Agreed, the defence situation is very strong too, Craddock and Breen could also start too, MM played it well today giving them both a game, but Neill Collins is pushing Kites to be the buy of the season...superb! Tarcisio Mifsud 11-03-2007, 14:44 Have just seen the goal on Sky news. To hear them lot you'd think we hit them with a snatch and grab but in reality it was evenly balanced for much of the game and we out fought them in the second half. They always looked a threat upfront, especially down the left with Koumas but when the going got tough he went missing. For all their danger up front Albion looked a shambles at the back but for me we won this in the middle of the park with Olofinjana and Potter looking immense. Kamara must have had about 3 one on ones with Matt Murray denying him each time. The Southbank was boing boinging again today and this time i was chuffed to bits. Murray- Quite simply brilliant. Each time they went through on goal he made himself big and made the save. Won us the game MOTM Edwards- I was very worried about how he would cope with Koumas and i suppose he did quite well. Did his usual backing off at times but wouldn't have been at right back if our captain was fit. Collins- Usual solid self. Won everything in the air. Breen- Played well again, tempted to say the rest out of the team has done him good. McNamara- Usual solid display. Kightly- Albion tried to hit him hard early on to be sure. Robinson tried to clatter him and somehow won a free kick! Wasn't as good as he was hyped but got better as the game went on. McIndoe- Tried hard but didn't see too much of the ball. Potter- Picked up where he left off against Leeds. Ran things in the middle of the pitch and was one of our better players. Olofinjana- Possibly the best he has played for us. We had the cutting edge in the centre of the pitch and despite mincing out of a few tackles he played very well. Ward- Worked tirelessly and along with Keogh gave the Albion defence a lot to think about. Keogh- Looked a danger on the break and worked hard. Bothroyd- Like at Luton, he seems to be putting in a lot more effort lately. Took his goal very well, had a good shot saved prior to that and could have won a penalty. Craddock- Covered for Breen well when he went off. Davis- Too little time. To sum up- $$$$ING YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!! ooh la la 11-03-2007, 15:23 Best Black Country derby in ages. Good to hear that about Potter because listening to it via the Internet it sounded like he was missing in the first half. Totally deserved victory. A cracking end to end game, but we shaded it in the 2nd half and totally deserved the three points. Albion didn't even play badly and that makes it all the sweeter. Kamara you diving $$$$- not so easy now ay you $$$$er! Great atmosphere from the wolves fans today- albion's support was (and not exaggeration) $$$$ing $$$$! Olofinjana was immense, Bothroyd was ace when he came on, and Murray was Englands number one again (what a save in the last minute from cheating kamara!). D'Urso tried his best to help albion win, but it didn't work. Walking past the albion fans on quick-fit car park, they were all giving the "6-1" sign- well keep clutching at straws and check out that table! DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-DEERR! http://thestudentroom.co.uk/images/smilies3/happy2.gif kizza 11-03-2007, 15:50 what a game, so much hunger and bags of desire from the lads, quality 21st birthday present!!!!! :D:D:D Phoenix 11-03-2007, 15:51 Don't get to many games because of other commitments but managed it today. First game I have seen since the likes of Kightly, Ward and Keogh signed. I may be looking at it through gold tinted glasses but here are my player scores. Murray - 9: England's Number one, didn't put a foot wrong, caught all crosses and saved us on one or two occassion. Edwards - 8: Looks a completely different player compared to when I was a regular (The Jones and Hoddle era). Very solid with some superbly timed tackles Breen/Collins - 9: I've put these together because they both dealt with almost everything, positionally excellent, strong and solid defensively and great in the air. Cant remember a Koumas through ball that actually got through. McNamara - 8: As you would probably expect quiet (in a good way), solid and efficient. Cant' remember him putting a foot wrong. McIndoe - 7/8: Probably the least effective of the attacking midfield but still worked hard and had a good game. We can have confidence that quality crosses can come from both wings and he showed a willingness to track back and make tackles, vital for a winning side. Seyi - 8: See Edwards, different man. Better second half than first and was probably most responsible for the teams lull in the second half of the second half but always willing to tackle (and with bite) and the boy can play a bit too! Effective at