Just like to say that it is Saturday night in Septic land (America) and its times like this I wish I were home in Blighty. Six day's to go to the start of the GREATEST competition on earth and I'm in a country that is so insulated that the majority of it don't even know what is about to be unleashed. I envy you my fellow Wolves fans and anybody in England who are actually going to this great game. I'm sure the atmosphere for the games will be great and I would imagine the whole of Europe will be pretty much shutting down for the five weeks that are about to begin.

I will be watching the games with some of my American fellows who I have tried to instill in them that Wolves are a great team (failed) and that England are going to win the World Cup (Please). There are a few bars in NJ and NY where I can watch the games with ex pats and the atmosphere will be electric and totally foreign to the locals, but I still envy you at home.

Yes I'm drunk! But I love ya all! And come on England!!!!!

I know the feeling, I'm currently stuck in the [anti]septic wasteland that is Dubai, supposedly one of the most cosmpolitan places on earth but in reality a racist corrupt ugly sham of a place.

At least here though there is a gonna be a big world cup scene and the chance to watch each game with the fans of each team.

The team many people here are going for is Iran, for obvious reasons, and as I have some Iranian friends here those matches should be particularly good. Just a shame we're unlikely to see the mother of all games again, Iran Vs The USA ;)

Saudi will also have some support, though there's not so much interest in them as you might have thought, or certainly not amongst the people I know here anyway.

Know the feeling, OLL. Because the first few games are going off real early for me (6 am), I shall watch them on the telly at home and be talking with the other ex-pat Brits here (San Francisco) over the phone. If we progress, then I'll be watching them in the pub to get the atmosphere. Although few Americans show interest, there's a massive international crowd living here and parts of the town really do go wild at World Cup time. There's a few hundred Brits in town who watch at the English pub. Great atmosphere, but I can hardly see the screens because of the crowding. Last time, a bunch of us found this African place that put up a big screen and got really fervent about it. A bunch of us watched our Brazil game there. Around 50 Brits, 50 Brazilians, and scores of Americans who seemed to be evenly split over who they cheered for. Great night, apart from the result :( Made more pleasurable by those Brazilian girls who turned up in bikinis :) and played the bongos (if that's the word).
Like you, I miss all the build up.

Where do you go? I used to go down to the Mad dog in the Fog on Sunday's for a good fry up and some pints of Guinness. Would imagine it would be a good place to watch the games.

Used to, that's the pub I mentioned that gets too packed. They have to lock-out some fans. Not sure for this year. We eye the pubs, once the competition begins, to see which is most fun. I'll proably use the African place again if it's still happening. That's in the Mission disctrict if you know San Francisco.

Moving to Atlanta next week. Found some "pubs" online but as those of you living over here know, its only called an English pub by the fact that it serves a bad immitation of Fish and Chips and has a Red Phone Box outside. But I live in hope.

Come on England

Brewhouse at Little 5 Points. You'll find plenty of Wolves fans in there and it'll be rammed for the England games.
Fado's in Buckhead is good too, more Irish though.

Guys I am missing the build up as well. just ot the same with all the sweaties.
I am Travelling to Newcastle on Saturday so I can watch the game with other England fans.
Monday I fly to Turkey for a weeks holiday, back on the 19th hope to e in either Wolvo, or Bradford for the Sweden game.

Any one in Scotland where are you watching the games.

It is quite funny at the moment the Scottish Race relations board has come out and told the scottish that the anti English behaviour at the moment is racist. there is quite a bit of fun up here however it really is quite intimidating and racist. The local paper put a St George flag on a car in George square it was spat on, people were shouting to brick the car, in the end the flag was binned by some thugs

Im Buzzing about the world cup now, WC fever has hit.

If we didnt have exams at the moment, we would have tried for tickets, and gone even if we didnt have any, but at the time when we neeeded to book everything, we didnt know when my exams were. Oh well.

Its not just the England matches that get me excited, its the the thought of a couple of big matches every day, wallcharts to fill in, WC bbq's to have etc etc.

Would you pay these prices for tickets if you had the money? I actually think, the way I feel now, if i had the disposable income, I would actually pay what it takes to go.

That said, to follow England's most probable path, all the way to the final would cost $15,264.

Thats the 3 group games, the 2nd round (game 51 - assuming we win the group) and then the corresponding quarter final, semi final, then the final.

Would be a bugger if we came 2nd in the group and you'd spent $15000 following Sweden.

GW, I lived in Stirling for five long years, and this kind of stuff was going on all the time. It ranges from full-on oikishness to more subtle stuff, and sometimes it is of course only humorous banter and good for a laugh - but god did it start to wear me down sometimes. Get a bl**dy life!! I met many lovely Scottish people, dinnae get ma wroong pal, but overall there's a deep-seated anti-Englishness that just seems to hang over the place like the grey clouds hang over Glasgow.

In five years, the biggest cheering I ever heard from the sports bar over the road from where I lived was when France scored those two really really late goals at Euro2004 to beat England 2-1. Says it all really, that!

How do you feel about England fans singing "Ten German Bombers"?

glasgowwolf

DW I am not defending England fans. but I doubt if a German In England would be met with the same level of abuse the English are getting in Scotland.
From the media to the public. you can get glassed in Glasgow at the moment for having an English accent.

you do that, but I have been in England, I now work with every nationality. From Germans, Italians, French. None have had a problem, I have never seen the racial equality people complaiing about the abuse from 90% of the English towards any nation. Yet 90% of the scots are openly hostile, Openly racisty towards the English. that is there figures not mine.

I guess the feeling of "racism" is only easily apparent when you're on the end of it. How can a non-German know what it's like to be a German living in The UK, just as how can a non-English know what it's like living in Scotland?!

I remember at many parties in Scotland, an Irish friend of mine would often get out his guitar and get old anti-English folk songs going, saying it was "just a laugh" etc. Like I've heard many people doing the 10 Bombers song etc "just for a laugh". I myself have a good German friend who I often joke tongue-in-cheek at with WW2-cheesy-film-lines, "just for a laugh". We're all guilty of it!

I'm sure some learned soul can come on here and tell us about how it's context that counts etc etc etc :p
