Its being reported that Damien Duff has been signed by Newcastle for only 5 million. Supposedly reported on the Stock Exchange.
Anyone you fancy if they are giving out bargains?:D

Shevchenko £1m
Lampard £500k
Terry £750k
Cech £150k
Why on earth has Duff gone to Newcastle? It's not as if they're gonna win anything any time soon.

If true this shows how much bull we read in the papers. Spurs had definitely offered £7million and Newcastle had bid £10million.

I can't understand why Duff would choose Newcastle, a team going backwards at other end of the country over Tottenham who are going forwards and only a few miles away? He'd still be pretty certain to play most games at Spurs I would have thought?

Certain of a place at Newcastle. As simple as that.
I wouldn't say Newcastle are going backwards.
If you look at their ideal first 11, theres some quality in there. Owen, Duff, Scott Parker. Granted I am surprised he didn't opt for Tottenham but Newcastle are heading in the right direction but it will be a couple of years before they can be challenging for a champions league spot.

Simple answer Chelsea had to persuade to go down south and now he is just getting back up north where he feels better much the same as myself , pity sadam didnt bomb london so we could then jump on a ferry at stratford rather than have to endure the m25 and dover :D

I for one can't understand Duff's decision here. PLay alongside some of the best young homegrown players in the country at Spurs under a great manager in Martin Jol, or come to Newcastle who have a non-entity as a manager, a $$$$er as Chairman and a bunch of retards and crocks as players. Mind boggling decision. Newcastle are a horrible team with arrogant, horrible fans. I know, I live amongst them.

Word is Liverpool bid for him too. The only explanation must be that newcastle offered him an extra £10k or so a week.
Hopefully Liverpool'll get Pennant now. I dont fancy our Lee being up against him this season!!!

Apparently Newcastle have doubled his wages. He has gone for the money.
yep, confirmed on skysports news just. £5m transfer reported on stock exchange and confirmed by chelsea.
stupid move career wise but if it is more to do with him feeling more at home up north then fair enough.

Do I detect a hint of bias here?;)

as has been said. Guaranteed first team place. Not everyone is happy playing half a season and still getting paid for the full show.

How do we know.......you could have just randomly quoted without reading it.........stupid question
London is not to everyone's taste I suppose, but if Liverpool were an option then why not go there?
First Owen, then Duff. Newcastle must offer them a ridiculous amount of money to sign. Owen even admitted as much.
Just goes to show that most players couldn't really give a damn about winning things. It's all about the money.

It sounds a more realistic value, still OTT IMO but I really don't give a 5h!t.

Can we just assume that the real reason Duff went to Newcastle is that they promised him a lot more in terms of wages.
That or maybe he happens to like the Newcastle totty...

chelsea arnt gona give there best away to local rivals
newcastle are a nothing team who will do nothing who ever they sign ~ fans expectto much and pressure on players ......
duff went cheap as not one would pay his £70k pw salary without a deep discount to soften the blow

I think given the way in which the Newcastle chairman was creaming over what chelsea have done for them that we have seen Duff being sold to Newcastle at a reduced rate to what was accepted by other clubs beause they are not a threat to the title.
So perhaps Chelsea have reduced the asking price to perhaps the only club outside the four ther highest clubs in the premiership that could afford him and that Duff himself would play for and the reduced fee simply allowing Newcastle to pay some of the massive wage demands.
I think above all else in this deal was, what was in Chelsea's best interests and that meant not selling Duff to a rival even if it costs them money, and particularly Man Utd or Liverpool ! For that reason I suspect there was a very differnet price to Newcastle than would have been quoted to Liverpool.
As it stands Newcastle have got a ridiculous bargain, Duff has got a guaranteed place at a big and European challenging club and Chelsea have not sold this player to a direct rival. Having that sort of money obviously gives you options with selling as well as buying !
Agree with Davebull on this one, pretty similar circumstances to when they signed him just to prevent Man U doing so.

for once, i actually know something (granted, not the whole story!) about this - unlike Desert Wolf, I will reveal my sources (to a point) - my neighbour works for a company who are associated with Liverpool FC (can't say who ;)) - now according to him (and he's pretty down to earth), Duff was about to sign for Liverpool the other day who had "matched" his contract offer from Spurs - then his agent got him another £20K a week from Newcastle - BUT with massive rises/bonuses if they play in the champions league - both liverpool and newcastle virtually guaranteed him close to 100% first team football

You mean he likes fat chavs who wear short tops and shorter skirts, with tattooed arms, legs, backs and ankles and who shout $$$$ off alot? He's in luck then, they proliferate around the Bigg Market and the Quayside.

Newcastle I can imagine, but Liverpool, with Riise, Aurelio and Kewell able to play down the left hand side? He'd have played more than he would have at Chelsea, but he'll play every game at Newcastle if fit, he wouldn't have done at Liverpool. He'll do well for the Toon if they actually sign a striker who can put his crosses away. Or alternatively, our Mick played Duff as a second striker quite often for Ireland, including during the 2002 World Cup.

It's absurd how Chelsea treat some of there players like dirty washing. They shouldn't be allowed to do this.

the reason he left chelsea is he wouldn't be in the 25 man champ league squad they have to name. Their accountants depreciated his value as an asset sufficiently from the £17 million they paid that they could let him go for £5 million without showing a loss on the balance sheet. They didn't want him at Liverpool because they are a rival and he didn't fancy Tottenham.

Why so bitter about Geordies? When I lived there I generally found then a fantastic, friendly, down to earth bunch of people. I've a suspicion you've recently been dumped by one.

shame she lusts after Alan Shearer and has a penchant for Newcastle tops, but you can't have everything...

Maybe I should have used a wink! Most Geordies are indeed a fine bunch. It's the same as anywhere, you do get your idiots. In particular the older generations of Geordies are great people, and I include my generation in that! And no I haven't been recently dumped by one!
In relation to my earlier post, Newcastle fans are amongst the most arrogant, however, when it comes to their team. Many seem to think that Newcastle belong with the elite when in fact they haven't won anything worthwhile for bloody ages, and that attitude does begin to get on your nerves a little when you live with it day in and day out.
