View Full Version : Expectations this season?

Not what you think is going to happen - but now McCarthy has been installed, what are your expectations for the coming season?
I know it all depends on who he signs etc and it's still early days, but I was listening to Kenny Hibbett on SkySports News earlier, and he said something along the lines of "we should expect mid table this season, then push on next season" - do you think most wolves fans would be happy with that? How realistic are our chances given we have lost virtually an entire team of players?
wasn't there a poll like this yesterday?
anyway im going for mid-table simply because it is an absolutely huge ask for mick to hit the ground running with only half a squad.
id love to be proved wrong though.
Wasn't this already polled?
Anyway i think our expectations have already been lowered enough that we would accept a mid table finish as long as it looked like we would build and be looking at promotion the following season.

I expect to consume a minimum of 130 pints during the season (home league games only included) but I fear my pre-season has been poor and that low total could be missed.......meaning I will lose my place by the dart board in the Western.

I would settle for a season of stabilising in readiness for a good summer next year and a much better season to follow.
I just hope everyone gives Merlin the required patience and realise that Rome wasn't built in a day (pardon the cliche).
I have gone for play offs at best.
I don't think we have enough to challenge for automatic and won't be surprised if we don't make them but I don't think we have no chance of them either.
A decent season would see us scrape in.

When you say mid table mediocrity, mid table does not have to mean mediocre, hopefully we will create a young team with potential that gets a season under its belt in order to get straight at it next term

As it takes time for any new players to settle in I will be extremely happy with mid-table at the end of the season.
As much as I think the new manager is as good as we could have got we mustn't overlook the fact that we're currently looking at survival as being the first aim.

We all have to realise that this is going to be a season of transition. Automatic promotion could be done although this is a very long shot. As long as the team start to put in performances that show they're up for a fight I wouldn't be too concerned about not being in a play off place as long as there is something to show that we could be challenging for a top 2 place in 07-08.
We all have to give MM a certain amount of leeway over the next few months and mustn't start moaning if we're not winning all games 4-0.

What is this a daily poll in case we forgot what we said the day before.
As he says "My initials stand for Mick McCarthy not Merlin the Magician" lets wait at least a week shall we before we are asked to predict where we may finish this season under M.M.

To stuj4z, yammer and OldWolvesFart - yes, I did see yesterday's poll - but if you read my post rather than criticising me for supposedly not reading other posts - you will see that I am not asking for predictions, I just wondered what our expectations as fans should be - this is an entirely different question
If anyone saw the Kenny Hibbett interview (which is available on YouTube as well btw), he appears to be speaking on behalf of the fans of Wolverhampton when he says we should expect a mid-table finish - I just wondered whether that was the feeling of wolves fans everywhere
Isn't that the point of forums? Oh no, it's just to jump on people in a smarmy, know-it-all manner isn't it, I forgot...

Sorry i don't understand this. Are you saying that the position people predict us to finish is different to where they expect us to finish? I generally predict something when i think it will happen myself.

I know what you mean, but where I was coming from was around Hibbett's comments earlier in that we shouldn't expect anything higher than mid table. Imagine Cardiff last season - their fans expected mid table, but probably thought that play-offs might be achievable - but when they didn't achieve play-offs, then the was no unrest and dissaitisfaction aimed at our good friend Mr Jones.
Does that explain? (probably not!)
so if i predict that we will finish in the play-offs but expect to finish in mid-table, these are different things.
i expect we will finish mid-table so i predict that is where we will finish.

Well, it's sort of both  - sorry!
I know that our expectations should be probably mid table given the current state of affairs - but given that this guy has supposedly worked miracles in the past - have people's expectations changed simply on his appointment alone? I think we're all a tad more optimistic than if Hoddle was still in charge - but is this simply because Hoddle was so bad, or because MM is potentially the Messiah*

Everything this season depends on who McCarthy manages to bring in over the new weeka and a bit.
Seems we have already lost out on the Luton captain and possibly Whitingham as well so it will be interesting to see who MM goes for.
I don't expect anything more than mid-table, so above that will be a bonus to me. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of decent games this season though, I missed the handful that were supposedly good last season.
