View Full Version : More Of The Same

I have just had a quick read through some of the Sundays and in one I
found Hoddle saying that the fans can expect a lot more games like that.
I have some news for Mr Hoddle, if we have a season full of that sort
of football he will be looking for another job and Wolves will be
trying to work out how they are going to survive on gates of 10,000.
I have watched a number of games on TV this season (as well as watching
Wolves live) and I have to say we are not alone in producing this
boring, negative and unattractive football and my belief is that the now
ubiquitous 4-5-1 will be the death knell and English football as we
know it. If you get two teams playing this way then you may as well
fetch the goal posts down.
I have already made the decision that if Blackburn, Bolton or Everton
are playing in a live TV game then I will give it a miss. Am I being
too negative or do other supporters have similar feelings about the
game in England at the moment.

its true, i havent seen one single exciting game this season either live or on tv. with the exception of the scummy hammers beating the scummy villa, and even then i missed the 1st 3 goals
Wulfhere,
I was going to post a thread on the very same subject, great minds think alike and fools seldom differ.
The game that we watched yesterday seems to be getting to be the norm, with 2 teams playing a dull 4-5-1. Even watching the current greatest exponents of the formation is a dull affair, was Liverpool against Man Utd. exciting? Even Chelsea can be very dull at times!
The trouble is caused by the money in the game, everyone wants to play safe and not lose loads of money. It started with the Champion's League and has now filtered it's way down through the also rans in the Premier League to The Championship.

Yep I think fear is the key and it is killing the game. No wonder
Leicesters gates are down. Who would want to watch that every week. On
of the Sundays described Wolves and Leicester as two of the mosy boring
teams in history.<!--

Wulfhere,
I think that they were wrong to tar us with the same brush as Leicester, we are only boring when faced with a defensive version of our own formation. Since the object of the game is to win points at all costs, nobody in their right mind will play open football and let us take them apart (Holloway was not in his right mind).
The reason that this formation works for Chelsea and sometimes for Man Utd. is that they have the best players in the world playing for them, we sadly don't.

Mourinho has allready said that he doesnt care about exciting football as long as he gets results and its comments like that that really worry me. Considering at the moment how much people pay to watch these games to see such dross really makes you wonder whether you should bother.
Now yesterday i think was more them playing 10 man back and us not being able to deal with it than us playing purposely boring football and while its all fine and dandy Hoddle realising how that many games will be like this i can only hope is has plan B up his sleeve the next time some low rank dross hole decides to come to the Molineux with a point.

Perhaps but the stats concerning drawn games make look very similar in
fact almost identical. Having said that I agree that Leicester were
particularly negative and the real disappointment is that we just carry
on playing the same way even when the system we are playing has been
negated and is not working. We appear to be in the same sort of
dogmatic mind set as when DJ was here.
We needed to get the ball forward a lot quicker yesterday and provide
closer support to Cort but we don't appear to be able to make any
adjustment to our style of play. <!--

I thought that Mourinho's comments were a disgrace and Levein also made
similar comments after yesterdays match. It will kill the game. Of
cause at todays prices supporters have every right to be entertained.
These people are in the entertainment business and they should realise
that.

I have stated on a number of threads that 4-5-1 is a defensive formation, I was attacked for starting a thread saying just that before the England games.
It should be pointed out we do in fact play 4-3-3 with 3 strikers, so do Man U, but against teams that play 4-5-1 forced us to play the same, like today Liverpools 4-5-1 forced Man U to play the same, result only a couple of real goal scoring chances, boring.
The fact the Prem have recorded the lowest number of goals scored for August for over 10 years, is disgusting, considering the Talent in that league, trouble is because of TV money teams are more worried about relegation then winning games.
I do not blame us for that yesterday, the booing from the Leic fans, told me that they did not approve either, but I do expect Hoddle to come up with a answer or like you, I will not bother to come and watch.
The FA should change it so no points are given for a scoreless draw.

