View Full Version : We have to try to epitomise what WBA have become

......hates me to say it, but on the pitch we must aspire to what they have got - can you imagine Wolves having to give tickets away for a tenner to fill the ground if we were in their position and playing their football?
But the main reason we were outclassed is the difference in midfield. Greening and Koren ran the show, dictated the pace of the game, slowed it when necessary, spread the ball superbly with link up play to their quality strikers when necessary. This fundamental concept "continues" to be ignored by Wolves management and it has been over the years, in the same way Tottenham ignore it in the prem.
The only ray of light is that next year WBA will be in a different league again, and we dont have to suffer the usual "humiliation derby day."
But will MM (if still in post) recognise this frailty or will he buy more strikers?

The only difference being it'll possibly be Walsall who'll humiliate us instead. :(

Another seasons experience behind them and with a couple of good additions to the squad and Wolves will be there.

Exactly Essex. Why people can't see the bigger picture I'll never know.
West Brom have good quality players coming from their time in the Premier League.
McCarthy had to start from scratch and in just under two years has built an exciting, young team who have over-achieved. Despite the money spent, it has been spent on potential and is not the same thing as when we have spent millions before trying to get out of this league.

And lets not forget PW Wolves started the game with at least 2 players missing that would normally have been there from the KO, Kightly and Henry. Not an excuse for the defeat but these two, for me, make a big difference.
Add the return of Edwards and a couple of quality signings and things will improve I feel sure.

We need to ensure we have the right blend of potential and experience in the signings we make if we're going to sustain a challenge for automatic next year (assuming we don't go up via the play-offs). Potential alone will never be enough.
The lack of experience really showed last night. Gibson played like a rabbit caught in the headlights last night, as did Collins, Keogh and even our new cult hero Elokobi.
The boggies have the blend just right. In defense they have Barnett with Clement, in midfield Greening with Koren, up front Phillips and Miller.
However I don't think we were completely outclassed last night as some are trying to lead us to believe - they were just that little bit better and this was largely due to the experience factor IMO.

Yes another couple of additions to replace the ones we sell to the prem and another season to bed them in.Repeat scenario to the season of your choice............

Fair comment fickle but if, yes a big if I know, Wolves can keep hold of their better players and add improvement to the squad then things will look up.
Should some of the better players leave then the money raised will just have to be reinvested.
Personally I believe and hope that the likes of Hennessey, Kightly, SEB and Jarvis stay and having only signed recently I see no reason why not.

Again agree Essex. I'm sure we wont lose any of our best players over the summer. However if one asks to leave or we get a very realistic fee for him then its upto McCarthy to re-invest this money and find another gem ready to make the step up. McCarthy has also shown his ability in the transfer market to find top young players.

With that side they will be humiliated next season, so no I don't aspire.
Our midfield let us down badly, but with a better a midfield and Kightly in the side there would have been a better result.
Defensively they are not very good.
I thought in my humble opinion the result did not reflect the game.

It's all ifs at the moment because we are still in with a shout but if we are in the same division next season will we have the same manager? If we don't then who says the new manager will not want his own players and not Mcarthys?
It's a discussion for another day i suppose.

Surely the new Manager (if we have one) will be given the same directive from above that MM's been given. Build on what we have on Young & Hungry.

Agree with most Reans. Albion play through their central midfield and a complete footballing ethos with every player technically gifted with great movement from the whole team to create two or three different options when they have the ball. We base our team on two wingers taking on their man and getting the crosses in. Without Kightly our approach is totally flawed. Albion have four midfielders (no wide men of such) that interchange can hold the ball up and play at the tempo that they direct. They taught us a lesson last night but I wouldn't advocate changing our approach too much. As Reans has pointed out berfore we need that Greening type player in the middle to direct our play and if Potter and Gibson arn't up to it then they need to be replaced. Dave Edwards is an engine, not a footballer and he epitimises the differene between what Mowbray and McCarthy look for in a midfielder.

We are clearly still a work in progress, as most can see. Clearly Koren and Greening are better than Olo and Gibson, that is no great surprise, there is a reason the CM partnership has been a matter for debate all season. That said KH, when we need someone to put a tackle in rather than distribute the ball, rightly doesn't seem in dispute as a class act despite the fact I think he, like a number of others, has not had his best season. Personally I think it might be a belssing in disguise if a prem team comes in for Olo, I feel he is too inconsistent, not creative enough and does not have a goal threat (how many 25 yarders do we score?). Edwards has the potential to be better if he can add a bit more craft to his game but worse case scenario is a great squad player. Bringing in Brian Howard from Barnsley or Surman would cost alot and we might face prem competition for their signature. I would like to think maybe Davies and Bennett can provide some home grown solutions to add a bit of class in the final third.
As the Collin trial and rumours linking us with other young CBs show we are clearly looking to bring one or more in there. It is hard though to identify the right player and that is why it takes time (its a huge credit to Mick and his team that we are as good in the transfer market as we have been). I think Mick and his team have identified the problem areas we can all see and will hopefully bring in the answers this summer. Its just obvious solutions like Ledley, Surman, Joe Mattock, Nugent etc. cost money that Morgan might not be able to sanction and that depends if we can even persuade them to come to us.
If we don't go up this year I still think Mick can do it next although I still have some concerns regarding style of play (we can look great) and whether he can adapt tactically (he does show some openess to trying new things). Still nothing wrong with keeping an eye on Fergie jr.

I support my club. I just dont think, nor have I ever, that MM is the right man for the job. He isn't tactically aware as he showed last night AGAIN, and although he has done well to bail us out of the $$$$ we were in and he has also made some good signings, he is at his limit and should go.
He would make an excellent director of football for someone...
And I would say someone with 3000+ posts is more attention seeking than someone with 58 posts... ;)

Actually I think a Director of Football is just what we need. Not sure who exactly but I think Mick needs someone to "bounce ideas off". Not Terry Connor though as he doesn't appear up to the job.

Dont DOF's just look after scouting and signing players? Or do they get involved in selection/tactics too?
I guess it would vary from club to club...

Sell the dead wood, our squad is too big. Look at WBA's, big enough with quality cover in every position. Central defence the only exception.

We we surrendered our 11 point lead when WBA first got promoted we surrendered a lot more as well. We will never match Albion as long as they keep on dipping their toes in the Premiership well.
We can get to the promised land, but I view MM as an Iain Duncan Smith, Brian Ashton or a Steve Maclaren. Willing and honest but not really the real deal. I was hoping we could go on that run and we may well make it to the pomised land but this does not feel altogether right.
I said at the start of this season that Wolves would be an automatic contender and we have never looked like that. I said MK Dons would walk Divison two and they did. How did I get it so badly wrong. Ince has kep his formation pretty consistent throughout, MM playing Stephen Ward on the left wing was plain daft and not utilising Freddy was another big mistake.
The run in should be interesting but I fear if MM does not make the play-offs it would be seen as failure and he will be sent packing. I almost heard that in his voice last night, I am sure he knows he is losng his job with every point lost or dropped.
Albion have been a class act for some time and we have to get promoted and be seen to be serious about staying there his time.
