Now it looks like Beckham is about to get his 100th Cap how many think that it's warranted that he should be held in the same Esteem as past Legends like our own Billy Wright, Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton. Bearing in mind Billy and the two Bobby's caps included very few "Friendly" caps can Beckham be truly ranked alongside these Greats?
Peter Shilton is of course the only other Centurion as it were and Record Holder with 126.

He can be, he should be, but he won't be. Probably until he's dead.
Thoroughly deserved IMO..
The only one out of the current crop who cares like the fans do and always makes his priority to join up with the England squad when selected.. Part of the reason he fell out with Ferguson at United was becasue of his patriotism to play for his country.. It's not entirely his fault he ended up in LA as he was given the impression that both his club and International careers were over..
Had Beckham played in every qualifer then we would be off to the euros in the summer instead of Trinidad and Tobago.. His influence was particularly missed in Tel Aviv, Zagreb and the H game against Macedonia.. which is where qualification was lost.
Even though he isnt currently in a great league, he will never lose his ability to deliver a set piece or cross a ball.. as was proved in his cameo appearance in the Croatia game.. the only threat we had in that game was after the introduction of Beckham.
Also believe that we would have gone on to beat Portugal in 06 ( even after Rooney dropped us in it) had Beckham not had to go off with an injury..and then who knows where the summer of 06 would have ended.
Will be an honour to be present when he reaches his landmark tomorrow.. Really hope he sets it off with a goal as well.

No. Massively overhyped. As the years pass his contribution will be judged more objectively I think. A no-show in every major tournament England have played in.
Totally deserved. He has probably been the best English player of his generation, like Gazza was in his. He fully justifies his 100th cap imo, good luck to him.
Templeton - Totally untrue. Pen against Argentina?

He'll come on in the second half, milk the applause, and then after the match he'll be off to retirement in the USA, with his tiresome Wife.

One of the few he didn't miss. One kick doesn't make up for his poor performances in that tournament not least the bottled 'tackle' that led to Brazils equaliser.

Beckham deserves it. He may not be a true "great" in the mould of Moore or Wright but he has contributed to England in a big way and was missed when McClaren ditched him to prove a point.
If Beckham wasn't good enough why did he win so many trophies at Man Utd?
He only left because Ferguson didnt like his celebrity status which, along with Victoria, clouds the opinion on many football fans.

?? Scored or made the assist for EVERY goal in Germany 2006
I think it's wrong to compare him to Moore, Wright etc, but he is truly one of the games modern legends.
Read somewhere that in every one of his professional contracts he's had it written that he is to be made available for ALL England games if he's called up. Maybe another one of the reasons why Fergie fell out with him.
It would have been so easy for him to bow out when he was being made to train on his own at Madrid, or to shove 2 fingers up to McClown when he came back grovelling, but credit to him, he was the main reason Madrid won the league last season, and he showed the passion that was missing from the other England players when he returned. Had he been in the squad (not neccessarily played) throughout the Euro qualifiers, then I'm sure we would have been looking forward to the summer this year.

Against the giants Paraguay, Ecuador and Trinidad? Beckham's performances in that tournament were poor but he was by no means on his own as we know. The best we played was against Portugal when he and Rooney went off.

Although all it needed was a big boot from Paul Scholes to rectify that situation. I don't think you can blame Beckham for wanting to play for England when still not fit, you should blame the manager for that.
I've been critical of Beckham in his later England career when for me he's wanted to play more centrally and been less effective and made England less effective (N Ireland game particularly). Having said that over his entire England career I don't think we've had a MORE effective player than him particularly in goal creation where we often seem to struggle. Shame his best days weren't at the same time as Shearer's. He'll deserve his 100th cap.

Putting his own ambition before the team? You can blame him for that. Sven constantly picked players on reputation and style over substance but thankfully it seems those days are over under Capello.
I don't doubt his creativity and the fact he was one of our more effective players but this says more about England than Beckham I think. My point is simply that when it really mattered he was found wanting - not the mark of a great player.

he was certainly found wanting v greece at old trafford:rolleyes:, he's the best weve had for years, a better manager would have had him in the qualifiers and we wouldnt be the laughing stock of europe.

Beckham has always been very good in great teams...hence manu etc. Put him on an equal playing field his shortcomings are quickly highlighted and he looks distinctly average.
having said that he has done well for us over a long period of time, but dont think he desreves the adulation of many. Mind you simple people appeal to simpletons.

I think Temp is trying a wind up, he's doing the old 'what have the Romans ever done for us' argument, and when you actually point out that they have in fact done loads, he will then list said achievements and add, but apart from that etc etc. A poor an ill thought through comment by Temp, I have watched England live many times, home and away, and DB has more often than not been the star player.

Well deserved, he's fit enough, experienced enough and still the best crosser of a ball we have. Could still go to South Africa

I think Capello is simply getting the Beckham 100 caps thing out the way so he doesn't have to pick him again or feel under pressure to because of the press headline interest.

And quite rightly too.
I like what I'm hearing about the "impact sub" thing beckham spoke about today. Who wouldnt want him coming on in the dying minutes of an important game when ideas have run out?
I`m not that big a fan of beckham, but he has an obvious passion and drive to play football which i dont think is that obvious in a lot of other top players. He also takes a lot of pride in playing for england.

A home qualifier against a B list (at a push) international side. He was great in that game no question. Now tell me how you think he did in these games:-
Columbia, Argentina 98WC
Sweden, Argentina, Nigeria, Denmark, Brazil 2002WC
France, Croatia, Switzerland, Portugal 2004EC
Paraguay, Trinidad, Sweden, Ecuador, Portugal 2006WC
I suggest that of those 16 games he has been effective in 5, cost us 2 and anonymous in the other 9. Our better performers in these tournaments have been Campbell, Butt, Lampard, Rooney, both Coles and Hargreaves.
I have never suggested that he isn't a good player merely that his performances dont merit the level of celebrity and status he enjoys.

I actually think it's a pretty valid move to see if he can still perform for England at the top so to speak.
100 may be his last but I think it's merited. The best consistent deliverer of a ball the game has ever seen anywhere at anytime.

Thoroughly deserved, and as proved tonight still one of our best and proudest performers.
Let history judge him as one of our 'modern' greats. I think with all he has had to deal with he deserves it!

Do you know anything about football.....
Watch the Brazil game...
He mos certainly did not bottle the tackle.
There was 30 secons left if that. The ball was running out, Roberto Carlos slid in, Beckham thinking Carlos would play it out, allowing England to run down the clock and go in 1 - 0 at half time. He hurdled Carlos, unfortunately Carlos wrapped his foot round the ball and kept it in play. The rest is history
Totally deserved, Becks is a great player and still looked the best passer of the ball on the pitch tonight...

Hmmm yes thousands do and did watch that game and yes he did bottle that tackle.
Sorry fact of life I'm afraid...the old metatarcil (sp) was playing up so I suppose that lets him off, now was it playing up when he back heeled an Argie?

Suggest you watch it again. He clearly played for the throw.
Simeone has on many occassions said he dived and feigned injury to get Beckham sent off.
I suggest you join the Sweaties and watch them
