Now, this isn't a thread about the big man per se. I saw him pop up on Sky Sports Saturday a couple of weeks back, having scored for Braintree whilst on loan from Colchester. It got me thinking that although he was, shall we say, raw, he can't be that bad now that he has to play non-league games surely? I mean, he was a better standard than that when he was with us, wasn't he?

That got me onto thinking about the true level of people at our club, how many players are likely to move on to better things when their time at Wolves is up? How many of the staff will stay in very well paid positions at Championship clubs or even move higher when (if) their time at Molineux comes to an end?

Some of the younger lads might do ok, Dicko has a chance if he gets back to top form as do players like Graham and Zyro if they fully recover from their long term injuries. But the majority of our established playing staff, and backroom staff, I can only see them doing the Elokobi, falling further and further away from the elite (and getting paid less and less at the same time).

Do we really have a club full of hangers on? New owners, three managers and still all the same old faces. It seems so comfortable for everyone involved, if it is the case, how the hell do we sort it out??

We had a good clear out of players a few years ago but then rebuilt the squad with too many "average" players who are/were no more than mid to lower table Championship players at best with many probably being more suited to League 1.
We need to get out of this annoying habit of buying so many players who are promising for the future and instead by a few quality players who will add value to the team here and now.
My guess is also that come the end of the season, many of the backroom staff who were kept on for some sort of continuity after the takeover will also be moved on. Our owners can't be happy with the developments this season and I wouldn't mind betting are already formulating a plan for next season, hopefully in the Championship rather than League 1!

He was around 24 when he signed for us.

He's now 30, had a couple of serious injuries, and he's a bit too big and heavy and probably a bit of the pace.

Great guy and I loved him - but with his rawness, injuries and over-enthusiasm for body building which has made him have more of a rugby players physique than a footballers physique, it was inevitable that the career was going to decline so early.

To be fair though, George just won't care. As long as he's getting a game, whatever the standard, he'll be happy. He's that kind of guy.

Good post Akaman. This is exactly what I've been saying for 2 or 3 years, or even more.

We are now at the point in the future that a large number of players were bought for, but who are they, and where are they?

You are perfectly correct in that we have too many personnel ( both on and off the field) for which the only way is down. Lets hope Bright, Ronan, Costa and Cav buck that trend because I can't really see even Hause and Iorfa achieving much more than they are at present.

History at Wolves is littered with people on the way down.

The true level of some of our players???

That depends on whether we have just won or not!
I am intrigued by the potential of some of our youngsters ie Ronan, Herc, Bright, Graham, Ennis, and we have some quality in Cav, Costa, but most of the spine is still fairly standard championship fare I'm afraid.

Everyone lives by their reputation. Few good games early in your career on the telly and you're a megastar. Everyone finds their level eventually. See George for details. Also see O'Hara. D. Batth to follow.

He was a terrible player and a flag bearer for our premier league failures along with Ward, Edwards, Henry and co.

And in answer to the above question regarding Ward, this is the first season he has actually started in the premier league other than three games two years ago.

I always find this kind of thread amusing, we are a club playing in the championship therefore have a number of championship level players. The vast majority of the squad have played nearly all their career at this level, for a reason, Its their level. Even some of our "better" players are still top championship players rather than prem standard ones with the exception of Costa who clearly is head and shoulders above the rest. If you look at the kids, one or maybe two might end up in the prem. Id wager our player of the year (Docherty) or our best central midfielder (Price) will never play in the Prem. Iorfa and Hause both need a move but have potential.

    Agreed!
Whilst I acknowledge he is no world beater, I struggle to understand why so many on here slate him. He ALWAYS gave 100% and more - it wasn't his fault that the club did not upgrade his position.
Give me a George Elokobi over those arrogant, obnoxious little so and so's Roger Johnson and Jamie O'Hara any day.
Will never forget that last game of the season when Big George did his "farewell walk" around the ground before leaving the club - nothing but admiration for a classy guy.

One does not 'do the Elokobi'.
He would definitely do you. Whenever he wants.
I'm just thankful he's doing it elsewhere.

George was okay by me. He did his job and was a better footballer than some give him credit for. Headed in a few crucial goals too.

I always enjoyed watching Big George play, he was a beast who loved playing for the Wolves, you could feel the enthusiasm coming from him.
I can't understand anybody slagging the guy off for doing his absolute best for this club and it's cheered me up seeing him still enjoying his football.
Only got good memories of the man, and who could forget this game?
