Ipswich are not as tough an opponent as the Albion and Kighty may be back.

Please let Kightly be back because he's 100% fit and NOT just as a last desperate measure to try and salvage something from the season.

Indeed - we still have to proceed with caution here. The last thing we need is Kightly out for 6 months+ which effects the start of the next campaign.

Yeah it was a long un mate, but it was a decent game and as you say, the crowd were magnificent. Its got to be the same for the remaining home games now - every one a cup final. Simple as.
Oh, and good shout again Essex,...I'm starting to wonder if someone's stolen your log-in ;):D

Our support was superb... again.
This is not a criticism, just an observation (which I have long held).
I'm not convinced it was superb. Superb support never stops singing - we do. Superb support sings more songs in support of the team than it does songs against the opposition - we don't.
It never ceases to amaze me that when goals go in against us or the play goes against us we find it difficult to keep up a barrage of noise. There were times last night when we fell silent or we struggled to get people singing. Why can we never keep a song going for more than a minute or so? It always peters out meaning that we have a lull before another one starts.
I stood there, in the South Bank, last night thinking that other clubs do the "constant noise" thing much better than us. Why do we find it so difficult?

For one - Southampton, November 6th 2007 (and other games since).
For another - I think Albion do it better than us (generally).
Obviously, Portsmouth.
It doesn't really matter who it is, the point I'm trying to make is - if some can do it, why can't/don't we do it (or, at least, do it regularly)?
Like I said, it's not so much a criticism more of a query ...

I thought the atmosphere last night was better than any of the last three games at the Hawthorns where it has been deadly silent on each occasion after the initial opening 10 minutes.
Southampton have been mixed on the 3 times I've been to St Mary's.

In terms of no stop support at home the only team to do that is Pompey and that has only really been in recent years.
To suggest Albion are better is rediculous. For the past three games at their place (including the play-offs) their support has been muted at best.
Away from home they've been $$$$e as well, including last night when the celebrations were nowhere near as mad as it would have been if the story had been reversed. Admittedly, it could be that beating us so often has taken away some of the passion.

I rarely hear any crowd sing constantly during games anymore. All Seater stadia and the general sanitising of football has put pay to that.
If you think ...clap clap "Blue Army" = a good atmosphere then I appologise.
75000 at Old Trafford are often quieter than us.

Perhaps I should clarify what I mean by "constant noise". I don't necessarily mean 90 minutes like Pompey but a sustained period of singing or chanting that lasts longer than 1 or 2 minutes. At So'ton they sang "When the Saints" for approx 15 minutes in the second half. We rarely, if ever, do anything like that and I'm not sure why. It sounds great and must give the players a lift. It's not difficult to do but we still don't do it ... the chants fade and die really quickly.
All seater stadia? Maybe, but even last night we couldn't sustain a chant for more than a couple of minutes.

It's bloody hard to do when you're a lone voice in a sea of Apathy. As I stated earlier I started chanting "Come on Wanderers" as soon as the Albion players raced off to celebrate in front of their Inbreds but most around me were just staring at the floor in total disbelief. One or two tried the same but we were fighting a losing battle.
I've always been of the opinion that it's when you concede that you need to get behind the team not just when you're "on top" as it were.
Btw I was stood up the whole game (as were most around me) The Stewards didn't bother to tell us to sit down as they knew we wouldn't.

I think sometimes you forget how lucky you lot are to attend games like last night, I thoroughly enjoyed the years I had my season ticket, even when we lost (Well nearly always!)
When you can longer go and have to listen on the radio and hear the crowd and even picture it all in your mind then maybe you'll realise what ya missing.
So FFS sing yer heart out for the lads for the rest of the season!!!

Yes, everyone around me in the North Bank were all stood up too - and I could see fair numbers in the South Bank doing it too. For once, the Stewards didn't even blink!
I think the idea of attacking the South Bank in the second half is a good one.
I've said this for years that most goals are scored in the second half and we should attack the most vocal end. I cannot think of any other club that does not attack their most vocal end in the second half.
Also while I'm on one change the goal nets to make them look more inviting. It's just basic psychology but it might be the reason we miss so many pens and have scored the least amount of goals in the top half again.

The shape of them needs changing to make the goal look bigger like Wembley.

The support was superb - Pompey, Albion and Saints all play in grounds that are far better for atmosphere than Molineux (with its wide open spaces). As much as anything I dream of an atmospheric joined up ground that is tight knit - this makes atmosphere contagious. We have the least atmospheric ground in the country IMO (3 rows of advertisement hoardings between touchline and stand). It just guts you when they score because you know they are a better team anyway. But the support overall from our fans was fantastic last night. And it would be awesome in the right type of ground. Worth an extra goal in local derbies.

Sorry do not agree with this at all.
Our support last night was excellant. I was stood all match in the South Bank and we sang for most of the 90 minutes except for a few minutes after the goal when again we started off the Mol to lift the lads.
Albion by contrast were quiet until they scored and were only clased as noisy right at the end
Southampton NO NO NO I was at the Southampton match we out sung them all night they were a disgrace the only song they knew was 'When the Saints, whilst we even taught them some new songs, sung Pompey songs as well as our usual repotoire

Yes it's allowed most teams have different styles of goal posts and nets. The posts have to be a certain width but the style of nets and the way the they are held to the post can be any teams choice. Just have a quick look at the weekends goals and watch out for all the different types nets and goals. ( I know it sounds geeky but I do get paid to do it).
I don't want to bore you all with the whole science and psychology of our studies but players that we have tested do prefer different types of goals and nets. It's also the same with surroundings, some players just love playing on certain grounds and pitches and always score.

... and there's the rub. Sometimes if you're in the loud part (or an area where lots of you are singing often) you miss out the wider experience which can sometimes be less overwhelming.
Anyway - HSV's thread has kind of taken this theme on it's own separate journey ...

Let us make it loud on Saturday!! Now what did you want singing for the full 90 minutes.... I will try and oblige but I lost my voice on Tuesday at about 80 minutes gone. Still lets make it a fortress