When there's so, so much money and ultimately their own job and career
depending on results and results alone I find it hard to see how we can
blame the managers.
The solution needs to be found higher up IMO.

It is hard to equate the open fluent passing football we played against QPR with the dross we have served up since...

Simple QPR came to beat us at football, but lost, Millwall and Leic, came to frustrate, foul and do everything but play football in order not to lose, at least against Leicester our defense, thanks to Edwards was much stronger.
Hoddle knows what players have to do to beat teams that sit back and frustrate, but have we the players to do it.

I don't think we have.
In order to open up a side that are playing for a draw and keeping ten men behind the ball you need thequality of players that play in the prem. The only way we would have got in behind Leicester/Millwall is if they made a mistake (ie Corts goal v Millwall he dropped of his marker and got a free header). If the other team don't make a mistake we are not going to score.
The current system of 4-5-1 is just not suited to the players that we have currently at our disposal. Clarke cannot play wide left, I almost cry when I see Cort drift out wide right!!! We need him in the middle getting on the end of crosses, not putting them in!!!
The midfield just does not have enough in the legs to drive forward to create the opportunities when we play this formation. Look at Saturday against Leicester for example. Where was the driving runsgoing to come from in a midfieldwith Kennedy and Cameron?? Cameron legs seem to have deserted him and he most definately does not seem capable of making the kind of runsfrom midfieldcompared to when he firstsigned for us.With Ricketts absent Ijust could not see where this kind of support was going to come from??
well we are not alone, been reading a Liecester site, debating whether they would prefer the 4-3 defeat of two seasons ago or Saturdays 0 v 0, very divided.
Also Owen feels 4-5-1 is killing things as well

I go to football to be entertained, if its just about results, I will buy a paper
This formation clearly isn't working, we're not mobile or good enough
to use it. If Dave Jones had served up that dross on Saturday he would
have been shot at dawn.
Oh, and on the subject of Jones, if Cardiff win their game in hand they go above us.

Sorry can't agree. Theside trying toplay for the draw have to keep that up an awful long time andthe onus is one us to do something about it! IMO you need quality players tokeep out a teamfor 90 mins!
I honestlycould not see us doing the same I'm sorry to say! Edited by: 7X

Fair points - I definitely agree with the poster who said we need a fresh pair of legs in midfield. From what I have seen of Ricketts - I really think he is the answer. I am convinced that if he got the chance to have a 10 match [even 5] run of starting his erratic form would diminish and we would end up with a fine player. I have said on here before that I have a similar belief in the case of Rob Edwards. His considerably improved form has been put down to his recent change of position - but I think it is more to do with starting most games and gaining confidence and settling into the team.
It wasn`t that long ago that any player signed would always get at least half a dozen games under their belt before any judgement would be made. Plenty of successful players started off pretty ropey until it started to click...
We have IMO opinion signed too many players in the last few years who have never has a cjhance of that sort of run.
Ricketts is too good at his best and far too pacey not to be given that chance. We need him now! He has to be a better bet than Colin surely?

Going back to the original gist of the thread I fully agree.
Of all the games I've seen to date only the QPR game is one where I can say Wolves deserved the win and the game was enjoyable to watch.
Yeah, I read this and my heart sank.
It seems without Ince we are always b*ggered.

Agree with the sentiments posted, particularly with regard to Leicester's negativity. However, interestedto note that on the statistics quoted for the game Leicester had 8 attempts on goal whilst we had 9, yet these statistics have been used to argue how we have dominated games in the past. i think it demonstrates how reliance on statistics alone does not give a truereflection of the game.

Fair points about Ricketts, he is a young man who has not played much
football over the last two years and should improve with games. He has
shown a bit at times but not consistently enough yet. I also feel
pretty confortable about Edwards playing in the middle he is doing a
good job defensively but I think he could improve his distribution.
I missed the QPR game, I was away on holiday (typical) but did manage
to view it on TV. We really dominated the game but QPR looked a really
poor team on the night.
