There is a story that Gary Speed is all set to join the Blades in the Transfer Window (on loan).

I don't know how true it might be (I haven't read it all) but if so, he might be in their line up to play us.

A good signing? Or, an over the hill has been? Someone we should be interested in for a short period?

I think so.

Already signed for them. Would have been a very good signing IMO.

He'll score against us, old as he is!

What makes it worse he will out run our midfield

Sad news - as I posted in another thread he would have been just the Rae type of inspiration the team would have benefitted from. I truly hope that Mick has realised what sort of player[s] we need to bump-start our faltering promotion hopes and that they will not be found in either Sunderland or from the Emerald Isles...

Yeah he might be getting on but he'll be able to a fantastic job in this league.
He's a player who really takes care of himself hence why he's still such a good player.

If you compare Henry against Speed it's quite laughable.

I'm glad he is off to Sheffield.

Likewise LW but just hope he doesn't score against Wolves should he play, sods law and all that.

We need wingers not central midfielders.

Stewarton - As much as I share your views on the ineptitude of our Manager I am disappointed that you appear to believe that only a STH is entitled to hold any cogent views on the club. This is obviously a nonsense. All it requires is intelligence and a knowledge of football which sometimes can be augmented by a long-term love of the club concerned - but as any of the most respected of our leading football pundits would confirm is not an essential prerequisite...

Essex and LeedsWolf - I am surprised that you do not believe that a quality inspirational player such as Speed would not be an obvious asset to the team. Of course he is past his best - if he wasn`t then he would never consider coming to the championship - but if we are to achieve promotion then we have to buy some quality come January...

I don't believe that Speed is a quality inspirational midfielder.

Problem is Leedswolf neither are Potter, Henry and Olofinjana. Speed would have been a big improvement on the above make no mistake.

I also find it worrying that we don't appear to be looking for a central midfielder. Neither of the above are good enough and more worringly MM was quoted in the E&S tonight as saying we have cover in central midfield with Potter, Henry and Gibson.
What about Mark Davies McCarthy who is better than all of the above!

LW-I realise that my friend - but I still remain surprised - purely because Speed is so widely respected for his quality and inspirational prowess. No doubt you believe the Pope to be an atheist?

Where has this come from...

I have not even posted on this thread...

And I don't think I have ever made such a comment, being as I was along distance fan.

Why have you ever taken it before a match?

I don't believe that Speed is a quality inspirational midfielder.
You are probably right to a degree, however he has experience by the bucketload, and an almost certain ability to put his foot on the ball and control the tempo of the game. We don't have that, there is nobody in the team that can calm things, we lost that when Jackie left.

Speed could save Robson's job.....or he might end up taking over.Think about it! Maybe that's why we didn't go for him?

AND WHY INDEED...

Pardon?

Stewarton, I've never really considered Speed as the sort of midfielder that puts his foot on the ball and dictates the pace of the game, but more of an up and down 100% dedicated professional footballer.

I think he could in this division...

Also another that one day will make a top manager.. Would definately be worth having on our books..
He will sign for Sheff Utd and once they get rid of Robson will take over the managers role..

Well past his sell by date especially in a team of inferior quality. A predictable last throw of the dice for Robson. Outside bet of Crystal Palace for promotion.

As a young player breaking into the Leeds team, he wouldn't have the experience he has now.

Gary Speed is by some distance better than any midfielder we have and would have been a very good short term asset.
