"wolves fans divided on the issue"? I don't think we have ever been more united, thanks but no thanks
Well he'd certainly be motivated to get us promoted at the expense of Albion. He has a track record of 2 automatic promotions. Ignoring the former Albion allegance, it really is his record at Forest that sours it.

Plus his unimpressive record at Stoke and Stockport.
With Megson its more a case of one success in a sea of mediocrity than the other way around.
So even though he has a track record of getting a team with little money promoted, you insist on saying no?

I wouldnt say he has any sort of track record. He managed it with Albion, once.
Doing something once does not constitute a track record.

No. No and No again. A new generation of managers are available and he certainly is not one of them. Forget his track record, that was in a pooer league. Terrible at Forest. Move on....

The first year he did well, granted. The second year he was aided by having a squad that was excellent compared with the rest of the division.
Against that you have to consider poor spells at Blackpool, Stockport, Stoke and Forest.
Saying we should employ Megson beacuse of one season's success 5 years ago is like appointing Venables because we beat the Dutch once....
Visage Wolf
13-07-2006, 12:33
BTW - i wasnt being serious about appointing Venables.....

A squad that he assembled. You can't discount his second promotion because his 'squad was excellent compared to the rest...' - to say that means he didn't do any work at all and left them to it. Having a good set of players isn't enough and we know that because our squad should have performed much much much better than it did last season.
Personally I don't want him because I don't like the negative poor football his sides play, but if people are prepared to give McCarthy a chance based on the fact that he got Sunderland promoted once (ignoring the fact he just set a record for the lowest points haul in the premiership ever - even though Wigan and West ham have stayed up comfortably without either one spending mega-money), then why so against a guy who got a poor Albion side who were relegation threatened when he arrived, promoted automatically twice at the expense of a side who had 'spunked 12 million up the wall'.
I think he'd certainly be motivated to do the job and compete against Robson's Albion side.

"But I have no allegiance to West Brom in particular. I worked for the club".
So if he said that then we can surely substitute West Brom for Wolves. Its just a job. No thanks.
He's got a better record than McCarthy at this level and higher.

IMO the Megson squad was much stronger, with players like Hoult, Moore and Clement.
McCarthy won prmotion with Carl Robinson in midfield. There's not many stronger endorsements than that.

Not that much for me, but the scrubber element of our support would be on Megsons back as soon as they could, whereas McCarthy has no past history with Wolves.
Ignoring the Chav Bank Massive and their 'Stick your Gary Megson………..' wont happen.

The board are a long way away from understanding the frustrations and needs of the fans at the moment, and this apppointment would further reinforce their neglect for the people who make the club what they are...
Big Saft Kid
13-07-2006, 13:47
Why is this bile reserved for Megson? He's got as a good a record in this division as any of the other probable contenders - better than most? even the best? And who cares if he worked for Albion? Steve Bull was an Albion player, so was Andy Thompson, so was, going back a bit further, Ally Robertson. Ronnie Allen, Albion and England centre-forwrad, managed Wolves pretty successfully in the 60s. What the big deal about the Albion connection?
johnybig32
13-07-2006, 13:49
All due respect, its not so much to do with Albion, but to do with him being ginger and $$$$...

Megson, McCarthy...what's the difference?
Aside from WBA, Megson's managerial performance at other clubs has been poor. He seems to me to be too ready to become argumentative with the board or his players.
McCarthy seems like a better man-manager and better prepared to work on a tight budget.

Unless you appoint Steve Bull, that attitude will be adopted by anyone you appoint.
If ever there were a statement to end an argument, then this is surely it.
Its a good point but it still doesnt alter the fact that when Sunderland went up they ended the season with the lowest points record in premiership history. Sunderland were awful. Albion had more fight in them than Sunderland did, they went down and came back with a stronger squad of players and bounced straight back. There are not many clubs who can bounce straight back up with the same manager no matter how strong the squad of players is.

If you'd have travelled 2,500 miles, parked your car, listened to the team list on the radio and then immediately got back in your car and driven 2,500 miles home without watching the game, then that would be different.

Maybe Im just being greedy TK, but I want success AND attractive football, and I know you might not believe this, but I'd sooner see attractive football than effective football, even at the cost of promotion.
I don't want Megson because of the poor football his teams played. Not bothered about the Albion connection, would have had Robson before he went to Boro if I'd have had my way. Also, not bothered about him being ginger, some of best friends are ginger!! (bless 'em!).

On the basis of their immediate previous managerial record: Paul Jewell would not have been appointed by Wigan. Steve Coppel would not have been appointed by Reading. Neil Warnock would not have been appointed by Sheffield United.
Sometimes true inspiration comes from knowing when to appoint the right man. Of course it's probably mostly luck.
Not saying Megson's the man, of course. I prefer football.
