I know they say never go back but it's been four years since he left Wolves and Sam Winnall has gone from strength to strength. 23 in 45 for Scunthorpe in League Two earned him a move to Barnsley, where he continued to score for fun repeating the feat with 23 in 46 in League One, helping them to the highest total points tally of any side in English football in 2016 which saw Barnsley get promoted to the Championship and now just 4 points off the play-offs.

6 of his 11 goals this season have come from headers which is a league high, something we miss massively is a striker with an aerial threat and this is something he possesses. 11 in 20 starts in total so far this season, keeping to that ratio of having scored a goal every other game. He also possesses a better goals per minute ratio (146) than Scott Hogan (161), Tammy Abraham (150), Sam Gallagher (202) and Jonathan Kodjia (227).

He's about to turn 26, and approaching the prime of his career. He's scored 7 goals in his last 7 starts in the Championship, earning him player of the month in December. His contract runs out this summer, meaning Barnsley would likely accept a fee in the region of £2-3 million rather than lose him for nothing. He's a local lad born in Wolverhampton with a point to prove. Would you take him back?

Here's a highlight reel of his goals prior to this current season:

And the goals which earned him Championship POTM for December:

I really like the guy, it was simple to see he was a talent and aa goal scorer just from his time at Burton. We kept him around till ge was 23, that only happens when a club rates sombody. Why we let him go in the summer of the league 1 season was just strange.

    I would take him, definitely.

It seems like everyone's contract is up in the summer!

He could turn out to be Leon Clarke mark2. Wouldn't want that to happen to him as I really like him.

Never understood why we didnt keep him for another 6-12 months. He had just come back from a long injury, scored some goals, and then we only offered him a contract worth nothing (about £150 a week). Of course he turned us down and moved on. If we had offered him £500 a week like a normal/good wage for an U21 player, I am sure he had stayed.

At this point? Dont think its worth it. Whats done is done and mistakes are mistakes.

edit: about the injury above really cant remember and might be wrong - thought he was out for almost a year, but cant find when that was when looking back at stats. Looks like only two months Oct 12-Jan 13.

It's kind of like Sam Vokes, we let him go just when we'd dropped to the level he needed to play in to kick start his career.

Dont think it was particularly strange. The club put their eggs in the Cassidy and McAlinden baskets and got it horribly wrong allowing him to go given Cassidy was a flash in the pan at Tranmere and McAlinden never delivered on his potential.

If we could get him for 2-3M then it looks good business for us as we can no longer have aspirations to spend big money on a striker.

Feels like it would be worth the gamble, bang in form, Wolves lad, coming into his best years as a strong in the air style No.9.

Wouldn't complain. Might even be happy actually

This is bang on and it was obvious to anybody with eyes that Winnall was better than the pair of them. I can't imagine Sam has fond memories of Kevin Thelwell as no doubt he would've been the one to let him go.

He's one of the two strikers I'd have gone for in this window, so it'd be a big yes from me

Surely with our (Fosun's I know) finances and having a group of strikers who haven't scored since goodness knows when, it is a no brainer, especially with his stats since he left us. He has to be more successful, even if we think our midfield can't create enough chances for him, than what we have and if he turned out to be rubbish (which he surely won't) we could afford to write off the cost. Win/win surely?

That would be a very 'Brentford' move indeed, all the stats point towards him being more than capable of replacing Scott Hogan for a pittance compared to what they'll get from West Ham.

It would be very 'Wolves' to ignore this and bring in a Premier League reject we have no chance of signing in the summer just to do them the favour of getting games ala Ojo. I hope I'm wrong!

    Nope,
He most likely saw what happened to Leon Clarke when he came back and wouldn't want the same.
If he's going to move then he needs a fresh start at a new club to push on with his career.
Not entirely convinced he would be right for us in the long term but hey, what do I know......

I think you are right. But what happened to Leon Clarke was he played rubbish and looked like he couldn't be bothered because he is a poor footballer. Winnall looks a different get. Personally I think we should not re visit old players, and I don't think they, on the whole, should re visit us

Bogle is certainly worth a look. Power, pace, holds the ball up well, scores goals, only 23. Could be the new Andre Gray.

This thread made me wonder where one of our other former strikers tipped for the top - Jake Cassidy, was now. Playing for non league Guiseley it turns out.

Clearly we made the right decision in failing to offer Winnall a decent contract and keeping Jake Cassidy on instead. Now I wonder who made that sterling call...

And Alan Nixon reveals Sheffield Wednesday's bid of £500k is likely to be accepted. We probably can't afford him with FFP and all that... At least he can't score against us this season.

I don't get that comment ,FFP would preclude us from signing Winnall for £500K in a position where we are crying out for improvement and yet we are allegedly prepared to pay double that for a player in a position we are not desperately in need of at this moment in time .

We'd be barmy not to be in for him at that price.

We need a striker, we're short of goals, he's a different kind of striker to the ones we have, he's from Wolverhampton, it's an absolute no brainer.

I don't think you would be on your own there but with The Thelwell in charge he ain't coming back as Thelwell won't want to lose face. Even though we know the ferret faced ***** is wrong.

500k, scoring regularly (albeit at a lower level) has to be worth a shot. It depends upon what terms he left the club I suppose and whether he thinks he will be given a chance if he comes back.

I'm pretty sure Winnall was offered the chance he's come back home... If the 500k rumours are right then that's a bargain.
