He should be struck off the referee list for making a big error. He had already booked a croat and the same player received a second yellow card but poll never sent him off! deep into injury time the same player gets booked again and this time gets sent off!

What was the the 4th official doing surely he should have told Poll, they make a great deal of the radio communication, so while I don`t like poll and he made the original $$$$-up, the dirty Croat didn`t walk and he knew he`d been booked, and no one else realised what was going on. Well done the Aussies beating a bunch of thugs.

I agree, the Aussies have got some class players and the Italians are not up to much - too busy looking over thier shoulders at the scandals back home. Main problem for Aussies is the keeper, he was awful.

Unless Schwarzer is killed between now and Monday, there is no way that Kalac will play.

Shame the croats couldn't beat the aussies, but fortunatly i can't see them getting past the italians. Bet Kewell won't be injured for that game..or limp off after 7 minutes..

What would have happened if Simunic had scored and dumped Australia out of the World Cup? Would they have the right to replay the match?

Interesting question, thankfully it never happened! Not sure what would have been the situation if it had. As for the Aussies ony scraping a draw against Croatia, yes , it might have been a draw, but make no mistake Australia were the far superior team, played some really great attacking football and were a class above. They will give Italy a mighty tough game and as long as they don't freeze could win that one.

Graham Poll is a shocking referee, how on earth he became the British candidate to referee in this tournament is beyond me. Too interested in being the celebrity and the centre of attention, I hope FIFA ban him from refereeing.

Agree Mick, his performance last night was the worst I've seen for a long time at any level. Australia should have had 3 penalties, 2 for handball and one early on when Simunic wrestled Viduka to the ground, a blatant penalty. He should also have been booked then and been sent off when he got the next booking.

Poll completely lost the match at the end and did not know what to do. Can you send someone of after a match has ended, should he not have noted the numbers down and referred to them when booking a player.

Considering Poll had Sharp on the line, who officiated in the last WC final he has been let down by them all and more than likely FIFA will announce that all of them are returning home.

Surely one of the other four officials had noted down that the Croat had been booked and could of buzzed him straight away or even spoke to him on the radio or were they listening to the Brazil game on that??

He returned early last WC due to a poor performance from one of his team, a Tunsian lineo I think, looks like he can't step up to the big time

you can also give somebody a red card while they are in the dressing room. I'm not sure what the boundary's of the refs control are, either time wse or geographically.

Can you imagine that fool in front of a World Cup audience of billions? The game would still be going on with Rennie having scored 8, sent off the whole crowd, and reconfigured the rules so he gets to play Brazil in the next round.

Once you leave the pitch you do not use your cards, but inform the club secretary that you will be reporting a player/club official to the FA etc.
Which is all very well but when you are being chased around Windsor Ave playing fields by the front line of the Otter and Vixen telling them you are reporting them it doesn't seem to work:eek:

To be fair to Poll for those penalty decision. For the first he couldn't see the defenders arm round Viduka (linesman should have given it) and the second one he gave a corner so thought it cam off the head of the defender instead. There's no defence for the sending off but like people have said, why didn't the 4th or 5th official tell him or even one of the linesman's over the radio thing. Hell even the ITV pundits could have told him as they wear the same things as well

Graham Poll is always likely to do something which switches the focus of the audience from the football to him - he's been doing it in the Premiership for years and was always llikely to do it in front of a world-wide audience. Even his dressing-room mirror apparently has showbiz-style lights around it.

I can picture him now, yelling to the crowd "don't watch them, watch me, me, me!" :D

POLL FEARS VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE
REFEREE Graham Poll admits his World Cup could be ended by just one mistake.
The Tring official, 42, heads for Germany next Friday as England's representative knowing the pressure is on him and his colleagues.
"If you make a big mistake in your first game, it will be your last game, and that's something that has been made very clear to us," said Poll.

A ref still has the power to book someone until the moment he leaves the ground, although as exile said, he doesn't show a card just informs the club/player of his intention to report the incident to the relevant FA.
