Villa v Wolves - Post match verdict

Some positives to take but the squad's lack of attacking talent shows again, such is Shi's legacy for selling off and not adequately replacing over the years.

And yes, Martinez made one world class save, but after that I'm not sure we'd have scored if we'd played till midnight, and since we're seemingly incapable of keeping clean sheets it's not going to get much better.

Absolutely an improvement in defensive organisation and resilience more broadly but this squad is still Championship quality and it shows.

Terrible going forward . Zero tactics . Zero idea

Organised at the back and in midfield.

No shots when we had chances

Cheated by the ref and VAR ultimately though

Rogers could have had about 5 yellow cards. Blatant foul as you will EVER see before Villa goal the only reason they broke us down

My verdict is we lost again, for a change. Probably our best performance of the season, and we lost anyway. Because our players are a bunch of losers with a losing mentality. 9 points adrift of safety and it's not even December yet.

We ****ing stink as a club & as a team. It is December tomorrow and we have two points. Even under Mick with our ragtag bunch who we all knew would get relegated put up a better show than these. I can’t even knock the effort as it seemed there today but the lack of pace, invention, ideas and basic quality is sadly missing. Abysmal management from Jeff & Fosun.

I put this on comms thread. I stand by it.

I’ll say it. It won’t be popular. The problem with this team is the two one dimensional Brazilians. They chase the ball around giving away silly fouls. On the ball they offer this team absolutely **** all. They literally have no vision or ability to open up the play. They can’t run with the ball. They can’t spread the play. They can’t pick out passes. This team is better off with just one, and perhaps none, of them. I’m sure they would be great in a technically better team but we actually need someone to take a ****ing risk with the ball. They offer us jack ****.

Nothing will change in the final third until we sign two wingers in January.

Agree that Gomes and Andre as a partnership really isn't working, if Krejci is fit Wednesday then get him there. The 3 CBs did well so wouldn't change them as a unit.

Great first half

Pathetic going forwards last 30mins... Every other team in prem at least puts opposition under pressure when chasing the game but we struggled to get out of own half

Edwards killed game with poor subs... Chirewa always been awful and him being first sub is embarrassing... hes 22 aswell so hardly a youngster... he actually made me miss Munesti

J Gomes so frustrating with ball, slows game down way too much and stopped number of decent opportunities to counter with negative passing

We played to our maximum.

That's the best we can do.

We lack fitness of the other sides (let alone quality), rarely do we have a strong finish to games. And RE relies on fit sides.

Our amateur pre season, recruitment and coaching orchestrated by VP on show game after game.

We were OK. Players were mostly 6 or 7 (up from 5 or 6 we're used to).

1. Young lads aren't ready. Losing the ball and giving silly fouls

2. Andre and Gomez are great snotters but aren't creating anything

3. Arias is not good enough but we have no viable alternative so he'll keep playing

We'll grind out a few wins but we need to start preparing for Division 2 next season. That's going to be the focus of the Jan window. It sucks and could have been avoided but there you go, death by a thousand cuts. You can't keep removing your best players and replacing with lesser ones.

About the subs etc, did anyone check our bench compared to Villa's? Most of their subs would walk into our XI, while ours wouldn't get a game in the Champ most weeks!

A game of small margins. Unlucky disallowed goal for us and some good saves from Martinez. For some reason, VAR decided not to look at the foul on Joao leading up to their goal. which was a clear foul and probably yellow card. It also meant he could not get back to defend the goal. Then in the perverse way that VAR operates, they decide to stop the game later on, give Arias a yellow card and Villa a free kick. Couldn't do that for the foul on Gomes though? I've never seen a Premier League halted, go back to a red card incident a few minutes ago, not give a red card, but give a yellow and restart the game with a free kick for that foul a few minutes ago. I thought it was red card or nothing? Totally bizarre and as inconsistent as ever. At least the ref had the balls not to give a red, but it is cold comfort.

Good luck to Chirewa, he's a young lad and I don't want to be unduly negative, but he's not a Premier League player and never will be. Baffling decision by Edwards to put him on.

Decent enough for 60 mins. Other than first minute didn’t look like conceding and would have scored but for a few saves from Martinez.

Hit 60 mins and we’re bang in trouble - tiring side, losing concentration and no quality on the bench.

No Munetsi or Hwang on - positive but Chirewa first sub was (very) odd.

We had nothing post 60 mins.

Cannot wait for Afcon and we lose 5 players, I’m going to get fit just in case they need someone on the bench….

Thought Edwards had them fired up. Good first half. Their goal was unfortunate and Wolves did enough for one, but alas fine margins with players who fail in those situations. It's like Chirewa on that Kilman goal from a couple seasons ago. This team can't carry players in this league (very few can).

Played pretty well, could/should have scored. Trouble is we no longer have the quality to pull something out of the hat, like we used to when we had Cunha, Neto etc...

Expected a heavy defeat but thankfully, Villa were still hungover from Europe and didn't get out of fist gear - but then a team doesn't have to in order to beat us.

The saddest thing of all is that that non threatening performance with no creativity at all was our best performance of the season. It's unlikely to get any better than that, is it.

Zero points again, zero goals scored again but as good as it gets.

As others have said, probably as well as we can play with that squad. Compact, better in possession but just no real pace or quality going forward. The difference in the quality of substitutes available was incredibly depressing (I know it’s harsh to dig out Chirewa but he wasn’t/isn’t at League 1 standard right now).

Biggest positives probably the performances of Agbadou and JSL. Thought Bellegarde did ok too. Very average at this level but the closest we have to a ball carrier so he has to play.

Johnstone 6
Mosquera 6
Agbadou 7
Toti 6
Tchatchoua 6
Andre 6
J Gomes 6
Wolfe 6
Bellegarde 7
Arias 6
JSL 7

We’re obviously going down so all about trying to be competitive in games and get a few points on the board to take into the second half of the season.

And it eventually bites you on the ****

Best performance of the season by far, matched a good Villa and stopped them playing for the most part. Obvious limitations going forward but even that was much improved today without Munetsi destroying any move. Fer Lopez would add something and of course Krejci.

We are going down, that hasn't and won't change but for the rest of the season we just need to see improvements and get a few wins on the board which will happen if we continue on from today's performance.

I’ll say, we played alright by our own Championship standards. How TC came on I’ll never ever know, would have been better to have been the original TC!

Finally, just so we’re clear, you can review the Arias challenge AND bring it back for a free kick nearly a minute later but you cant bring it back for the foul that they broke away and scored from? You know, an actual game changing decision. Yep, sound…
