Here from Liverpool on a 12 month loan - anyone know anything about him?

No, but his brother Harry is a bit of a wizard

christ that was predictable!

I was going to do a line on getting Weasley and Grainger in too but it was too shameful to contemplate.

Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Darren Potter ended the 2005/06 season on loan at Championship side Southampton.

Potter was given his Liverpool debut by Rafael Benitez in the Champions League qualifier with Graz in August 2004.

A creative central midfield player, Potter came on as a substitute in the first leg in Austria then made his full debut in the second leg 1-0 defeat.

He saw regular action in the Carling Cup run in 2004 and made 10 appearances in the 2004/05 season.

Potter is a former Liverpool schoolboy's captain who was once with Everton but the Blues didn't take the option to sign him.

Potter is a highly rated central midfield player who has a good eye for a pass. He has progressed from the Academy and has been a regular member of the reserve side, under the close influence of Hughie McAuley.

Cool.

Think he is backup or a starter?

Sounds like he's is a starter until Mark Davies comes back from injury.

Twelve months ago..

His encouraging displays down the right flank in recent games have suggested that he now deserves a regular first teamplace but the down-to-earth Academy graduate is refusing to get too carried away.

He adds: "I haven't set myself any goals particularly, just to stay in and around the first team. I am not looking too far forward. I thought maybe a loan deal would do me good this season but now I have been involved I am just trying to play as well as I can.

"I am more comfortable in the middle than on the right, but you know that Steven Gerrard, the best player in Europe, Xabi Alonso and Didi Hamann are competing for those places, so it is not going to be easy playing there.

I'm pleased he can play on the right. We need a good right winger more than a centre mid right now... assuming Rosa is ready and Davies is a few weeks away.

so who's going to be the first to slag him off then?

"He did excellently. He is a modern day centre midfielder, he is young and hungry and we are happy to see him here at Wolves."

Nice to see that the buzz phrase is in there - 'young and hungry'.

Is he a 'utility man'? We haven't had a jack of all trades since Neil Emblen. ;)

He's a central midfield player. He's not the right winger that we require unless Gobern can show something decent when he gets fit. He played right-midfield for Liverpool because of who they had to pick from in central midfield so I expect Potter will compete with Olofinjana, Henry, O'Connor for the central berths at Wolves.

BUT he can play on the right though?

BUT he can play on the right though?

He can play there but is no winger. I'd probably liken it to Gerrard playing there for Liverpool. If he does play on the right then we definately need a pacey out-an-out winger for the left side.

So he is going to get 2 crackerjacks in the final and bring the FA cup to Wolverhampton?

I could live with that...

Young creative midfielder and Wolves mentioned in the same breath....I think I need to lie down.

Havn't seen him but if he can give us a semblance of control in midfield, pass accurately and make attacking runs....could be good. All in all I'm impressed with the kind of players MM is trying to get in and competition in the squad is gradually increasing. We still need that raiding winger and someone younger and faster in the centre of defence plus a pacy striker. People can mock if they like but I want this 'young and hungry' idea to stay around. It is the only way this club is going to move forward.

My only concern about Potter is that he might impede Mark Davies's development as they seem to be very similar players. But the more competition the better I guess.

People can mock if they like but I want this 'young and hungry' idea to stay around.

I mock the way that this term is being thrown around again and again to put a positive spin on a lack of funds to buy quality players to mount a realistic promotion challenge.

At the end of the season, they'll be young, they may well have fight in them too (and therefore fulfill the 'hungry' criteria') - but will they have the quality? Thats the important question.

I applaud signing any decent young player and he sounds like he could be a useful player.

But can you please name me a balanced attacking midfield from the squad of players we have? At the moment its a patchwork midfield. Ricketts, Rosa, Olofinjana are all going to be tried out on the wing - but none of them should be playing there!

We have a wealth of players who can play in the middle of the pitch but our options on the left and right are very limited.

Gobern is our only out and out right winger. On the left - Clapham is too slow to go bursting down the left wing, Daniel Jones may be a better option.

Logged on to saintsforever asked for there opinion

got these comments

"good signing. we were hoping to get him on a permanent but GB didn't seem to want to. He improved with every game. Upset that he's going to another championship club hoping to make the play-offs."

"Very good. Took a little bit of time to settle but once he did he was very good!"

"I'd have liked up to get him back Jamboon. Good technique, good vision, good passing, good set-piece delivery. Works fairly hard too. Decent player.

"He was a decent player. I know that quite a few of our fans would have liked us to get him back for this season. He'll do well for you."

No negative comments at all as yet.

Nashie I agree to a large extent with what you say. But quality players (under 30) tend to cost way over a £1m these days and it seems we can only afford them when they are right at the end of their career (and we know that most of the time that doesn't work and even if it does is only a short term solution).

