I thought the understanding between Ward and Keogh was fantastic, they played as a pair and worked off each others shoulders. Last time we had a REAL partnership between the strikers?

I do agree that the interplay and understanding between them was excellent. Between them they were winning practically everything in the air.

When they score 80 goals between them in a single season they'll have earnt the right for such a comparison.I think their first game together is just a little bit early.I'm not suprised though to read such tripe on this forum.

You could have stopped at the little bit early bit - but no, you had to go on to be an arsehole..................
the thread was just suppost to be a discussion on their potential and where it might lead. Obviously they haven't done enough to be compared with them, but you know, i saw enough today to suggest they could play a very important role in getting us promoted next season.

Their supplier is on his way:-

From the Stockport County website: "By this time the Blue & White Army's victory anthems were ringing around the old stadium but there was still time for one very, very special moment.

'One Stephen Gleeson, There's Only One Stephen Gleeson, began to echo out of the packed away end.

And, on the final whistle the young Irishman went straight over to the magnificent travelling fans to show his appreciation.

The 18-year-old was moved to tears by the ovation, which he later admitted, would remain with him for the rest of his life".

and Stockport's manager says:-

"Jim Gannon admitted that although he will be saddened by Stephen Gleeson's departure after Saturday's game at Hereford he's excited for the midfielder who has really matured during his three-month loan spell at Edgeley Park.

Speaking exclusively to stockportcounty.com the County chief said: "Stephen has been fantastic for us and it's been amazing the way he's grown over the last three months not just as a player but also as a person as well.

"He's got all the skills for a footballing midfielder and you don't see too many of them that are willing to get on the ball and move the ball with pace and quality.

"He can travel with the ball as well, and pick a pass off and see a pass and he's a joy to watch in training and a joy to watch matches.

"I am disappointed that he's leaving us and saddened by him going but on the other side I'm really excited for him because I think the three months has done him the world of good.

"He goes back to Wolves now to face another challenges and I wish him well in that challenge and I think if he adds the quality that he's added to us then he'll be pushing Wolves to the play-offs like he's done for us."

75 goals between them in all competitions. That was in Division 4. luiandlui was making the point about their aggregate in the CCC (Division 2). Their best aggregate for all competions in this division is 39.

That was my original argument. Not sure how I've backed away from it (apart from the Wayne Gretzky stuff, it is late !!). I do agree that its miles to early to compare Keogh and Ward to any strike partnership let alone th best we've had in many years. However, to suggest that to get that comparison a strike partnership would have to score 80 goals in a season is ridiculous as Bull and Mutch would never have achieved that at this level.

You weren't far out and you did say season but there is a difference between 2nd and 4th division. Let's see at the end of the season how well these pair do and we should have a pretty good idea of what their capable of.

Highlander - I don't think people are arguing the fact you mention on nearly 80 goals being scored by Bull and Mutch during the season in question - they are simply saying that the figure was achieved at a much easier level and therefore expecting Keogh and Ward to achieve that in the Championship is a very different proposition.

The facts are,Bull and Mutch scored over 70 goals in two consequtive seasons.I dont think any Wolves strike partnership can match that or will match it in the future. It doesn't matter if it was in division four or the Championship it was a purely amazing partnership that cannot be compared to anything since, either at Wolves or ant other league club.Put any present striking partnership in div 2 and they wouldn't score over 70 goals two sseasons running.

How many strike partnerships in League one or League two have got anywhere near Bull and Mutch's record since or before ?

For those of you rattling on that their best aggregate in the league was 39.I'll show my backside on the townhall steps if Keogh and Ward get 39 between them in the league next season.

That's a very tricky option you're suggesting there Highlander. on the one hand of course we want out 2 new strikers to score more than 39 goals, but on the other hand..............

Its a bit too soon to make comparisons but watching them pair today was a joy. I dont know what it is but they just look like 'Wolves' players. Keogh has that arrogant but strong gait about him and Ward is just a snarl, sleeves rolled up, snot and attitude. We'll see if they can play first i reckon. Early days.

It is too early to be saying we have a new bull and mutch, but the link up play awareness of each other, keogh's unselfishness for the goal, the quality of ball control by both really gave me the impression that in this pair we have more than a collection of individuals - they show the traits and patterns of play of a strike partnership that we have not seen for a very long time. I for one enjoyed it for what it was evidence that two of our players can be more than the sum of their parts (2+2=5)

Bilston_Wolf
04-02-2007, 09:51
I think they linked up well but to call them the new Bull and Mutch is a bit extreme at this early stage, hopefully they can develop though and i must admit i liked the look of them, especially Keogh.

I thought they looked a good pairing, certainly the best at the Mol for a long time. They didn't look out of place in the Championship and it has to be remembered that neither has played at this level before. Pity Big Mick had to spoil it by swapping Bothroyd for Ward in the second half.

Of course we are Wolves, so just when we look to have improved our attacking options the defence and midfield have got worse.

The new Bull and Mutch is a little premature.

However, there is no denying that this partnership was a breath of fresh air and to see 2 young lads in Wolves shirts knowing how to play as a productive front pair, wining the ball in the air, flicking it on to his partner...

I had the pleasure of meeting Big Mick last night and I told him that out of all the partnerships he has tried this season, this looked by far the most competant and promising.

I can't wait to see them again next game.
