View Full Version : Blow for Kightly

Michael Kightly is out of tomorrow's game with Palace (KO 3pm, click here (http://www.wolves.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307%7E1212147,00.html) for ticket news). The winger limped off the training field yesterday morning.
Michael made an impressive return to action as a substitute against Cambridge last Saturday - scoring one goal and setting up another. But the ankle injury that had kept him out of the team for six weeks has not cleared up and he was forced to bring his session at Compton to an abrupt end.
Boss Mick McCarthy (http://www.wolves.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307%7E1212171,00.html#) said: "Kights felt his ankle yesterday and won't be involved tomorrow.
"It's one of those injuries where rest is the best cure. "But that frustrates Michael. Telling someone who is naturally full of bounce and vigour to do nothing is difficult.
"We all felt for him yesterday. He was very upset."
Sylvain Ebanks-Blake's signing has been completed. More on this shortly.

Is that a response to the fact Kightly is injured or the fact we're going to be graced with Stephen Ward's presence once again?

If we weren't so appalling on Saturday we wouldn't have needed him to keep us in the FA Cup, and he may have been fully recovered by now. Big blow.

that Kightly is out again. We might find he needs a few more weeks rest rather than a few days, its often the case when someone breaks down in training.
Now SEB has signed I'd play him upfront with Freddy, Keogh right wing and Jarvis left. S.Ward on the bench

Are you sitting down?? Spot on mate!! :D
Thick Mick needed to save his job though & the only way he was going to do that was by putting Kightly on. There was no way he was ready for a full half in a blood & thunder cup tie.

It's worrying when your 50% fit (if that) winger saves your team against Cambridge United and gets man of the match.

My window cleaner's nanny was in the pub talking to this three year old who told her that his fiancee's brother was in touch with zoo keeper who had told him that one of the giraffe's had overheard Jez's cleaner telling her priest that the real reason that Kightly is not playing is that honest Mick is selling him and does not want him injured. The eventual plan is to draft Neil Collins into the right wing position.
You heard it here first.

having now recovered from the fact that when i first read the opening post and thought it said "brought his season to an abrupt end", I have given this some thought and I believe we will see Jarvis and Ward on the wings with Keogh and one from Bothroyd and Eastwood up front. Gibson and Henry in the middle. New boys on the bench. Can't see it being anything other than that.

Mick said in the match report for the Naaaarwich away game that Keogh had a chest infection/cold and wasn't feeling well.
"However, Andy Keogh (http://www.wolves.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307%7E1201798,00.html#) looked to be back to his best. He needed that goal.
"He didn't train yesterday because he has been struggling with a cold. But I asked him to give me 70 minutes."

Agreed. My guess is that he probably should not have even been on the bench and it was the last roll of the dice by Super Mick to try to keep his job as he surely would have gone if we had lost to Cambridge. Thanks Mick......

This just points up yet again our ridiculous over-dependence on Kightly. We are crying out not just for an established and dynamic left winger but proper cover for Kightly. Gobern it seems is permanently injured and the very least MM should do is get a loannee in. Lee Martin would have been ideal but now gone to Sheff U.
Prediction: tomorrow we will struggle again to score unless SEB shows he is the business. However without proper supply what can he or anyone do up front? 0-0 or 1-1 here we go again or perhaps 0-1 as Palce are playing well now.
MM still has plenty to do to hold on to his job. He must quickly get our resources on the wings sorted out and I trust the new Edwards is not asked to become a stand- in winger rather than a dynamic central midfielder. Another £2.2m spent and yet you still feel the squad is full of holes quality- wise and number-wise in certain positions.
ProudWolf
11-01-2008, 12:08
If Davies or Gobern were ever fit they'd provide adequate cover but as they are injured it'll have to be Jarvis or Keogh for me. Surely he wont go back to Gibson or Potter on the right.
Desperately need a quality left-winger but I understand it might take time to get a teams' best player (Ledley, Hoolahan, Commons, etc.)

Funny that isn't it. I wonder if Captain Morgan is aware of that. Morgan is taking a big gamble on backing McCarthy because if this does not work out he has shown his hand as rivalling SJH for imcompetence.

Looks like we're paying a pretty high price for disposing of the mighty Cambridge and keeping MM in a job for another few weeks. Yesterday's optimism didn't last too long.
First visit tomorrow since Colchester at home and hoping for a much improved performance, prayer mat at the ready!
Very bad news indeed. Kightly said himself he wasn't going to be ready for three weeks so we just need to be patient.
If we start the game without any wingers then Imo nothing will have changed. We're not going to look a threat until we have width.
So no Kightly until February now? Brilliant.

With the plethora of central midfielders at our disposal, perhaps a change in formation would be a good plan?
------------Hennessey-------------
Foley----Ward------Collins-----Gray
-------------Henry-----------------
-----Gibson--------Edwards/Potter--
-------------Keogh-----------------
---Eastwood/SEB----Bothroyd-------
Jarvis could also play the Keogh role in this formation and so could Eastwood imo.
The best we have to offer at present his S.Ward on the left. We have nobody else to play there. Hopefully Jarvis will get a start on the right.
As I said before the new signings aren't going to rectify our main problem.
While Kightly is injured we're stuck with S.Ward and potter on the wings.

not gonna happen. mick will stay with 4-4-2.
gibson is crap on the right, are you seriously suggesting we play potter on the left? and keogh wont play just behind the strikers. i'm fairly sure the starting line up will be
hennessey
foley ward collins gray
jarvis henry gibson s.ward
keogh bothroyd

It would be left and right central midfield roles for those two, not the same 'wing' roles that they have both been asked to play before.
Obviously, Mick won't play this formation. He has said before that he changed formation once in his career when he was manager of Ireland. It didn't work, so he'll never do it again. His words, not mine.
Surely the formation should depend upon the players that you have available.
Above is a diamond formation by the way, it's what teams use when they want to play narrower.

Kites being out for a few weeks is likely to be the final nail in McCarthy's coffin. Even with the new signings it is hard to see us making the play offs without Kites playing regularly.

we known for weeks if not months about our left side weaknesses, our cover for the right side is always injured, yet over £2m has been spent on 2 areas where we have plenty of options, is MM taking the $$$$ or does he have another 3 players lined up? left back, left mid, right mid cover!!
rushing a player back and getting injured is not ideal is it, although it wasnt done in the cambridge game i still feel he has been rushed back to save MM's face and job. desparation id say.

how about the evidence that he is now out for the best part of a month? You mean to say Kightly got better again for 45 mins and then suddenly got worse again for no apparent reason?
McCarthy knows how much the fans rate Kightly. He also knows that Kightly playing = us winning. Problem is, I don't think McCarthy really knows WHY this is the case.
"He's a good lad who likes putting a shift in" is prob why Mick thinks that Kites playing makes us successful.
