...read this for me?

http://www.wolves.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=74086

I got bored after the first paragraph.

John

Is that because the paragraphs were so $$$$ing long?
That's so badly laid out it makes your eyes hurt to look at it.
Look at the bbc website for how to do a document on the net.

to be fair Axle has written a good piece about the subject I suggested to him and the point that it makes overall is very sound.

However, trying to appear as if you have swallowed a thesaurus and using flowery sentence construction, whilst undoubtedly a good idea for a novel doesn't work on an Internet fans site. The whole idea is that these things are meant to be light, easy-to-read and easy-to-digest. Trying to push Tolstoy on the target audience is only going to provoke Woppio's reaction above.

I think some form of middle ground between his stuff and mine would be the way to go. That's what I am aiming for with next weeks article.

Looking forward to it PW!

The piece has the air or someone trying too hard. The general point the writer is aiming at is lost in metaphors, like a $$$$ in the mouth of a yawning hippo.

You will never be helped by the busy page layout. It has too much going on and is hard on the eye.
Try to get them to tone it down alot, and give you the whole page to spread your article out.

I will have a word with the people who run Vital on that. I can't control the page set up.

please do Kenny - it does look a bit odd when it all squeezes down the left. The original document paras look fine but then turn out to look odd on the screen. Anything they can do would be a help.

It is a total bag of $$$$ written by an $$$$ who thinks that he looks dead cool because he knows the link to thesaurus.com. I would rather read a thousand pages of Ulven posts than let that $$$$ing $$$$ pollute my vision another time.

I $$$$ING HATE IT.

I hope everyone on MM realises what a total $$$$ Axle is now. If that pile of turgid cack had been anywhere near an editor he would have been laughed out of the room. If he's been published my name is Gertrude..

Anybody got a fence to get this young man to sit on?

Come back Paddy - all is forgiven... almost!

Axle - lighten up the style please - I'm sure it's all good stuff, but it's bloody hard work. A damned sight harder work than Paddy's article which was described as such earlier this week...

Interesting and thought provoking read, that makes a lot of salient points. However, I agree with Paddy, that whilst it may very well be well written, but I don't think it sits particularly well in this medium. The same message could just as easily have been given in half the words, and while I may like to read books written in such a literary style, I'm not sure that I enjoy reading internet articles that are so wordy. In terms of the sentiment expressed I concur wholeheartedly, it just feels like Axle has tried too hard to prove his worthiness, which given the content he didn't need to do.

Email sent to the boss man on this. I will post his reply when I get it

To be fair he makes some good points - he just goes all the way round the Wrekin several times and back again to make it.

But then - why use four or five words when a couple of thousand will easily do ;)

As for Mystery_Poster - do we reckon it's Axel's wife

This definitely has the style of someone so far up his own $$$$ he can see the back of his teeth.

I can only assume that given his recent rant against PW Axle is lacking in common sense - why would anyone put themselves up for the ridicule he was obviously going to get. Not only that, the article deserves it whoever the author.

Good article - once you get through it - shame the message is diluted by the verbose style

I couldn't be bothered to read all that either.

Does it say if Harry Potter dies?

From Vital in answer to John and Paddy

Hi Stuart

A fair few of the 'other' forums are independent, don't advertise and therefore do have space to be widescreened.

We have tried to get the balance right and feel, compared with some other networks, we have good clean designs. eg a site I used to work on: http://www.holteenders.com (http://www.holteenders.com/) click on an article and scroll down, think you'll be surprised!

To be fair, most of the feedback we have had from members has been good. Many realise the balance that we strike between independent and commercial. Of course there will be those that don't like networks or adverts on sites and apart from adblocker, there isn't a massive amount we can do to cater for them apart from try to get quality writers and articles on.

I do feel we are better than many of the newspaper (etc) sites who have adverts in between the text of articles and who also follow the narrow format. I don't think you will find many who are able to spread to a whole page.

I can't ask for a re-design due to cost constraints. We are changing our top level portals (the main one, prem, champ etc) and also adding easier navigation on the left of all sites but apart from that, at the moment, no layout changes will happen.

Feedback will go to the coder though, just can't see major changes being made or in many ways needed when we compare well with other commercial ventures etc.

Harry Potter does die, a grisly, bloody death.....hopefully.

Mystery Poster???

surely someone who cant let his feelings out under his 'real' name.....I suggest a few weeks away from this board. Go on holiday or something and just relax. Youll feel much better. :)

I thought it was a well written article. Theres a few big words that i struggled with but the dictionary put paid to that i shall look forward to next installment.

Thanks for the update Kenny

I think I shall try for short paras in the next article and see if that looks better on the screen.

Maybe dropping in a couple of images within the script might help?

It's a bit long-winded but a very good piece!

Basically more of the same from fans next season please and don't boo the team when we lose or are "only" drawing at half-time!

Have to be careful there. Unless the pics are yours they can't be used. So you can't go to Google Images and paste one in.

Maybe the other co-ed has a few images filed away that he has rights for?

Can I ask what he means by 'Expectancy vs Expectation'?

They mean the same thing - is he trying to be a smart-$$$$ from the get go?

EasternWolf
20-07-2007, 10:34
I read a few paragraghs before the expectancy that the author would explain the dichotomy or paradox or riddle of the title faded alongside my expectation that i would not, after all, finish the article with that smug satisfaction of total understanding. Yes, all the imagery was there, reminscent of a certain football commentator/DJ, yes the subject was one that would hold us all in thrall because we are Wolves fans, but no, that nagging doubt that the title would remain a mystery sadly became an overidding drip, drip, drip that sapped my concentration. Could do well, this boy, but could do better .....
