Nugents goals carried Preston last season. Stick Nugent in a bottom 6 team they'd be in the play off spots come Christmas.

I disagree, he started well last season, but since around the time we beat them (February, 1-0, great day :D) they went totally down hill! They finished very badly and missed out on the play offs after being in pole-position, and they're not doing well now either.
Knew it was coming.

It's normally about this time of the season when the panic sets in and stupid decisions get made. I think Paul Simpson has proven a very capable and articulate manager who will come back even better. As the other man said he overachieved, had a decent striker and wasn't given time or the finance to rebuild.

I recall on "Big League Weekend" last night on Sky Sports 1 he said he'd never leave Preston and would only go if he was sacked. Shame really.

Shame he has gone really as seemed a decent bloke but results are the be all and end all and clearly PNE's were not good enough this season.
Nugent kept PNE in the hunt and once he left the team seemed to fall apart. Strange how one player can make such a difference.

To many Knee jerk reactions
I saw on the Big Weekend that McCarthy was number 10 or 11 in the list of longest serving managers. That is ridiculous.
Only 12 had served longer than one full season.

Nugent didnt even score over 15 goals in the league last season IIRC
