View Full Version : Keane as a Manager....

Now it's official how do you think Keane is going to fair as a manager? In my opinion he is inheriting a good team built by our Mick but do you think his managerial style is going to be like Souness and rule by intimidation or do you think he'll be a straight talking manager with a bit more upstairs?

My money would be on him being a Souness type of manager, he has always had that air about him as witnessed before the 2002 World CUp when he fell out with Mick.

I can't believe Sunderland, a Championship side, are going to pay a novice £2m pa to manage their club.

Seems crazy to me and a gamble that may well backfire spectacularly.

He certainly does have that reputation as a player Lupo. I think Sunderland will do ok to start but as the season goes on I think they will loose momentum with Keane showing his lack of experience as manager. Down the road if he can get over that intimidating attitude I think he might do ok.

Thought 'managers' had to take some form of 'management' training at some point to be allowed to practice the art of managing or am I just a old codger.

Keane, 35, put pen to paper after Monday's Coca-Cola Championship 2-0 win over West Brom at the Stadium of Light.
He will be formally introduced at a press conference on Tuesday.
What if they lost would he and his agent waited for a win before signing.

Lets see him manage and what players he buys. Cannot believe with his temperement that he will be able deal with a couple of games when they loose. It would be no different than a team bringing in David Beckham as a manager a big name to bring in revenue and temporary confidence.
Maybe he will prove us all wrong but that's a big maybe

Mick McCarthy probably knows the answer to this one and when we get to play them it's going to be one hell of a game.

Roy Keane=unpleasant person with psychopathic tendencies....( alleged! ).

I'll stick with Big Mick thank you very much, he's far less likely to commit GBH on his own players.

Sunderland will have the inevitable upturn in form ( it started today! ) and then disaster will strike when Keane starts a fight on the Molineux touchline with Big Mick and Sunderland have to sack him!

Quinn was desperate, Keane wanted some more money. I dont think Keanes heart will b in it and i dont think he will make a good manager. I think he will become easily frustrated when a player doesnt do something he wants. Yes there will be a brief motivation, and he may be able to attract some players, but who will want to go there...

The Irish FA preparation for the 2002 world cup was appalling - Keane spoke out and rightly so - McCarthy as a manager was limited in what he could say due to his position, I have no doubt if push came to shove McCarthy and Keane wouldnt have been far apart on the football issues - Its just that management can compramise you at times.

It will be interesting to see if Keane is so forthright when in a similar position or will he be a Keegan with tantrums and walkouts £2m a season contract may just curb some of his excesses. I like the bloke and hope he does well - a real working class hero - warts and all.

I also think Ince will soon be on the scene in this division, should be fun.

Just caught that on the repeat showing.

Very strange reaction.

Quinn (supposedly Keane's new boss) tapped Keane on the shoulder enthusiatically and Keane looked up and icily nodded his head to him.

No smile, no niceities, no rapport. Not what I would expect between a Chairman and his new manager.

Quinn then sat well apart from Keane, few rows in front.

The commentators dismissed it as Keane 'concentrating on the game'.

But Keane's always been that way with everyone - team mates at Utd, Ferguson, international colleagues - he admits in his autobiography that he's a loner and doesn't have a single friend in football.

For what it's worth, I think he'll get Sunderland stable and midtable this season and take them up next season. He's got a very sharp tactical mind, can see problems developing before other people (he knew Man Utd had major problems when they lost to Bayern Munich in 2000/01 and was subsequently proved right, look at their record in the Champions League since), isn't afraid to tell it like it is and commands respect in the game.

As for Keane, I normally agree with Deutsch Wolf but I am not at all convinced about him. No doubting his footballing skills, leadership qualities etc.but he is on uncharted waters. To my mind a lot could depend on who he has helping him.

My God you've read the autobiography?
I think ignoring people is part of his attitude problem and this early meeting with Quinn indicates how difficult it may be for Keane to deal with it.

Sunderland's success (or lack of it) will depend on Keane's back room staff rather than himself. As a front man he is a sop to the fans by an increasingly desperate Quinn.

(and I don't really care either).

I think Keane's appointment will be a good chance to see how important the style of chairmanship is. Jordan at Palace is the polar opposite of Quinn. Jordan has said to Peter Taylor, get us promoted now or I'll kill your children and eat your pets. Affable Niall has politely asked Roy if he could see fit to pointing the club in the right direction over the coming 10 years. It will be very interesting to see whether the inexperienced manager working under a patient chairman delivers success over the ravenous chairman and the experienced manager with a good CV. Is patient planning going to win through over dynamic, hands on leadership?

Having read his interview, I think he may be a suprise to some, and do better than expected. Given the closing of the transfer window he may not do too well this season, but even if he does get the best out of his team, he will never be worth £2m a year. His salary is madness.

Thats if Keane is still in with a job by then

I cant see it lasting at all to be honest a riskey appointment doesnt give it justice this idea of having just retired players become managers is getting ridiculous i mean you only have to look at Boros last result to really see how much it is actully working

*Note- yes i know they beat Chelsea but every team is entitled to a fluke every now and then*

BWII, you could well be right and IMHO the amount of media coverage this appointment is getting is rediculous and plain OTT.

Only time will tell if Keane is going to make he grade but the media seem to be loving every second of his appointment and are stirring things 3 months before the game.

Roy Keane to be sent to the stands as manager of Sunderland this season. 6/4. I will be having a large wager on that.
