They've just said on Sky Sports 1 that Rennie hasn't reffed a premiership match as he has failed the fitness test yet they also said in the same sentence that he has reffed in the championship...
Why in gods name are we classed as second class supporters just because we don't support a bloody premiership team, that has wound me up so much.

Rennie aside though, why is it fair that he can ref us yet he is not fit enough for the premiership, the pitches are the same size and the games are the same length, it's just not fair.

I watched the game today, Rennie did not cause the red. If you watch the ref, he actually said, It's a red in to his mike.
I think he was warning Rennie to expect trouble.
I thught the ref was one of the worst I have seen.

There's no answer I can think of, it doesn't make sense

I've been thinking the same for a long time. If a ref isn't good enough for the premier$$$$ then surely he's not good enough for the championship

I watched it, and to me the ref was 9 feet away. Did not seem too concerned until he got a message from the line, then he gave the red.

Because they are 'professional' refs in the Prem aren't they ?. They are not allowed outside employment but I think in all other divisions you can.
Fitness/competence I expect are all graded.
Prem refs 'earn' £1400 per game incl their retainer + expenses since they were required to make it their sole income - can you imagine if the FA had to pay that level throughout the leagues ! Barwick would have to take a cut from his £4.6m a week for doing ....er.....badly !

Championship players are slower and sillier.

Are you sure they are earning that much? Some are covering 3 games per week!

Good luck to them if they are. They really are in a position whereby they can't win today and they are no better or worse than in years gone by.
Considering some of the antics in the Prem. week in, week out, I think we are fortunate that these guys want to bother with refereeing. We all knock them but they are generally pretty good.
I didn't agree with the Keane or the Nelsen (Blackburn) sendings off this week but generally I think the standard of refereeing is pretty good in the Prem.
As for Rennie, he's an enigma....he started off very well. He was well respected and he did a good job. Did he then start to believe he was that good?

This season according to a figures from Brimingham County Referee's association more Refs have failed the fitness tests at the higher level this season than they have for a long time. On the lower tiers Div 1 and 2 at least 10 are running the line who have not passed the test. Moving down the tiers there are many more who cannot pass the basic level

He was tremendous to begin with, also friendly and easy to talk to off the pitch. For me the change came when stricter guidelines came in about how the refs had to deal with various situations. It seemed to take personal discretion and common sense away from some, and Rennie became a much poorer referee for it. Maybe he did also start to believe his own publicity too.
Much as some players fail to reach their potential, I think in Rennie the game has somehow missed a potentially outstanding referee.

I'm afraid so BS only its MORE - I did write that from memory but a bit of googling tells me they are on a 'retainer' of £50k and a payment of around £900 per game (one site did say £600) - that equals roughly £84200 (which works out at £1600 per game!!) PLUS expenses !.
Nice work if you can get it

I have been fourth official to Urriah Rennie twice Once when he was on the way up ,when he was gracious and welcoming. The second time was during his first year on the premier League when he had changed beyond all recognition. It was certainly speak when you were spoken to. I would also put Jeff Winter, Graham Poll and Neil Barry in this category. It was them first, second and third. Refs like Alan Wiley, Dermot Gallacher and Peter Walton were far more' human'
The problem with modern day Premier League refs is that generally their assessments are 'written' before the game. The assessors are so in cohorts with the refs it is embarressing to hear what is said before the game . I know I am going back a while but far and away the best referee during my generation was Roger Milford. He reffed with passion, knew the game, respected players and they respected him. He reffed with a smile on his face as opposed to the robots of today who ref to the book . They may know the laws but many don't know the game.

I`ve tried googling but couldn`t find a list of assessors, but isn`t Kenny Hibbett an assessor?

Kenny has some role but it is not as a proper assessor, more of a match observer, whatever that may be. When I heard him on Sky he said he did it in the Football League not the Premier League but this may have changed.
