View Full Version : Director of Football
There were a lot of calls recently for a DoF to be appointed. Personally, I've never really understood what one does. But people were very keen. I was just wandering if people still think we need one, given our current situation. And if so, what exactly would they do?
They interfere with the running of the team and end up $$$$ing off the manager in charge. I can't think of a situation where it has worked out.

Broadly speaking, they provide a link from the board to the team manager. I always seem to notice there are calls for DOF when we are doing $$$$. I don’t think they are necessary, although I wouldn’t be adverse to having someone on the board with a 'working knowledge' of the game, just to provide insight if anything. Clubs don’t seem to introduce Directors of Football when they are being successful ( as far as I can tell, though I await someone to prove me wrong ) and if things are not going too well it might cause problems if they manager starts to feel undermined? Look at Zalec/Redknapp or Taylor at the Vile.

It's a strange position. IMHO - if you have a reasonably strong manager who is able to work well in the transfer market then I don't actually see any need. The CEO / Company Secretary can deal with all the contract negotiations.
If a DOF is supposed to oversee all football afairs from youth through to first team, that just seems to undermine the authority of the manager.
Tottenham are about the only team that I can think of who have been reasonably successful with a Director Of Football and I think he $$$$ed and joined Chelsea.
Talk of having a DOF at Wolves was just a scam by Heywood to make us all think that he is still interested, but luckily for us we all saw through his evil plan.