It will be some time before we can compete for the younger quality players we need. In the meantime I, perhaps naively, believe the club may have learnt some lessons from past errors and is concentrating on getting in younger players on the way up who hopefully have something to prove. That is the right decision.

But if someione like Whittingham was available at around £500k then it would be nice to know we could get him if the manager wanted to. Only 21 with plenty of league and U.21 experience etc. But there aren't many like that left within our price range these days. So frees/loans are going to be the main way we strengthen the squad for the moment whether we like it or not.

Liverpool schoolboys captain and played in Liverpool's 1st team. Sounds like top quality to me Nashie.
I guess this is one we can stop worrying about - let's concentrate on worrying about Leon's quality :)

The Punisher
16-08-2006, 11:16
Sounds like this lad could be a good signing.

Why dont we try and tempt Liverpools young winger Anderson here on loan. I think they signed him from Hull last season. I'm quite sure Liverpool would let him come on loan for the season.

It will be interesting to see if McCarthy signs either or both Johnson and Senda. From what I have heard of them I would sign them both. Johnson has the potential to be a very good player at this level by all accounts.

I would still like to see us bring in a pacey centre back and we'll need to bring in a left sided player if Naylor leaves.

AndyP
16-08-2006, 11:26
Apparently Hearts were willing to pay £750,000 for this lad and make him their joint highest paid player on £10,000 a week! Looks like it might have fallen through because he broke a vertebra.

The problem is there hasn't been a period of transition, it was a case of, throw all our old players a way and lets get some bodies in to make up the numbers very quickly.

Hopefully over the next couple of years we will see the club buying 18, 19, 20 year old exciting prospects from lower league sides for between 300 and 500k and developing a good attacking side. Right now Mick has a fight just to field a side of square pegs in square holes.

But to get back to the signing of Potter - this seems to be an ideal signing, a young player with promise from a Prem team on loan for a year. The comments have all been positive, well done Mick. Now can we have 2 pacey wingers please!

I hate to be negative but hope he fairs better than our previous loan signings such as Huddlestone and Cole, feels like a mid-table signing to me!!

Well this Potter kid sounds like a good player. Hopefully this solves our attacking central midfield issue until Davies comes back. Still need a left winger urgently, and i'd like a central defender with some pace.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought the general opinion on Huddlestone was pretty good - and he was missed after he'd gone??? i personally thought he added something to the team at the time

Agree on Cole though - still surprised he hasn't "found his level" after all this time :)

MM oviously sees Darren Potter bringing something extra to the midfield, or otherwise he wouldnt waste what little money he has at his disposal.

Potter obvious has some talent as he is with liverpool, and looking at the strength of the midfield there is no way he going to get in there at the moment...

More good news for us IMO!

Essex Wolf

Sounds a decent signing, could soon have almost half a team of long term loan signings and if they do the business then good news.

Wulfhere

It is an area where we are short and need strengthening, lets hope he can do the business for us. As always he sounds promising but we will have to judge him on what he achieves at the club.

anyone know what the rules are for loan signings? I thought it was no more 2 loan signings at any one time - and 4 in 1 season????

It's been a while since i allowed myself to play "championship manager" or whatever its called now (due to D.I.V.O.R.C.E. etc) :D

4 loan signings at any one time and 8 over the course of a season i think. someone mentioned the rules properly a few weeks ago but i always forget them.

looks like a good signing from what everyone is saying about him. i expect him to be on the bench at burnley on saturday.

also, i thought huddlestone did well when he was here as well, cole was a waste of space though

johnybig32
16-08-2006, 13:45
I think Cole will have a good season this year. The guy was strong, quick, powerful, skillful, and did seem to have an abilty...Huddlestone to me is exactly the same...

Both of the players started well but lost there way pretty quickler...TH after the Derby goal.I do think Twoddle didnt use him effectively though...

Just my opinion, but Carlton Cole is dross. Lazy, arrogant, average player with less poise on the ball than Carl Cort and the workrate of Leon Clarke.

As for Potter - he's always looked good to me on the rare occasions I've seen him play for Liverpool. Good news if we can bring him in.

johnybig32

Alot of players are willing to go out on loan to get first team football etc but with Cole wasn't he sent to us for disciplinary problems at Chelsea?

I don't think he had much choice in the matter. He did score against Norwich.:o

i remember watching crystal palace v liverpool in last seasons league cup on the box - and i seem to remember they were raving about darren potter - they did a "player profile" type thing on him before the match - and i remember then saying how difficult it was going to be for him with gerrard, hamman and sisoko et all ahead of him - but nevertheless, everyone had very high expectations of him within the club

lets hope we get the best of him this season :)

a bit confused as to why we've made this signing tbh

not the area of the team which most needs looking at. i.e - the wings, or experienced defensive midfielder ala carsley, or a quick centre back

good to see we're bringing in another striker too though in johnson
