View Full Version : when hoddle signed...

there were deep discussions about the transfer budget...and this affected, and led to him signing his contract.
now i start to wonder...what was the point? now personally, im not fussed about us not signing anyone as i believe we have the squad to take us into the top 2, but it just makes me wonder what did glenn agree, and who were these players that he actually had identified and put 7 figure bids in for. it seems that one was rasiak...but who are the others? and why has nothing come to the fore-front about it.
it was obvious glenn wanted to strengthen the squad...but do you think he has done it to what he wants? i dont...
he wanted idiakez, but didnt get him, but in my view, signed a equally good player in anderton. he wanted a striker, and didnt get one. does this mean he is going to make do??
do you think glenn is happy with what he has got?
Probably not, but then we will never know.
I wonder who Jackie Mac was told we were going to sign. He went very public with the fact that our transfer targets were inspirational to him and were largely what pursuaded him to come to the club. Hope he is not too dissillusioned, but then he knows the game and understands the difficulties of the transfer markes, so will probably understand - unlike many posters here!!!

id forgot about jackie...
he did say he was very excited about our targets...we all were, its just annoying that we dont know who they are!

i heard jackie was signing on the understanding that anderton followed. job done

i didnt think anderton was the target that hoddle wanted.
who would you have been more excited about joining?? idiakez or anderton??
personally, id have gone for anderton
Over the years watching Sky, BBC sports etc, when ever they discuss managers and squads etc, they also ways joke about manager always wanting to sign 1 or 2 more players and there is a lot of truth in that, even if the board had spent milions and signed the entire England squad, I am sure Hoddle like any manager would have said we just need one or two players for cover/Icing on the cake.
Perhaps what Hoddle meant by transfer budget wasnt the obvious transfer
fees, but the wages. During the Premier Season all the talk was about
not paying stupid wages, and none of Ricketts, McNamara or Anderton
will be here on the cheap, so possibly that could have meant the
raising of any wage barrier to attract players who wouldnt otherwise
come?

i dont think they would have been on that high of wages, especially not anderton really.
the main attraction for them all was playing for glenn and what he was going to bring to the club. jackie was being messed around by celtic, and ricketts was always going to be released.
i dont think it was the money that atrracted them, it was glenns aims
That would certainly have been a factor, but I still cant see them
being here for anything under 20k. Didnt McNamara mention that we were
offering the same wages as Celtic? If true, then even with how they
treated him at the end, he would presumably have been one of their top
earners.

Well Hoddle knows he has to cope with the current squad until at least January so he is hardly likely to publicly state we need more players to sustain a promotion challenge - it would be a PR disaster as far as the players are concerned & wouldn't really give them much confidence.
I would expect us to be up there but another player or two (replacement/ back-up for Ince being in mine & most peoples opinion the biggest priority) would have really allowed us to push on and take this league by the scruff of the neck.
It is a little worrying that we were'nt able to sign anyone as we certainly have the money available (didn't spend all the parachute money last year, £4.5M in from Camara loan & sale as well as this years parachute).
I think if we do have a bad run between now & January & fall behind the leaders we will be entitled to ask where the money has gone.
Though hopefully on the other hand we'll have luck with injuries, be able to last the pace & bolster the squad in Jan. It is also refreshing that Hoddle seems to be holding out for proper quality & not just splashing the money round on any old $$$$$$ (remember Rob Taylor & Ketsbaia)

i dont think jackie will be on anything close to 20k....thats way over our transfer structure??

Think you are right, In one interview it was quoted to be paid £15,000 and was only getting what he was being paid at Celtic, Still that id more then most Championship players would expect

i dont think he will be on 15 to be honest...celtic probably offered him less cus he is now older...thats what usually happens. id say 13/14k i would think. thats roughky the region of our highest earners.
i dont think hoddle would have broke the wage structure to prevent him signing who he wanted. example of this is rasiak would have probably signed....

Jackie Mac was on 12k per week at Celtic, Anderton I would assume is on around 15k per week, Ricketts is a youngster I would be very surprised to see on anything over 6-7k per week.

i disagree peckham
id say ricketts would be on 10+
anderton 10k ish

Don't forget signing on fees, which in the case of high profile free transferscan be pretty big.

In a week we can get loan players in. May be they will be comingon loan with a view to buying in the jan transfer window. Do you think this is likley?

There is no way Ricketts is on 10 k plus is there?
He couldn't have been too high an earner at Spurs - i would say 6 or 7 k is a more likely figure.
When the chips are down we signed3 good players for nothing (Postma and Gypses I've not seen enough of to make an informed judgement), that really can't be sniffed at.
When you sign players a transfer fee (if any) is only one part of the financial outlay - the full cost of signinga player includes agents fees, signing on fees, wages and possibly loan fees. So its for say Harry Rednapp to sign free transfers at Porstmouth and claim he hasn't spent a penny when in fact he has.
We have signed 5 players over the summer, 2 of whom are full internationals, so understandably Glenda is not too upset.

Whilst things go fairly well, IE Wolves up near the top end, then GH will most likely be happy? and okay with the squad he has. However if in a couple of monhs time injuries have caused us problems and Wolves are not where GH wants them to be he will rightly have he ache about the squad not being as stong as he would like.
We all know that GH wanted to sign more players and I don't believe Rasiack was one of his original targets so all in all GH may well have wanted up to three new players?
Now come the next transfer window, by which time GH will know very well what he needs, if the club again fail to sign anyone we could see a very unhappy GH.

I think January will be a good time to add a couple of additions to the squad
that will give a boost to the club for the run in to the season. It's always
going to be a bit of a gamble wether to spend money earlier or just keep
what we've got and still hope for promotion.
If there is no strenghtening in January I will be disappointed unless we are
running away with the league - which I can't really see happening.

skinnyrobtaylor, if Wolves were running away with the title then signing a couple of new faces just for that final push would be very shrewd IMV.

All we need is some luck with injuries, and we'll be just fine. The QPR game re-affirmed my positivity in how much a class above we can look at times. Additionally, we've just got to make sure we don't take our foot off the pedal and become complacent. The team has to perform like that on a regular basis now. Ok sometimes it may not pay off, but the effort has to be there at least. Forexample, IMVthe improvement we made to the last couple of games was that the forwards produced even better movement off the ball which created much more space. If Cort has now been enlightened on this, then he could easily be on 20+goals bythe season's end.

I tend to agee with you SW but it is the fact you, I and a few others relate to having to rely on luck re injurieshighlights that some of us would have liked to have seen a couple of new players just to give us that extra little strength in depth and security.

Its also a lot easier to pursuade players to sign for us when we're running away with the title and looking a sure bet for Premiership football next season. Most decent players want to play in the Premiership, those that aren't as bothered are normally more concerned about money than success and we've had a fair few of them down the years.

Thoroughly agree Essex. I'm not saying I'm pleased that we didn't sign anyone. If I ran the club I'd have shed blood sweat and tears to bring in a CH, CM & possibly a LB. However I'm just giving the current team & management credit where it's due for the start they've made.
In my life I never leave things to lady luck as you shouldstrive as much as possible tocontrolyour own destiny. I just hope she's on our side this season.Edited by: Sozzled Wolf

i didnt think anderton was the target that hoddle wanted.
Hoddle said he was on his original list of players. I assume if that's
true then he couldn't get him in until recently when Blues got in
Jarosik on top of Pennant being there too.
Perhaps Idiakez was one of his secondary targets all along.
