Surely we didn't do any underhand tapping up?

From their FootyMad site:

Below is the full text of Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton's statement after the £850,000 sale of Andy Keogh to Wolves.

I know the fans will be very disappointed to learn that we have agreed to sell Andy but I hope they can understand that this decision was not influenced by the amount of the transfer fee involved but by Andy's persistence that he be allowed to leave. A number of clubs registered their interest in Andy and we made it clear to all of them that he would remain at Scunthorpe until the end of his contract. It was therefore a complete surprise to us that he had his mind set on joining Wolverhampton (http://www.scunthorpeunited-mad.co.uk/news/loadnews.asp?cid=TMNW&id=320660#) Wanderers before they even had permission to speak to him.

After discussing the situation with the manager and his assistants we all felt Andy would not help our push for promotion if he was not 100 per cent committed to the team. As we saw on Saturday, a committed Andy Keogh is a truly outstanding player but this commitment was in the knowledge that it might well be his last game for Scunthorpe United. In his time with us he has played a huge part in getting us to the top of League 1 and we must thank him for that and wish him continued success with his new club.

The fee involved is £600,000 of which £100,000 will go to Leeds United. There is a 15% Sell-On and other possible additions should Wolverhampton Wanderers attain promotion to the Premier League (http://www.scunthorpeunited-mad.co.uk/news/loadnews.asp?cid=TMNW&id=320660#) whilst Andy is their player.

It is vital that we use this income to strengthen the team, not only for the rest of this season, but also for next season when we hope to be playing at a higher level. Just as we had no desire to part with a player mid-season, we are finding other clubs reluctant to part with good players in the January transfer window, but we are hopeful some progress might be made during this next week.

As you already know, we turned down a very big offer for Billy Sharp and I am pleased to say, Billy remains totally committed to Scunthorpe United.

It's all very well this tapping up but a lot of the time I bet it just getting rid of a lot of time wasting.

What's the point of going through all the official flannel just to get knocked back?

I'm not saying clubs should be able to un settle and set up deals on the sly but a quick call or word saying "would you perhaps be interested if we came in for you?" should be ok.

A quick yay or nay and you know whether to be bothered to pursue it.

Maybe it happens the other way around - with the player's agent hawking him around to clubs?

Would any clubs have the moral backbone to report such an agent?

Or maybe we should just be thankful that MM has the necessary contacts in the lower leagues to not only identify his targets but to do his damndest to get them.

When was the last time we were classed as a club who actively signed young and hungry lower league players with potentially excellent re-sale value.

It sounds to me as a letter to the fans to reassure them of their ambition after selling their best player. Whether they wanted to keep him or not who knows!? but they don't want to fans to think they let him go easily.

it's fluff and bluster. chairmen agree to the deal over a glass of port. they both agree that the selling chairman will flap his gums about fighting to keep the player, not being happy about the sale, whaa, whaa. the buying chairman is happy as his club's supporters think thet have just secured the deal of the season. to call it lip service would be underselling it. it's just a giant pantomomine really, played out time and time again.

There wouldn't have had to be any tapping up for him to know of Wolves interest. He would only have had to read the tabloids, or the Scunny forums to know we were gung ho to get him.

Why did he have his mind set on joining us? Are we still a big club to the lower leagues?

The Scuny chairman may be a bit narked about Keogh leaving but what have Wolves done wrong? They voiced their interest and the rest is now history.

Amateur physco/kidology stuff to appease the fans.
Similar to the rubbish blues used to trot out years ago in the Barry Fry years i.e. we have had a bid of £2.5m for Zidane turned down , look how ambitious we are though.
