They're going mad up there. 9 mill on a goalie 7 mill on that other dude the other week.

Making a proper effort to survive it seems. Using the Sky money straight away?

Not saying we should have gone mad like that but......

Indeed.....a real indicator of how the Perm is El Dorado and becoming increasingly an elite club.

I know Gordon is a good keeper but £9m?

The Gordon signing takes their total up towards £27m now, with Keane promising more arrivals shortly.

The club are certainly backing the manager much more than when MM was last in the Prem with them, when I think he was given little over £4m.

Still think they'll struggle, a lot depends on whether Chopra gets them enough goals. I've got my doubts to be honest.

Spent alot of money but, Gordon aside, has bought no decent quality in.

Might be able to mould them into a decent unit but I think they'll struggle because of their lack of quality.

Agreed. Makes you wonder who Keane would have signed had he got the £4.99 budget that McCarthy had when they went up last time.

IMO the signing of Craig Gordon will keep them in this division if he stay's fit and plays in a large percentage of there games.

the reason why unless we get up this season then the premiership is a closed shop...

teams who have never spent cash are spending silly amounts and it will only get worse before the end of the window and in the january window..

even with the money spent any team that comes down has got a squad that would be very competitive in the championship, and any players they would have to sell they would get silly money for as Charlton have done

I have to say, I think you're right and this is a big cause for concern.

The problem is that West Ham, Man City, Sunderland etc are throwing money around buying players and all this is doing is escalating prices.

Have any of those clubs got value for money? I'd say not, all this injection of money is doing is making average players expensive and outstanding players completely untouchable for all but three of four clubs in the Premiership.

I struggle to think about how we'll even compete if promoted but that is a worry that we don't have to think about for the time being. We need to get there first and at least we have abit of clout in this division.

i agree. the way teams have spent money this summer has become ridiculous. i just wonder where its all leading...
16mm for bent was a $$$$ take and the trend has just continued..

but at least Bent will justify his price tag by scoring goals which earn spurs money ( either in a cup competition or firing them to 4th spot and a £20m champs league jackpot)

Bent is the only big money move that will be "value for money" to an extent IMO

One of the best signings of the summer. Bent is pure class and has been scoring regularly for the last 3 seasons. In one season he was the highest English goalscorer in the premier league scoring charts.

6/7 years ago players like Chris Sutton and Kevin Davies were going for £10m and £7.5m. I dont think £16m for Bent is as overpriced as much as people are saying.

16mm for bent.

Some model railway track (or indeed some spools of film) for Bent. Looks like a bargain to me.

It does make you wonder where it will all end up. Platini was saying that he would be totally against the way English football is going if it were happening in France (although surely as a man in power at UEFA he should care about England too).

It would be nice to see a few of these clubs who have dodgy foreign owners to fall from grace when the owner decides they dont fancy it any more. I for one am quite pleased our new owner is English and seemingly a football fan and not in it for the money.

I think the only way around having to spend big when you get promoted is to have a good enough squad in the Championship to cut it in the Prem. Having players like Kightly is a step in the right direction, as would have been players like Murray and Lescott if only they'd been fit in 03/04.

dont agree that bent for £16 million can be seen as 'value for money' but thats my opinion i guess.

on the other hand, its a pretty good indication at the level in quality difference between championship and premiership. a team like sunderland who won the league (in the end) with ease is having to spend, how much did we say they're at at the mo? 30mill?, just to attempt to compete in the prem. thats pretty sad.

Not really its a team game and i think if we went up we would only need to spend half of what sunderland have so far to compete. Mainly a new back four and a striker.

Birmingham havent even spent 10m yet ( i dont think) and they look to have a good side capable of finishing above the likes of Fulham, Wigan and Derby

Not really, he's still young and has proved he can score plenty of goals in a poor team. Man U spent £17m each on 2 unproven players around the same time.

Sunderland's biggest gaffe was spending 5.5m on Kieran Richardson!!

If he had played for any other club, he wouldn't have gone for more than 2m.

Keane's signings have not been brilliant and I think Sunderland will struggle in the bottom six.

Meanwhile, if by some miracle we get promoted, I think we will need to spend at least £15m and probably more to have a chance of survival. In particular we will need a completely new defensive back four, a couple of classy new midfielders and a very good striker. That's seven players and a good premiership pedigree striker alone will be £5m plus.