the top of the diamond during one of our most promising periods and seemed equally adept in amore holding role later on. Potter - 8: Got better as the game went on and saw much more of the ball in the second half. Passes strayed a little but he won the ball well, worked hard and was always willing to make a tackle. Looks like he can be a real presence in the midfield. As with Seyi, our best periods came when he was at his best. Kightley - 9: Love him, willingness to attack, have a go and even tackle and track back. Swapped wings with McIndoe a few times and has a quality end product. Keogh - 9: Never stopped running, nice touches, great at keeping the side in possession with clever play and with Ward gives the midfield options. Perhaps wanted to walk the ball in a couple of times but can be forgiven, looks like a player on the way up rather than a player who is already there. Very Very promising. Ward - 9: Again never stopped working, gave the midfield options, has talent and ability in abundance and looks very comfortable at this level already. Great work ethic and even looked comfortable on the left side of midfield. Subs Bothroyd - 8: I said to my mate that I didn't think MM should make any changes and Bothroyd promptly brought the save of the match from Keily with his first touch (Shows I know nothing). Has pace and ability and took his goal well. For some odd reason though seemed to stand 5-10 yards offside leaving Keogh in particular with fewer options. Craddock - 9: See Collins/Breen. Came on and fitted in seamlessly. first touch was to win a header and played like he had been on all game. Davis - 8: Not much time on the pitch but gets an 8 if only for a crunching tackle he made in the dying minutes to settle my nerves. Brilliant from the little man. MM - 10: Thankfully didn't listen to me and made one or two tactical changes when the game was slipping away and made them at the right times. Magician Crowd - 10: Fabulous positive atmosphere from a full house showing great support. The first half was ok, pretty good but the second was better. We deserved the win on that performance. The whole team showed a great work ethic, a desire to win and a wonderful appetite for tackles and the ugly stuff. Add to that obvious talent and promise and great movement from the front 2, I have never left Molineux so positive and happy. Any two of six teams can go up automatically and we a right up there with the best. Come on me babbies :p ooh la la 11-03-2007, 15:51 I'm still shaking..... 306NOTOUT 11-03-2007, 15:51 Were just too good for you Were just too good for you You $$$$ beauty. Potter actually! Midlander 11-03-2007, 16:14 Fantastic day........we absolutely murdered them. Couldn't have asked for more!! That has made my season!! :D :D :D :D Winelord 11-03-2007, 16:15 Great, hard-fought victory today. Took a friend who hasn't been so far this year, and he was amazed (aren't we all) at the improvement in Olofinjana. I think some poor bloke 3 rows below me in the Steve Bull Upper had a heart attack towards the end of the match. He was escorted out (with medical assistance)- hope he's OK. Bahama Wolf 11-03-2007, 16:29 Best one-liner today..."Ref was absolutely fantastic today" had to be Mick didn't it?!:D Bahama Wolf 11-03-2007, 16:33 ..Literally! It was Potter who had the armband today, but if you think about it, Breen, Craddock, Henry, Collins, Kightly, Olifinjana and Murray could all wear that armband with distincton! Heady times..! Papper 11-03-2007, 16:33 I nearly wet meself when Bothy the Baggie Basher put that one away but it was just a fantastic day of entertaining football. Praise to both teams in that respect. I saw it fairly equal but them lot slightly shading the final third. We won the midfield. Well done lads - proud of all of you. The goal celeb summed up the team ethic. Murray - (MoM) The most complete performance a Wolves goalkeeper has given since i watched them. Make no mistake the guy was so immense. I'm going to buy a Wolves Goalkeeper shirt. Unreal. Cheers Monster. Edwards - Better Centre Back, had a difficult time this afternoon but gave everything and doesnt deserve to lose his shirt, dilemma for Merlin. Breen/Collins - Cool and strong, Phillips snuffed out. Mcnamara - Mcnamara MCindoe - Best home game for a bit. Tackled hard as ever but doesnt seem like he can run like the clappers and deliver a killer ball. Weird that because he's not that slow Potter - Superb. Captains role. Olofinjana - Tackled like a beast but spent most of the second half on a Satellite delay. I still prefer Davies . George done well today though. Kightly- Danger man and marked out of the match. Keogh/Ward - Not much today but kept the Albion backline busy. Bothroyd - He was outstanding when he came on. Looked every bit as classy as Kamara and what a fantastic goal. Hero today. Competition for Ward and Keogh on that show. Nashie 11-03-2007, 