Welcome to the Premier League relegation scrap, Sam Allardyce. Your first mission? Ah…

Leeds’ third manager of the season has joined with just four matches remaining, and this most unexpected of stints begins with arguably the toughest task in world football right now – away at Manchester City.

The Premier League title favourites host Leeds on Saturday, with Allardyce’s new side then hosting third-placed Newcastle the following Saturday.

In what is an unpredictable set of final games, Leeds then head to West Ham on 21 May and welcome Tottenham to Elland Road on the last day of the season, 28 May.

Sam Allardyce’s Premier League relegation record as Leeds gamble on ‘survival specialist’

Points are necessary. How many exactly are required to stay up remains to be seen, but currently 17th in the table their destiny is in their own hands.

The same can be said of Leicester and even Nottingham Forest below them, however, given it is just goal difference separating the three sides, who are one point above Everton and six clear of bottom-club Southampton. As it stands, then, Everton must outperform those above them, with four teams likely fighting to avoid two relegation spots.

Here’s how the run-in of Leeds’ rivals compares to Team Allardyce…

Leicester

Current position: 16th

  • 8 May: Fulham (a)
  • 15 May: Liverpool (h)
  • 22 May: Newcastle (a)
  • 28 May: West Ham (h)

A hat-trick of Monday games for Leicester fall before a final-day match that has must-win written all over it. The Foxes will surely need to take points before the last game against the Hammers, with Fulham away perhaps their best bet.

Nottingham Forest

Current position: 18th

  • 8 May: Southampton (h)
  • 13 May: Chelsea (a)
  • 20 May: Arsenal (h)
  • 28 May: Crystal Palace (a)

Monday’s match at home to Southampton presents Nottingham Forest with a huge opportunity to potentially move out of the relegation zone. The heartbreak of dropping all three points against Brentford may well play on their mind, but this run-in presents some chances – ones they must take.

Analysis: Allardyce to Leeds makes no sense

By Daniel Storey, i‘s chief football writer

If the answer is Allardyce in 2023, what is the question? Who would have been a good option five years ago? Who is the perfect guest on the Keys and Gray podcast? Something something a pint of wine? But really, it comes down to this: name a manager who isn’t called Javi Gracia. Leeds already broke the “in case of emergency” glass and now all they have are cuts on their hands.

Such is the strength of Allardyce’s personality, it feels as if he is perennially lingering in the shade just out of shot, either just coming out of a job or just about to get one.

He is always able to explain how he would have done better, how foreign managers have made English football boring to watch despite the increase in goals (yes, actually, look it up), how all Club X needs is the Allardyce dance move – one arm around the shoulder while the foot kicks you squarely up the ****.

But that hasn’t been true for a long while now. Allardyce might appear as the regular sat in the corner of the Premier League Arms, but he has managed 28 matches in the past five years.

Everton

Current position: 19th

  • 8 May: Brighton (a)
  • 14 May: Man City (h)
  • 20 May: Wolves (a)
  • 28 May: Bournemouth (h)

Before Bournemouth, a run of three games where Everton could easily collect zero points, and while a mighty upset is possible at home to Manchester City – they beat Arsenal there in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge – it is away to Brighton and/or Wolves where they must go and get a result.

Southampton

Current position: 20th

  • 8 May: Nottingham Forest (a)
  • 13 May: Fulham (h)
  • 21 May: Brighton (a)
  • 28 May: Liverpool (h)

We’re into great-escape territory now for Southampton, who are six points adrift of safety. The writing would appear to be on the wall, and defeat at Forest would all-but relegate them. With seven points the minimum requirement, realistically, the Saints are doomed.
