    Voted in for 2026.
Further dilution of the tournament and yet more money into FIFA's coffers .
16 teams will be home after 2 games.

How does qualification change ? I'm all for it if it means only 3 or 4 qualifying games rather than the ridiculous amount at the moment

La Liga threatening legal action, ECA not happy. I think this will rumble on.

Perfect time to break away from FIFA.

It wouldn't be so bad but the extra places are mostly going to Asian and African teams which just degrade the competition to a whole new level but hey i guess they paid for the changes and more games is more money for Fifa. Qualifying in the Euro zone will be more difficult than the first world cup stage itself, can just imagine a group of Northern Ireland, Bahrain and South Sudan...

As you say - further dilution and avoidance of a notable side getting in, and actually monimising upsets and anomalies. Thereby maximising earning potential for FIFA and forgetting the whole point of the competition that it's a knockout competition.

Knowing that FIFA don't like games played simultaneously unless it is the deciding ones in the Groups and the fact that they will want all games televised, clubs and fans will be interested to hear how long the tournament will last.Throw in where in the World the tournament will be played which will affect live broadcasting times I think this will rumble on and have a major influence on the voting because it can only go to a country with the appropriate infrastructure and stadia.Perhaps we will have a genuine chance but realistically it will probably go to the USA.

    What a load of nonsense.

I've seen they are going ahead with the ridiculous group of three format so I'm assuming that the penalties to separate teams that draw is going ahead too, it's like some ****ty format for American sports where the idea of a third outcome is far too much to comprehend!

If they wanted to "include" the smaller nations in the world cup why not have a couple of preliminary games a week or so prior to the world cup in the host nation and overhaul the ridiculous qualification system?

Seems like the first one, 2026, will almost certainly be in North America so that's probably the US and/or Canada so significant traveling times and differing time zones within the host country will need to be factored into the issues you've already said about broadcasting times/length of tournament!

Europe is going to be the only place they can realistically pull it off without massive inconvenience.

Dont like it, but the World Cup has lost its magic ages ago so I dont care that much.

Cant remember when the World Cup was played under regular circumstances last time. It is often played in such a heat the players cant play proper football, and if the temperature is alright they are testing new balls, rules and other stuff the players are not used to (which makes the games less good). 48 teams and a third only play 2 games is almost a scam.

Won't there be instances of teams playing for a draw in the last game, knowing it's enough?

A ludicrous idea by a ludicrous organisation. The seperate football associations should veto it and absolutely not play but unfortunately they are all pigs with their noses in the FIFA trough. A total and utter embarassment.

I don't know how many games were played in Brazil but a quick totting up of the new format with the smaller groups then knockouts culminating in the Final and 3/4 Play Offs equates to 82 games (open to correction ) in the tournament. What a borefest we are in for .

No doubt but equally if it is in the USA draws won't be allowed so we will probably see the advent of 3x30 minute periods culminating in the Macdonalds sponsored blindfold penalty shoot out played in enormous clown shoes.
All of this will be lapped up by Hiram J Brunchburger 111 and his offspring who has been a Man Utd fan all his life.

If you are really going to have more teams it should be seeded with the top teams coming later in the competition, say 12 teams coming in at the last 16 stage and then 32 teams playing for the last 4 places. I'm not interested in watching Germany shove 8 goals past Burma or something, there are enough mismatches in qualifying.

I'm sure if you crossed enough silver across certain palms you could have a 96 team tournament, played over three months in the middle of summer at a brand new host of stadiums build by slave labour along the Amazon river.

Or perhaps I'm just being a tad cynical...

Madness. Complete greed and a waste of time televising nondescript games. It's bad enough as it is so the only rationale is to boost the coffers.

FIFA have long been unfit for purpose and this new idea just proves it. A waste of time all round. Cuts down competitiveness. Sixteen groups of three FGS and the top two qualify....oh joy of joys..

They have forecast that the new format will increase FIFA's profits from the Brazil tournament by a staggering £1B although it might be $1B.I didn't quite catch it but either way a staggering amount,

Of course all the votes from the new countries involved will keep the new FIFA President in tenure for as long as Blatter.

Can't believe it. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. When I went to one of the group games in this country in '66 the finals comprised 16 teams. Now they are talking 48. Crazy.

All the teams, especially the minnows will play it safe in those opening two group games , so I'm sure we will see a lot of boring defensive football with teams 'parking the bus'

And, who on earth is going to be able to go to a tournament for three to four weeks to support their team? They are taking it away from the supporters to give it to the local middle class near each stadium and the tv fans.
