Robson has taken over at relegated Sheffield United with an immediate return to the Premiership his aim next season.
The former Albion boss is hoping to keep his squad together and is planning talks to persuade the Blades’ star players such as Phil Jagielka to stay at Bramall Lane.
Robson believes the current Sheffield United squad will be the best in the Championship, but acknowledges fellow relegated sides Watford and Charlton will also be strong.
Then there are the sides who have narrowly missed out this time, with Wolves having been taken over this week by multi-millionaire Steve Morgan, and Southampton having another year of parachute payments.
Leicester, too, are expected to make a big push with Milan Mandaric as owner and a new manager at the helm.
“Watford and Charlton will be rebuilding,” said Robson. “Charlton have got a good structure behind them, and they will be in a decent financial position because of where they have been.
“Then there’s the situation which has developed at Wolves at the moment, so there is always good competition in the division.
“Sheffield United have got a great chance and I wouldn’t want to particularly swap my players for anyone else’s in the division. But that doesn’t guarantee you promotion.”
Finance is an ever greater factor in football and Robson admits success is impossible without a sizeable budget.
“The structure of the club does make a big difference and that’s why I like the challenge here,” he said.
“To be successful, you need a decent wage bill and a decent group of players because it’s the players who give you success.
“I just feel the structure of this football club and the squad of players are both very good and that gives me a great chance of achieving my ambitions.”
Robson is convinced he has an excellent chance of achieving his immediate ambition this season, and it’s a challenge which excites him.
“There has been a good squad put together and that gives us a really good chance,” said the former England midfielder.
“The chairman and the chief executive are very ambitious. When I’ve had clubs approach me since I left West Brom, I’ve not really had a challenge I was excited about.
“When I spoke to Sheffield United and the chairman, it did excite me and that’s why I was really pleased I’ve become manager because I feel we’ve got a real chance here.
“My ambition here can only be one thing and that’s promotion to the Premiership next season.”