16:37 Kightly- Danger man and marked out of the match. Really? Sounded to me like he was causing them problems and didn't he set Bothroyd up for his goal? Papper 11-03-2007, 16:39 $$$$IN GET IN! I was in tears at the final whistle. Six years of hurt, the last time we beat the Albion, has been put to bed. YOU BEAUTY!! Same here. Nice guy Eddie ;) Papper 11-03-2007, 16:41 Really? Sounded to me like he was causing them problems and didn't he set Bothroyd up for his goal? I thought so Nashie. Robinson played very well for them. singwolf_1 11-03-2007, 16:45 What a birthday (yesterday) present !!! Listened to it on the Internetand just watched Bothroyd's goal on SKY.... sweet sweet sweet... Lets hope we continue this rich vein of form over the next 2 months. Markwolf 11-03-2007, 16:47 Fan-bleedin-tastic! The cup game drubbing was my 1st BCD, but today has blown the memories of that away! Cracking, committed performance against a side that trumps us for ability, but lacked the desire that we had. We nullified their danger men (Kamara & Koumas) pretty well, and were worth the 3 points. Murray - Great, great game - Looked determined to make up for the previous Albion games, and was an awesome barrier, paticularly in the second half. Great saves, super handling. 9 MOM Edwards - Was worried how he'd cope with Koumas, and in the second half Kamara, but did a decent job. Was beaten on occassion, but tackled well and never gave up 7 Collins - As mentioned earlier, one of the buys of the season. Other than a stumble early on, barely put a foot wrong 8 Breen - Coped admirably with Kamara's pace, and was solid. Looked back to his best after some slightly disappointing performances when he was last in the side 8 McNamara - Solid, unfussy, Mr 7 out of 10. We do look a farbetter defensive unit with him in the side 7 Kightly - Albion had done their homework, clearly noting him as our danger man. They doubled up on him, and one disgraceful tackle from the portly Robinson had me fearing for his season. Not as effective as usual, but worked tirelessly 6 Potter- Sat very deep, but he seems to have learnt how to tackle in the last few weeks. Not given the room to ping passes about, but a pretty good game from him to help control the midfield 7 Olofinjana - Good game from him. Starting to put himself about more frequently (despite the odd gay moment), and won the ball back well time after time. Worked hard and has formed a decent understanding with Potter 8 McIndoe - Wasn't really his day. Worked hard enough, but lacks belief, and was bullied off the ball several times today. Still, played his part in the game. 6 Ward - Good holdup play, without really been a goal threat. Very good in the air, won plenty of flick ons and kept the Albions defence on its toes 7 Keogh - A class footballer, but lacks a bit of strikers nouse. This will get betterwith more games at this level. Good link up play, and a lovely finish for his disallowed 'goal'. 7 Subs - Bothroyd - When he is up for it, like today, he is terrific. Very talented, and his 1st touch was a fizzing left footer that Kiely did well to save. Lovely goal, with a great turn and finish. Showed good strength as well, but sometimes doesn't play the obvious ball. Mecurial. 8 Craddock - Slotted in for Breen very well, won his aerial battles and did well in the closing onslaught. 7 Davies - Worked hard when he came on, closing , tackling and harrying. Mick - He has been a revelation, hauling the club back to its feet after the Hoddle debacle. Drive, passion and commitment are reaping its rewards and i'm enjoying watching us so much! Over the moon! Just a quick word on d'Urso. What a $$$$. You can see why he doesn't ref in the Prem anymore. McIndoe was clearly taken out by McShane, nothing doing. And thug Robinson challenge on Kights was a disgrace, further compounded when the free kick was given against Kightly. Still, 3 points and probably just shaded the game. Chuffed.To.Bits! waveneywolf 11-03-2007, 16:53 Good to hear Potter and Olofinjana geting good reports again. I thought they were great at Ipswich, and well done MM for sticking with them. Ginger Chimp 11-03-2007, 16:57 Just back. A good first half followed by a very good second half. The atmosphere built and got better as the game went on and at the end Molineux was absolutely jumping. Matt Murray kept us in the game on several occasions and they did hit the post but overall we were the better side - we worked hard for each other and there was almost always an "out ball" to one of our forwards when the pressure was beginning to build. The thing that continues to impress me is the way every single one of these players runs their heart out for the team ... and at the end the celebrations on the pitch said it all for me. Here's a team that wants to win and knows how much it means the fans in the stadium. Seeing the players leading the "easy, easy" chants at