Thought I'd get it started before Golden Oldie does...
Fingers crossed that Warne doesn't manage to out-psych our batsmen, I'd be more than happy if the match petered out into a boring draw at about five o'clock this evening.

Morning PW. Rain would be ideal, but I can't see it happening. Ideally, Vaughan and Banger need to bat through to lunch, that would make me a very happy chappy.

Who would have thought that on the very last day of this series we would starting the day with bat in hand and the chance to win the Ashes. We need to bat until tea and have wickets in hand. 2 very long and very stressful sessions ahead, if we get through them then its party time and get the bus filled with petrol.............

The Australian's can't swing a cricket ball to any great effect. No where near the standard of our boys anyway.
Warne will be on from the start I reckon, he's there only chance of victory in this game.
Bat until mid-afternoon and we'll be alright. And if we lose, so be it.
At least the Aussies found a bit of humour yesterday, coming out from the light delay in sunglasses smileys/smiley32.gif

To be honest, nothing would have thrilled me more than to have batted the Aussies off the park. But in the context of this game, and it's context within the series, then boring is fine. It's analagous to the hypothetical situation whereby Wolves need to avoid defeat away at Chelseaon the last day of the season to win the Premiership. Yes, open flowing football would be superb, but a boring nil-nil would be just as good...

Aggressive, controlledand clever cricket is now England's way. Yesterday's utilisation of the elements was marvellous. They never cease to surprise us now.
A great day is in prospect, and who wins will have deserved it. And if it's a draw, then Australia can't argue as a day lost to rain which meant we ran out of time in the 3rd test.Edited by: Stan Cutlass

A wonderfull series. probably the finest ever between two test sides.
The sportsmanship and mutual respect between the two sets of players
has been a credit to all of them. One thing is sure. Even if it is a
draw (most likely result IMHO though it would be wonderfull to rack up
some runs and bowl em out again) it certainly won't be boring! I am
sure every one of us will be kept enthalled all day.
England all out for 150 and Australia in on a run chase. With the way the whole series has gone I can't imagine it petering out with england batting to 200-250 and leaving the Aussies an hour to get it. It will end in drama I'm convinced of it.

England batting through to at least tea should produce the draw.
But I wouldn't take that for granted - the whole outcome depends on how McGrath and (more probably) Warne bowl.

England wont win this match!!!
They need to focus on batting for as long as they can. If they can bat for 50-60 overs, with a steady run ratethey will be home. However, you just know that there will be twists and turns on the way.
If we only post 150, we'll be in serious trouble!
One huge last effort is needed!

Only on British TV - he can't work for Sky as he's signed up to Kerry Packer's Channel 9 in Australia. If you happen to watch the convicts play and lose to some other countries later in the year, you'll still hear the great man.
So who's for the chop from the Aussies line-up then?
I reckon Martyn, Katich, and even Gilchrist are on very thin ice. Hayden's just about redeemed himself with his performance yesterday. I'll save comment on Glenn '5-0' McGrath until later.Edited by: Deutsch Wolf

Agree - Martyn and Katich. Clarke has done ok but not pushed on much. Gilchrist has been found wanting as a batsman and wicket keeper. I think Glenn will retire from international cricket rather than be axed. He started the series on fire. That spell in our first innings was awesome, since then he has had 2 injuries and hasn't looked the same (cue Glenn getting 5 wickets before lunch today). Ricky Ponting is also at risk.......even if they draw and retain the ashes. He has made some poor decisions this series. Gillespe will neverbowl an international test again.
Wivey Wolf

Gilchrist and Hayden are safe - they need their experience to bring Clarke, Katich etc on.

Not sure - I thought he couldn't work for Sky as Murdoch and Packer are competing broadcasters in Australia. I've definitely heard him commentating on the Aussies games on Sky, when they just take the feed from Channel 9 (but obscure their logo!).
hayden only saved himself by the skin of his teeth.
I think if they don't win Hayden could be in trouble. His innings was all about himself and posting a decent score. He knew the weather forcast yet steadily took his time rather than take risks and that could cost them yet.

Losing one wicket early in itself wouldn't be a problem, except we open up Bell and Pietersen (newbies) who each have had 3 indifferent tests.
In this tension, would they be up to the job?
Relying on Flintoff to bat 4 hours after is bowling exploits wouldn't be too clever either.
So much depends on these two.

The ball's still very new though, so they'll get maximum seam movement by putting the quicks on from the off (in theory, at least). Once the new ball has lost some of its shine, it's easier for a spinner to grip the ball, and because the seam's less prominent, it turns more.

That must be correct cause warne is class and will get wickets, and as the aussies cannot afford to let the ball go a bit, he should have been on and not just today, in my view if he had of bowled from the start in all tests we would not be winning 2-1.

If we made the FA Cup Final this season, and a load of people from Wolverhampton who weren't Wolves fans got tickets because "Wolves am good, ay they?", and you didn't, would you say, "Ah well, can't see the harm in it"?

See your point but i think there i a big difference between a club team and people playing for their country and its because its an England side that people are taking interest, and anyway if England were playing this well but no one was taking interest then people would be moaning about how all of Englands efforts are being ignored so i personally think its good that people are taking aninterest albeit for a short time.

Stolen from the Test Match Special website - but worth repeating.......
we are 132 in front with 5 wickets left, with aprrox 70 overs to go. If we bat for another 25 overs at 4 an over = 100 + 132 = 232, the Aussies will have 232 to get in aprox 45 overs at just over 5 an over, no matter what you say its a big ask. And Vaughan is hardly going to rush round the pitch, he will slow things down so probably 40 overs, it gets tougher for the Aussies all the time.

Tough one. Sounds obvious, but the two current incumbents of the crease, and Duckhams Jones have massive roles to play. Another 120 runs, off around 40 overs and we're home and dry. Otherwise, it's squeaky bum time. I'm still quite confident though - well, as confident as you can be as an Englishman at this time. I'll probably still be a bit iffy if we set them 200 off 20 overs!

I agree, last year when we played West Indies i asked people if they'd watched the test and their response would be the usual "Cricket's boring, cant stand it" but now they are all life long cricket fans. I've no problem with kids getting interested in the sport because of this summer but it's the people who thought it was $$$$$ prior to the ashes and are now on the bandwagon that i cant stand.

Good call! It was only until about 10 minutes from the end that I felt relaxed! If Tait & McGrath are in, needing 72 off the last 2 overs, I'll be ok.

Another 6 from Pietersen!!
Another six from KP, followed by a 4, and another 4. Great stuff!Edited by: Sparky

But this was Sheff Utd, they did have Peskydildo on the bench, and then came that penalty award...

98 overs today.
Less 2 for the change of innings (unless it happens at tea?)
Leaves 96
26 overs bowled this morning
Leaves 70
Australia to bowl another 26 before tea (unless England are all out)
Leaves 44
44 @ 5 an over = 220, meaning England need another 87 by tea at roughly 3.5 an over
44 @ 6 an over = 264, meaning England need another 131 by tea at roughly 5 an over

DW not really the best photo of KP I have seen but at this moment he looks superb. Commentators saying he cannot last like this with KP playing the way he his.
If he can get to the ton then he will break the Aussie hearts
Lee's last delivery at 95.3mph, who will break the 100mph barrier?

Dare we risk giving them a sniff at any score. I would like us to bat the day out. With KP on 200 or more and Collingwood on about 10

We'll win this test easily ;)
Double hundred by tea for KP, then bowl the aussies out after tea.
Maybe.
