I would certainly be in favour of this happening as clubs would start taking the competition seriously again and bring a bit of the old magic back.

I would agree with a place for 1st in each domestic competition. Then at least it could still be credibly called The "Champions" League.

Wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference. There's not been an FA Cup winner outside of the 'big four' since Everton in 94/95.

How about Worthing/Carling/Coc Cola?

I'm not sure, but giving the CL place the the league cup as opposed to the FA cup would only devalue both the FA Cup and the champions league.

It would make people take the competition seriously though? And it would mean that teams like Spurs and Everton would not be close to getting a "Champions League" place for finishing 5th.
Either that or they should call it something other than "Champions".
if the fa cup winners were already qualified for the champions league, then the place should go to the runners-up.
if they were also already qualified then let it be given to the next placed team in the league.
that would liven things up a bit

Sod the Champions' League, it's irreparable.
Nobody can play Cup football anymore as they know they've got a get-out clause with the current format. Go straight back to the European Cup, allow only the Champions of each national league to qualify and play it as a straight two-legged knockout.
The rest can all go back into a reinvigorated UEFA Cup. Drop the Intertoto while we're at it. Ridiculous giving three Cup places to the "winners" of this Swiss moneyspinner.

The trouble is if it works out like the uefa cup place does currently you could end up with some tinpot club like millwall or southampton in the champions league.

Yeah exactly. Whilst the CHAMPIONS League is already devalued by 4th place teams entering, at least they have qualified by being consistent over 38 games not by winning 6 games to win the cup.

It may give the Cup a bit more of the prestige is has lost but as said by previous posters, whats the point when one of the top four wins it every year anyway?

I'd suggest that the winner of the cup plays off for the final CL place with the 4th place team. If they did this, I don't think sides like Millwall would have a cat in Hell's chance of getting to the final, anyway.

I thought I was the only one who thought like this. I don't even watch it at all, it's just more of the same

I am 100% in favour of this.
I am up for the english FA-Cup!
Finest cuptourney in the world(that is made of teams from the own country).
A great tradition, well worth preserving in the best way possible.
Winner to the Champions Leauge.
Since big four seems to win it,and many a times then that team will qualify via the PL..then the CL spot goes to the runner up.
That was...Millwall..just a couple of years ago.
We would have come fairly close in 1998.
I am all in favour of this.

Why not go the whole hog and make the champions league just that? The Champions of each country go into a proper league - and don't play in their national league the following season. Only the winners and runners up of the Champions league stay there, all other clubs drop back to their national leagues the following season to be replaced by the new champions.
The UEFA cup becomes the prime knockout tournament, for clubs finishing as runners up and maybe third in their leagues, and there is a cup winners cup as well.

Wivey, you should copyright that idea (though some bright spark, probably, already has). Great suggestion.

Agreed. The FA Cup would effectively become the "Champions League Qualifying Competition", rather than the greatest cup competition in the world.

when the fa cup was "valued" all those years ago, what was the reward? it wasnt the champions league/european cup it was the cup winners cup and the glory of being fa cup winners. its because of the champions league money that the big 4 or 5 clubs now dont put out their strongest sides in the early rounds, thats whats important to them money. as has been said nobody since everton have won it but everton were one of the big teams then so id go as far back as 88 and wimbledon, the main problem of the cup is that even when the big teams put out their 2nd string it is almost always good enough. giving it a champions league place reward will not alter the cup to the fans, oh sorry i forgot we dont matter.
perhaps something to liven it up would be one draw at the 3rd round stage, then its a case of knowing who you will play in subsequent rounds like the champions league final stages are. we could end up with 3rd div/conference teams playing each other all the way to the final. otherwise we will never see the sunderlands and southamptons win again at wemberly

But the FA Cup is valued still. Its just that after people have remortgaged their houses to pay for a season ticket, they just can't afford to go and watch their team play an FA Cup tie at 6pm on a Sunday night. I think most fans still value it though. People look at the low attendances and think its not popular any more, but I think that's not true. And the new Wembley will make it even more popular.