the end in front of the South Bank was fantastic. As someone has already said the support from the Baggies followers was very poor indeed ... but then they didn't have much to cheer did they? :D quirky_birky 11-03-2007, 16:59 Great result. I thought that a point would be the best we could've hoped for - glad they proved me wrong. Great performance - Kamara could've/should've won it for them, but thankfully had a mare in front of goal (combined with a heroic performance from England's No 1). I can't criticise any of our lot. Big Matt kept us in it. Keogh was great up front - hope he finds his shooting boots though. Olo and Potter did well in midfield (Olo putting himself about a bit too  ). Jody "He used to be $$$$$e, but now he's alright :o " Craddock and the rest of the defence did well. Albion really struggled with our speedy breaks. The officials left me baffled -the Kamara handball/penalty decisions (or lack of) spring to mind. Surely either a free kick to us for handball or a pen for them. Apparently an old chap a few rows in front of me in the SB, had a heart attack when we scored. I hope he's ok. ASBO#1496 11-03-2007, 17:06 What a Game! End to end in the second half and to be honest I thought that while West Brom looked a good side our Team work and "will to win" shone through. From the huddle with Gary Breen revvin the side up to the celebrations at the end I was blissfully happy. Yes we had a few scares and Murray's saves were superb but to give him MOM would suggest we were lucky and that is one thing we were NOT. Too difficult to give a MOM today. The crowd was fantastic and the atmosphere was tremendous. At to drive back via Perry Barr after the game could not help using the car-horn to some Baggie Fans outside the Poorthawns. They looked bewildered but I knew why I was papping loud and proud:D p.s. Robinson is a Thug and it was a Coward's tackle. I wonder what Steve Bruce thought as he watched from the Directors box having lost one of his players from a Robinson elbow. The Vicar 11-03-2007, 17:16 Great result, fantastic performance overall, crowd were immense, ref was poor.. thought the first half we sat off them too much and let them play which they did. Kightly was quiet but he probably learned so much from this game. Robinson committed an awful foul on kights and got given a free-kick:eek: and about 5 minutes later i think it was greening who seemed to aim an elbow but missed (Scholes got sent off for missing last week). second half we more up and at them with Potter giving a much better account of himself. the front two were superb. Kamara caused us lots of problems but Englands No 1 combined with poor finishing let us off. the penalty incident was almost in slow motion...it was bizarre. Goal superby taken. Substitutions were made at right time and right choices. Coventry here we come. If sunderland are favourites for automatic, and we are only one point behind, it is still within reach. Mrs Vicar...where is the valium. Super Super Mick, Super Super Mick Super Super Mick Super Mick McCarthy Your father is your brother, Your sister is your mother, You're all shagging each other, Its Westbromwichalbion. Boing Boing baggies $$$$e Boing boing baggies $$$$e. Uncle Festa 11-03-2007, 17:29 Nearly had an heart attack myself before the game started. Ive tried to bottle up my emotions before the game telling myself its only a game, and then when I walked into the ground, the emotions came flooding out and the heart started going ten to a dozen. Christ, I hope we go up automatic, cuz the play offs will just about see me off. Ive come back home and I'm drained, ive kicked every ball, headed out every Albion attack, and cheered the lads till I'm horse. This team mean more to me than i'd care to admit. The work ethic and desire to wear the Old Gold makes me proud to be a Wulfrunian. Come on me babbies. Citizen Erased 11-03-2007, 17:30 i thought Olifinjana was superb in the first 25 minutes, then Albion seemed to take charge with a bit of an onslought...second half however a different show, we bossed them about and kept creating chances. il be honest however, til Bothroyd came on and nearly scored with his first touch of the ball i dont think we ever really looked like scoring...Keogh is good at holding ball up, going after the lost causes and pressuring defenders into mistakes, but as a striker i think he may have done a little more turning and facing the goal hes meant to be aiming at! Also, just after Kamara dove and got a yellow...he was clear through on goal...everyone went silent, most players seemed to stop and watch, then Edwards (i think) blatantly took him out...there was no flag from linesman suggesting offside or anything, and play just continued with ref saying play on...what the hell happened here?! Was the ref jsut punishing him for the dive that came literally 30 seconds prior to this? The Weasel 11-03-2007, 