View Full Version : Exceeding Expectations....

No matter what happens for the rest of the season I think we can rest easy that we have a team building and the future looks very rosy. I still think we'll end up out of the play off places so I won't be too disappointed if that happens but this team already seems ahead of the game and could well be challenging for the automatic places next season if MM weaves his magic in the Summer.
Promotion this time round would still be too soon IMO but I'll take it if it happens. Just want to add; we will suffer the odd bad result between now and the end so just stay patient....MM & the boys have done a fabulous job this season.

We're only 4 points off top.

who would have expected Wolves to have 6 more points than they had this time last year. At the end of Feb 06 we had 53 points from 35matches, since this was the last match for this month and with same number of matches played Wolves have 59points and still in the running for all sorts of placings now, particularly if we can manage another away win next Saturday against Luton.
The only problem is that MM would be crowed Manager of the Month this week with 4 wins and a draw and the usual negative result normally ensue, we hope not.

I know.....but let's not build up the expectations too high. We've done well, no question and it's throughly refreshing to see.

Expectation has always been the bane of Wolverhampton Wanderers, but things have changed. We have a workman like manager, which filters throught to his players, and we win games with energy and persisitance.
I love what Mick has done, and it's never too soon to be promoted. You should always look to go up (especially now it's £30m to finish bottom!).

Don't think we should talk of promotion with 10 games to go. It can all go wrong.

11 matches to go not 10 so there are still 33 points to play for, which are not a small batch and anything can happen.
All depends on how we shall be able to deal with the other contenders when they visit Molineux - Albions, Blues, and Southampton. The we have a difficult one at Sunderland on Easter Saturday. If we can a good number of points from these 6 points matches, then anything may happen.
Expectation has always been the bane of Wolverhampton Wanderers
expectation is different to hope.. I don't think anybody in their right mind expects wolves to go up but theres nothing wrong in hoping and believing it may happen..

indeed it can as we know all too well
the difference this time around is that we are the chasers and we have a manager who has been in this position before...experience of these situations is vital.. In our promotion season the experience of the year before was vital in the run in
the molineux of old was back today.. make no mistake us as fans can make a massive difference this time around especially when no one expected us to be anywhere near this time around
IF stoke drop points on monday then its definately 3 teams out of 8.. Colchester dropped out of the race today IMO... The bubbles at Preston and Derby are bursting

The season is about the other 7 games IMO.. get as close to maximum points as possible in those 7 games and the other 4 arent as important..personally i think the saints and brum games will be more imprtant as i think albion and sunderland will be the top 2..
IF albion win their replay against Boro then there is every chance we can have 68 points before the international break with the run of games that we have in the next few weeks..
another 16 points needed IMO to be in the play offs..

You started the thread on expectations:rolleyes:
As for exceeding expections it just depends if you were prepared to lower them in the first place.

I started it in an effort to keep expectations under control after another good win. Let's just keep our feet on the ground.

Excitement, yes. Expectations, no. Thats what I think the difference is. Under Jones and Hoddle we expected Premiership football to be delivered and when it became clear it wasn't going to be then that became a problem.
This time round, I don't think that people have expected promotion at all, but everyone is now excited by the challenge ahead in the next few weeks without the demand of nothing but promotion. I think that if we made the play offs and lost in the first round, although there would obviously be disappointment having been one game from the Premiership, hopefully there would be a greater number of positives born out of the situation we have created this campaign.

Chiswick, spot on. We expect nothing but when you are 4 points off top spot why not dream. This season has been fantastic already, and if we finish 7th, i would be disappointed but not distraught. If we make the play-offs but not win it, i will be distraught but not suicidal. If we get promoted i will be escstatic but full of trepidation.
Lets just push on and see where this team of grafters, and no little talent, takes us. i have a sneaking feeling.............

Don't think we should talk of promotion with 10 games to go. It can all go wrong.
It can, but then there's no reason why it can't go right. We must be one of the form teams of the league, and if we win another game, we'll be seriously challenging for automatic promotion.
I peronally think that Sunderland are the form team of this division and a big threat to the top 2.

I don't think McCarthy is heeding your warning...
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:
"Forget about these people saying we are dark horses for promotion or coming up on the rails. "We are contenders for promotion. We are out of the play-offs on goal difference and only four points off top of the league.
"I think the players are starting to understand how intense this season is going to get."
In my experience of the past few weeks, the wolves fans I work with and in and around Molinuex on match days, nobodys expectations are detrimental to the teams performance which I think is what you're trying to 'keep under control' on this message board.
People are taking each game as it comes and are hopeful rather than expectant. In fact, the people who are expecting Wolves to do well and in some cases are worried abouth them are the Blues, Albion and Derby fans I have been talking to. For the first time ever I think, i've been playing down Wolves' chances to these supporters (citing our poor home form, the age of the squad, the crap atmosphere at home, our rubbish goal diff etc) but now it starting to look as if the excuses as to why we can do it are starting to outweigh the why we cant's...

I know what you are saying but I agree with Florida's sentiments - these kids may burn out and we have to keep with them 'if' the going gets tough.
Thats all! They are learning and loving at the same time. Just be cautiously optimistic, as in fairness most Wolves fans are.

I don't think McCarthy is heeding your warning...
I would hope he blimmin' well ignores it!
As fans we are all too used to the feeling of Wolves being close but just not good enough. We all know this squad was patched together, we all remember the situation last Summer, and we all know that just reaching the play-offs would be a brilliant achievement.
But every single player should be thinking of the top spot and bursting their lungs to get their. Anything less would not be giving it the ten-tenths. And I don't think for a second MM will be 'resting easy' with what has been achieved so far.
Feet on the ground, definitely. Support, encouragement and not criticising the team for having a stumble during the run-in, absolutely. Aiming for the automatic promotion, most definitely.

for those that werent at the game today, the celebrations by the players when the goal went in AND after the final whistle went were not those of a team looking for the playoffs, ive not seen those sort of celebrations at molineux for ages, the whole crowd applauded everyman off that field, MM shook everyones hands, these lads want it, there is no reason why they cant do it, they are determined, leeds were tough today, the next home game could be pivotal, if we can keep kamara quiet we have a chance.:)

I myself will take every game as it comes. Because i for one, did not think we would be in this position, in July last year.
So if we go up, we go up, but if we dont i didnt expect to anyway.
I peronally think that Sunderland are the form team of this division and a big threat to the top 2.
would disagree with that
albion have only lost 1 in 18..
