Excluding neutral venues is the Barcelona attendance the highest ever to Watch a Wolves game?
Trawling through the records [floodlit friendly attendances excluded] Three other bumper crowds unearthed;
20-12-54 Everton v. Wolves 75,322
09-08-55 Chelsea v.wolves 75,043
European Cup Winners Cup;
29-03-61 Rangers v. Wolves 79,229

And more importantly did any of our older posters attend any of these games ? Particularly the Rangers game, especially as the return leg at Molineux was blighted by the Jocks running riot in Wolverhampton.
Would be great to hear first hand accounts?

There's a wonderful reference to the Rangers game in the ALOB book 'We Are Wolves', page 35. Penned by Tony Eagle, it doesn't sound as if the jocks were too bad. Worth a read.

Have you heard the folk song written about the Molineux? It is available from Limewire, search for 'Wolverhampton Town'.

The Rangers fans were drunken oafs all over the place - my Mom had to come home from shopping because of 'em. Animals, as the Celtic fans call 'em! They did exactly the same 10 years later at a Cup-Winners Cup final somewhere in southern Europe. They came into a Celtic club in Glasgow the week before I was there drinking with a mate of mine to trash it a few years ago. They were stopped from racist chanting in their home ground by an anti-racist Animals fan who had the guts to confront them in the 90s. They were big friends with Chelsea Headhunters in the 80s.

Celtic fans have turned up to many English grounds for friendlies and behaved themselves really well. Animals fans never get asked because they can't behave properly anywhere!

They drew at Molineux and they won on aggregate. My memory of the South Bank is being protected by my dad from bottles being thrown from the back.

In reference to Pengwern's observations, Villa played Glasgow rangers in a pre season friendly '76 '77 Rangers fans occupied the Holt End before kick off. Remember listening to a shocked reporter relaying the mayhem on beacon radio.

Wolves also played Rangers in a pre season friendly beginning of 74' or 75'. I can clearly remember some Wolves boot boys, no doubt wanting to even the score on account of the 1960 episode, laying into a lot of Rangers fans near the Railway Station.

There were allegedly 500,000 plus at Chorley in 1986 (including many people who weren't even born yet), although that figure has not been indepently verified.;)

I've got the programme for the home game still together with a lot of the others, I must find out how much they're worth and sell them to someone who would care for them. I've never had a straight answer from Dealers. :confused:

I seem to remember that the record attendance at Anfield was for a game involving us. Only early 60 thousands though.

Thank you Sir Jack

I was at that pre-season friendly. I remember the front of the South Bank scattering as the Rangers fans hurled bottles from the back. I understand that many of them came over from Corby which has a large ex-pat community.

yep - until they extended it to 75,000

our record attendance was for the replay of the Liverpool biggest attendance I think. Over 125k saw the two matches.

I was at the FAcup game against Man Utd in 1966.
I think the gate was in the region of 53,000.
I was in that enclosure for kids at the back left hand side of the North Bank.
Anyone else remember that enclosue? i think it was surrounded by wire mesh.
Terry Wharton scored two first half pens but we ended up losing 2-4.

I was at school in Wolverhampton, and we were sent home early on the tuesday because the gers were looking for effing sassanachs (sp?), we returned on the thursday morning, went to the match on the wednesday night, but dont remember much about it now, other than I was in the enclousure.

The childrens area in the North Bank was know asw the pen, when I was allowed to go to the Mol on my own that was where I first started to go, then moved in with the big men in the North Bank.

Remember a match in the 60's against Chelsea, there was a Chelsea corner from the left, and just before it was taken, Osgood started to leg it as fast as he could towards the centre circle, followed by frank Munro, never found out what happened, but can remember a couple of isolated Chelsea fans surrounded by the big Wolves men, who proceed to help them out of the North Bank in a very unceremonious fashion. Oh for the good old days again.

There is a club historian - just e-mail the club with the query and he should get back to you. I e-mailed a query last year and he rang me back within half an hour.

Blazing hot day, My old man and me. I had a Wolves kit on.

Remember the Blackburn fans throwing orange peel at the Wolves players and booing.

Remember how the Wolves victory was not well received by the press.

Wolves scored twice, one own goal and had the ball in the net another twice. Dougan played for Blackburn and was carrying an injury an they had a player carried off.