17:31 Its gonna be difficult giving any player less than 8 today, make no mistake that was a Team Performance! Was worried when heard Henry was definitely out, I had preminitions of Edwards backing off and Koumas/Kamara ripping us apart. I'll hold up my hand now and say I would have more than happily accepted a draw before kick-off (and at most times up until we scored!). Anyway here goes for the scores: Murray - won 3 clear cut one-on-ones and kept us in it when we were under the cosh, a towering display today - MotM 9 Edwards - lets give him credit, sure he aint a natural RB and I'd far prefer him next to Collins in the middle but he kept them at bay and his commitment to the cause is second to none, tackling back time and again, and punching the air repeatedly at the final whistle - 8 Collins - gave Murray a decent run for MotM, bar one slip up (which he recovered himself) this was a dominant performance from one of our buys of the season - 9 Breen - headed vertically a couple of times, but otherwise a no-nonsense Breen performance. A wise head who helped steady the ship - 7 McNamara - steady, solid, positive contribution going forward, largely untroubled by their attack - 8 Kightly - on the receiving end of very physical defending from the start, yet put himself about with vigour, must have been shattered by the time he was subbed - 8 Potter - another commanding midfield display (I struggle to beleive this is the same player from earlier in the season. Sorry Potts, I was wrong!). Great tackling, decent solid distribution, no time for anything fancy - 9 Olo - Jeez did he tackle today! Still seems to want a split second too long on the ball at times, but he's revelling in a more attack minded role - 8 McIndoe - I thought this was one of his best games for us today. Created lots, set pieces were dangerous, he took his man on a fair few times and covered every blade of grass - 8 Ward - incredible workrate, set up Bothroyd for the winner with a sublime bit of control and a deft pass. As good out left as anything we've got. What a purchase - 9 Keogh - works and works, great movement, good football-brain, things didnt quite come off for him today, but they will on another day - 8 Subs: Bothroyd - wants it! Is a quality player, scored a great goal, and very nearly had 2. Frustratingly slow to come back from offside positions leaving Keogh with limited options - 8 Craddock - there's only one Jody Craddock...... Replaced Breen who was looking jaded by then. Got stuck in immediately and was immense - 8 Davies - didnt have long but hussled well - 7 Ref - rubbish (again) Crowd - best this season Mick - a hero! Gratters 11-03-2007, 18:26 Ref was a joke (and Appu running the line wasn't much better) - only downside is Murray is certain to go with displays like that - out of this world. George had a great game - just got stuck in everywhere even winning battles others should have been fighting. Downers - Edwards needs a compass - kept going back when the right ball was forward and Keogh had a shocker - out muscled, out fought and was in the Albion pocket thoroughout the game and let it get to him - never looked interested (reminded me of Nathan Blake !). Big Uppers - Murray - nuff said, George of course and have you even seen a sub turn a game like Boothroyd - INSTANTLY turned the game single handed with the muscle we so badly needed and a superb finish. And then there was Matty - a huge, defiant, unbeatable barrier and the difference between the two teams. Everyone played their part, but special praise to: George - I'm not his greatest fan, but arguably his best display in the gold & black. Fought like a tiger for every ball. The crowd was immense, even in the Billy Wright where many stayed for some time after the final whistle. It was a great match where nothing was certain right until the end. I love the way Merlin tries to run the team from the dugout, his enthusiasm clearly ignites the team. He is a leader, his style is much more effective than that of GH or DJ who stood arms folded or leaning on the dugout looking vaguely interested throughout a match. West Brom are a very good side and this victory will give our team a very big boost although I worry that the Coventry match may be a little too soon after what must have been a draining performance for the team. Sozzled Wolf 11-03-2007, 23:03 Wow what a day. The $$$$$ fans may say "6-1" but as I said on a different thread you're only as good as your last game. 2nd half we played outstandingly (1st was a very scrappy affair and the ref didn't help by blowing his whistle every 5 seconds). Yes, they created some 1-on-1 chances towards the end but that was to be expected as we knew they'd throw everything at us when chasing the game. There's no doubting A****n's class but they've just come down from the Prem so if they weren't having a decent stab at promotion this season they should be shot (as Hoddle should have been). Can't add much more than's been posted already, but I'd give my MoM to Potter for such a determined 2nd half display. He's come on leaps and bounds and I'm glad I've been proved wrong as I really didn't think he would cut the mustard. Most others had great games too and the team effort was tremendous. To give a balanced view I'm still a little nervous with Edwards at RB (he's been brilliant at CB) - he got twisted inside out by Kamara and Koumas on several occasions today - and am also yet to be convinced by McIndoe. He just can't seem to get past his man. Overall a wonderful day to remember and the pride has now been fully restored. Chiswick_Wolf 11-03-2007, 23:03 I just hope this result doesn't get to our heads. The attitude of us supporters has been spot on so far this season - and whilst this was obviously a great win against the ol' enemy - there is no room for complacency from neither the fans nor the team. I'm sure MM will take care of the team not getting too big for their boots but I think we need to put this game aside now (as derby games are always something of an enigma) and look towards Coventry as a new type of test on Tuesday. I can't help but think that the current situation is the complete reverse of the ill fated 2001-2002 season between us and Albion. They are seemingly the side with the talent and expensive players where as we are the side of young, inexpensive battlers content to grind out games 1-0 using nothing but work ethic, teamspirit and never say die attitude. Was tightly marked but kept the ball very well and caused them problerms by dropping deep and playing some great balls through to the srtikers. Olafinjana - 8 I've never liked him and never really believed all the good things I've been hearing but he was a titan today. Potter - 7. Strong in the tackle and used the ball well. Made time for himself amid the chaos in midfield. McIndoe - 6. Little going forward but did his job tracking back. Ward - 7 Good touches and effective in the air but not really the pace and power to trouble Clement and Davies. Keogh - 7 Got better as game went on after a poor start. Should have scored. Bothroyd - 7. He's either Van Basten or Van Der Laan. Great goal and had our best effort of the game seconds after coming on. Craddock - 6 Solid. Davies - no time. Oh God now I really give up GoldenHorseshoe 12-03-2007, 19:46 Thought I'd wade in with my impressions since it was my second game this year, (Colchester was the other, and Bothroyd scored then as well). Murray - great handling, tremendous speed in getting down for the saves, it is clear however that the rest of the team are scared to death to give him a back pass, even when this is the best option, poor kicking on a number of occasions. (Subject done to death I know!). The defence was solid against two of the divisions biggest threats in Kamara and Koumas. Breen and Collins got in each others way a couple of times, but generally solid. Potter, Fantastic! put in a crunching tackle on Koumas that had him with his arms open wide winging at the ref. No foul!:D Olo great tackles, gave the ball away a few times in the first half after he had done the difficult thing, but second half, he tightened up! superb! Kightly! This guy has a real football brain, he was on the right wing first half, passed the ball to McNamara, ran inside, pointed to where he wanted the ball to be played. Didn't quite come off, but he is always in the right place. In spite of what Ive read earlier, I thought Keogh had an excellent game against a top central defender, Davis had to be on his best game to hold him. Wardy!! did you see the perfect weighted pass to Bothroyd for the goal? Reversed the pass, through the defenders right off. I've slated Bothroyd in the past, and groaned (inwardly) when he came on, but I swear, he did not put a ball wrong, ran, held the ball up, scared their defenders each time he had the ball. Took the goal exremely well, this was not a straight forward chance. Team effort, close to perfect, I don't know if anyone noticed, but in the second half, they had 3 corners in succession, where the ball came straight out, from a booming header from either Craddock or Collins, and led directly to a Wolves attack. Until the goal, they couldn't commit too many men up front, due to the fight from the Wolves team. MM on the touch line the whole match, marching up and down, I though he was going to burst his spleen when Kightly was crunched and then was penalized. Crowd fantastic, right behind the team, on the ref the instant he screwed up, shouted down the stripes, perfect. Now I wasn't a great fan of his early in the season and wasn't overly enthused when he signed permanently. Against a lesser team - Leeds - he was immense. Against A****n, struggled to make an impact in a scrappy first half, but then really took the game to them with some tenacious play.
