View Full Version : Is it the manager?

Glen Hoddle is currently coming in for a lot of criticism, only a week ago, for many,he was the best manager/coach we had seen at the Molineux in living memory. Prior to this Dave Jones was hounded out after gaining promotion and being considered a reasonable manager who had succeeded in keeping the Saints in the Premiership. Then we have Mark McGhee, an up and coming manager widely touted to be the next Man U boss before managing at the stadium of doom (Molineux). not to mention Graham Taylor another ex England manager who got Watford promotedimmediately after leaving the Wolves.

Are they all c**p managers or is there some other more fundamental problem that needs addressing? I have my own thoughts but would welcome the views of others.

Rhos,

are you Essex Wolf's mate that phoned him up with a conspiracy theory?

Take a look at any of the football clubs that are striving to be the next big club and they are all the same. They all hire and fire managers at an alarming rate and some of them are top managers. We are no exception, there are several clubs that have been through several managers in a shorter space of time than us recently.

ID - No I did not phone up Essex with a conspiracy theory, its a shame you wish to descend to such immature comment, presumably you are happy with the current state of affairs.

As a fan of over 40 years standing who has invested a major part of my life and income in supporting the club and in the process seen some great players and times at the Wolves I raised what I consider to be an important issue. Throughout the sixties and seventies Wolves were predominantly atop league side that found little difficulty in gaining promotion on the unfortunate occasions they were relegated.

More recently we have struggled despite significant investment, far more than our rivals, and despite having employed high profile managers and signed high profile players. Currently, once again, debate rages about the qualities of the manager and the systems he chooses to play, not to mention major criticism of some high cost signings.I merely raised the question of whether theremay be more fundamental problems at the club, no mention of conspiracy - but hey why let fact get in the way of a good reply. smileys/smiley5.gifEdited by: Rhoswolf

Rhos,

Get yourself up to Hillsborough or Elland Road, they are grounds with a larger capacity than ours and smaller crowds than ours. They are also the homes of two teams that have both hired and fired many high profile managers.

We are not unique.

People are fickle and football fans are amongst the most fickle of people. We have had greatness in the past, I know because I was there for a small part of it.

To quote the great Robbie Williams (who doesn't seem so popular any more), "The past has gone, we've been betrayed".

If continuing support through the good and the bad for more years than I care to remember and continuing to make a round trip of over 200 miles to every home game and more to themajority of away games makes me fickle, then I plead guilty. How about you HGW?

If mileage and costs makes you more of a supporter than me then I bow down. I take it that we both want the same outcome for Wolves, that being progesssion and whatever ultimate goal we strive for. The difference between you and me is that I do not live on the expectation that the club can just steamroller a sporting contest. By it's very nature the championship is going to have its ups and downs. More downs if you lot carry on whinging.

BTW I reckon my round trip to a home game is 140 miles so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

I bumped into Jo Lescott, yesterday, he recommended some knee capping experts, so beware.

HGW - where do I state I expect us to steamroller a sporting contest, by all means re-interpret what is said to make a point but try keeping within the realms of reason. The point I was trying to make is that in my opinion, and the opinion of many others, Wolves have constantly underperformed for longer than I care to remember. Now you may not agree that is your prerogative but try discussing the point raised not one that suits your argument.

No mileage and costs do not make me a better supporter, again you miss the point, these coments were specifically in response to the accusation of being "fickle". I have refrained from entering into the debate about whether match attendees are better supporters than infrequent attenders, however, I do take exception at being accused by supporters who,by their own admission, do not attend on a regular basis.

They are all c**p managers, with the exception of Dave Jones who is the most successful Wolves manager in 20 years. Mark McGhee hasn't set the world alight at Millwall or Brighton. Graham Taylor had one great season at Watford followed by the lowest points total ever in the Premiership, then disaster at Villa.
