Of course we'll pay. Taxpayers money will have to be used to build up Londons transport network, the CTRL etc and the stadiums. Any profits made from operating costs won't come out of London. Not sure it's worth the cost to laugh at Chirac, esp. now he'll be wanting to get us back.

If you think London taxpayer can raise enough money to foot the cost of improving transport facilities including outside of the capital ,then IMo you are mistaken. The rates may have gone up to help fund it but no way will it cover it all.

More likely the fact that FIFA have a policy of rotating the WC amongst
the continents. After Germany 2006, it probably wont come to Europe
again until 2018....

Deutsch Wolf
06-07-2005, 15:06
Absolutely. Mind you, 2006 in Germany will show some cracking grounds - Allianz Arena in Munich, Olympiastadion in Berlin, AOL Arena in Hamburg, Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, and AufArena Schalke to name a few.

Never mind Old Trafford, if you count Twickenham (which is going
through a revamp soon), and both White Hart Lane (if things go to plan)
and Stamford Bridge (if Chelsea are still there) which will probably be
50,000+ stadiums by then, possibly Upton Park as well. Add to it other
decent grounds like The Den, Selhurst Park and Craven Cottage (also
possibly Brentfords new ground), then its fair to say that by 2012
London will probably be the best city in the world for sports
stadiums.

I don't know:

Uruguay, Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, England, Mexico, W Germany, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Italy, USA, France, Japan/Korea, Germany, S Africa. Europe normally gets every other World Cup, so 2014 should be in Europe. I think it's because UEFA has the most member nations, and because it provides the biggest television revenues (which inevitably diminish to an extent when it's played in a completely different time zone).

It wouldnt surprise me to see the WC go to somewhere in the AMericas and somewhere in Asia for both of 2010 and 2014.

FIFA have been making a big thing about development. Wouldnt surprise
me to see China in the running.....1 billion people, and convenient TV
timings for the whole asian market. SImilar arguments apply to an
americas WC.

Plus there has been lots of talk of an African nation getting it. I guess SA would be the front runners in that case....

The only obvious example of a country having the olympics and WC close
together is South Korea - Olympics 1988 and WC2002(shared with Japan)

(I'm ignoring the US(O1984 and WC1994), as its such a big country).

STill 14 years though.....so the UK having the WC in 2018 wouldnt be too farfetched....

Lets face it, 2018 will surely be in Europe.

Germany will have had a crack, as will have France, Italy and Spain,
all since the UK last hosted it. Perhaps Greece will use the hosting of
the Olympics as a plus point, but I'd still be hopeful that we could
get it.

Back to the topic though, I suppose congrats are due to all involved. Can't stand the bloody thing myself, athletics bores me to tears, and didn't really want it.

On the positive side, it should be great for the economy (although London will be pretty much the sole beneficiary), and it is always great to put one over on the filthy old enemy. So just for that, I'm quite amused by the result.

COSTS:

£1.5billion to run the Games.

New venues will cost £560million, including £250million on a new Olympic Stadium at Stratford, east London.

£650million for the athletes' village.

£200million on security - less than half the amount spent by Athens.

The Government will spend £800million redeveloping the Lower Lea Valley - this is not included in the Olympic budget.

Around
£7billion spent on improving London's infrastructure such as the
Channel Tunnel Rail Link and extension of the East London line.

INCOME

A special Olympic Lottery competition will provide £1.5billion.

International Olympic Committee TV and marketing deals will bring in £560million.

Sponsorship and official suppliers - £450million.

Ticket revenues will be £300million.

£60million will be earned through licensing.

The London Development Agency are putting in £250million.

Up to £625million will come from the council tax increase of £20 per year per London household.

Basically, if you don't live in London and don't buy a special olympic
lottery ticket (the normal lottery will continue as is) you aren't
paying a penny. Enjoy gloating at Chirac, I am I'm just $$$$$ed that
it's costing me a score to do so smileys/smiley7.gif Value for money though.

Ok........

Selhurst Park.....Once you get with 2 miles of the ground it takes 30 minutes to get there, opnce you do it is a $$$$$$$ing hole. I have been on a tour and also in the "directors box" many times with work - it is unbelievably c***. I think I am being extremely kind to it too.

Craven Cottage..... Just because it old does not make it a good ground! Another hole, but with a listed building as part of the "stadium".

The New Den.......I haven't been there but my mate is a season ticket holder and cannot drink in some of the pubs nearby as at least 3 generations of your family need to be recognised before you are allowed in on matchdays smileys/smiley2.gifand its very location is enough to relegate it to s***hole status.
