf
28-06-2008, 18:55
I don't understand the Derby fan's comments about him only being a bit player. He played pretty much all their promotion season, then he was injured, then he played some more when he was fit. Doesn't seem like a fringe player on that basis.

More likely that Jewell did not buy him and Jewell is trying to build his own team.
